STAFF WRITER
Nobel Prize-winner Torsten N. Wiesel M.D., spoke at last week's Common Hour his many contributions to the field of neuroscience of vision. He spoke about everything from his research experience on information processing in the visual region of the brain to his opinions on education and philosophy.
(Henry Coppola, Bowdoin Orient Dr. Wiesel began his medical career by receiving his M.D. degree in 1954 from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and his interests in psychiatry led him to work in mental hospitals. He spoke briefly about his work with schizophrenic patients as a young doctor at a hospital in Stockholm and how studying mental patients' neurological problems is essential to understanding pathways of the brain. After completing his medical studies, Wiesel stayed at the University where he taught psychology for a year.
Wiesel was then invited to the United States in 1955 to study with neurophysiologist Stephen Kuffler at Johns Hopkins University. Joined by Dr. David Hubel, Wiesel set out to explore the receptive field properties of cells in central visual pathways.

54. The Heidelberg Appeal
of Boston LiteratureUSA; * torsten N. wiesel, nobel Prize (Medicine), Professor,Lab of Neurobiology, Rockefeller University of New York, Neurobiology-USA;
http://www.sepp.org/heidelberg_appeal.html
The Heidelberg Appeal
Background The Heidelberg Appeal was publicly released at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. By the end of the 1992 summit, 425 scientists
and other intellectual leaders had signed the appeal. Since then, word of mouth has prompted hundreds more scientists to lend their
support. Today, more than 4,000 signatories, including 72 Nobel Prize winners, from 106 countries have signed it. In spite of this
spontaneous and growing support from the world's scientific community, the Heidelberg Appeal has received little media attention. Neither a statement of corporate interests nor a denial of environmental problems, the Heidelberg Appeal is a quiet call for reason and a
recognition of scientific progress as the solution to, not the cause of, the health and environmental problems that we face. The Appeal
expresses a conviction that modern society is the best equipped in human history to solve the world's ills, provided that they do not
sacrifice science, intellectual honesty, and common sense to political opportunism and irrational fears.

WORLD SCIENTISTS' CALL FOR ACTION
AT THE KYOTO CLIMATE SUMMIT
Five years ago, in the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity , 1600 of the world's senior scientists sounded an unprecedented warning: Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms. Addressed to political, industrial, religious, and scientific leaders, the Warning demonstrated that the scientific community had reached a consensus that grave threats imperil the future of humanity and the global environment. However, over four years have passed, and progress has been woefully inadequate. Some of the most serious problems have worsened. Invaluable time has been squandered because so few leaders have risen to the challenge. The December 1997 Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, presents a unique opportunity. The world's political leaders can demonstrate a new commitment to the protection of the environment. The goal is to strengthen the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change by agreeing to effective controls on human practices affecting climate. This they can and must do, primarily by augmenting the Convention's voluntary measures with legally binding commitments to reduce industrial nations' emissions of heat-trapping gases significantly below 1990 levels in accordance with a near-term timetable.
