Home History of DNA Timeline Featured Scientists ... History of DNA Maurice Wilkins Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins CBE FRS FKC was born to British parents in New Zealand on 15 December 1916 and spent the first six years of his life there. He attended King Edward’s School Birmingham, read Natural Sciences at St John’s College Cambridge and did postgraduate work on the luminescence of solids with John Randall at the University of Birmingham.
During the War he worked with Sir Mark Oliphant in California on the Manhattan atom bomb project. He then joined Randall’s team at St Andrew’s and moved to King’s in 1946 when Randall became Head of Physics and established the Medical Research Council Biophysics Unit there.
Using spectroscopy to study DNA, Wilkins developed new types of microscopes and cameras and with Ray Gosling achieved new images of the A form of the molecule. In 1951, Rosalind Franklin was recruited to do X-ray spectroscopy in Randall’s team and she also obtained patterns of the B form which had higher humidity and revealed a strong cruciform pattern. One of these was shown to Jim Watson of the University of Cambridge by Wilkins early in 1953 and provided crucial dimensions for the model which Watson and Crick then began to build.
When Wilkins saw this in Cambridge in March 1953, he recognised the model was fundamentally in accord with his and Franklin’s work, although with important additions. Watson and Crick’s letter to Nature, in April 1953, acknowledged that they ‘had been stimulated by a knowledge of the general nature of the unpublished experiments and ideas’ of Wilkins and Franklin and their co-workers.

Our people paper consists of the two men, which discovered the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule in 1951, describing the structure as a double helix. These scientists are known as Dr. Francis Harry Compton Crick and Dr. James Dewey Watson. Francis Harry Compton Crick was born on June 8, 1916 in Northampton, England. He is the elder son of Harry Crick and Annie Elizabeth Wilkins. His brother A.F. Crick is a doctor in New Zealand. At the age of 24, Francis Harry Compton Crick married Ruth Doreen Dodd. They had a son Michael F.C. Crick who is also a scientist. The marriage however only lasted seven years, from 1940-1947. Two years later in 1949, Francis Crick married Odile Speed. They are currently and have two daughters, Gabrielle and Jacqueline Crick and reside in a home named "The Golden Helix." Francis Crick's education began at Northampton Grammar School and Mill Hill School in London. He studied physics at University College in London and received a B.Sc. in 1937. He tried to pursue a Ph.D. but was prevented because of the-war in 1939. Then finally in 1954, he received his Ph.D. at Caius College in Cambridge and worked on a thesis called "X-ray diffraction: polypeptides and proteins." In 1951, Francis Crick met James Dewey Watson, who was 23 years of age. This is when worked together on the DNA molecule's structure discovering it as the double helix.
