    The first 150 years by Prof. Bill Griffith August von Hofmann The Prince Consort was an enthusiastic supporter and, through his contacts in Germany, persuaded August von Hofmann Sir Edward Frankland Sir Edward Frankland , was a pioneer of organometalic chemistry of theories of chemical bonding. Sir Patrick Linstead Two famous early RCC students were William Perkin. discoverer of the aniline dye mauveine and founder of the British dyestuffs industry, and the great polymath William Crookes who discovered the element thallium and did much fundamental work in physics and radiochemistry. More recent figures include Sir Patrick Linstead , discoverer of the important phthalocyanine dyes and Richard Barrer , developer of zeolites which have become of tremendous importance in the petroleum industry. Two chemists received Nobel Prizes: Sir Derek Barton for his research on organic conformational analysis and Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson for his organometalic work. Sir Derek died in 1998. Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson died in 1997.

Condensed by Arno Heyn. For the original article, see the website http://www.matthey.com Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson was born in Todmorden, Yorkshire. He was one of the greatest international inorganic chemists, making noted contributions in transition metal chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, organometallic chemistry, and coordination chemistry. In 1973, when he shared the Nobel Prize with E.O. Fischer, the award was made for the discovery of ferrocene and similar "sandwich compounds", work he did jointly with R.B. Woodward, while Wilkinson was an Assistant Professor at Harvard from 1951 until 1955. At Imperial College he studied both chemistry and geology. In 1941 he graduated with a B.Sc. degree, first class honors, and continued his studies toward a Ph.D. under H.V.A. Briscoe, the only Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in Britain. His thesis was on: "Some Physicochemical Observations on Hydrolyis in the Homogeneous Vapour Phase", a title to disguise the fact that the compound studied was phosgene.

    [1921-1996] Born in Todmorden . He was educated at Todmorden Grammar school, and in 1939 he gained a Royal Scholarship to Imperial College London where he gained his BSc and PhD. On his graduation in 1941, the wartime Joint Recruiting Board said that he should stay in research. In January 1943, with other chemists, physicists and mathematicians, he sailed from Greenock for his first crossing of the Atlantic, and worked as a scientific officer in the joint UK/US/Canadian atomic energy project at Montreal and at Chalk River until 1946. He joined a research group at the University of California at Berkeley, becoming the first non-American cleared by the US Atomic Energy Commission for work in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. He worked at Imperial College London, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was professor of chemistry at Harvard. In January 1956, he returned to Imperial College London, as one of its youngest-ever professors, to take up what had just been established as the first chair of inorganic chemistry in Britain, the Sir Edward Frankland Professor of Inorganic Chemistry . He held the post from 1956 to 1988. In 1962, with F.A. Cotton, one of his former American students, he published the first edition of

    Wilkinson received his Ph.D. from the Imperial College (England) in 1946. He was working in the USA on nuclear chemistry (1946-1950). Whilst at the Harvard University he grew interested in ferrocene. Wilkinson returned to England in 1956 and while at the Imperial College he made remarkable contributions to organometallic chemistry. His work led to the development of versatile homogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation of many olefins. In 1973 Wilkinson shared the Nobel Prize with E. O. Fischer Links

In the Spring of 1952 a 21-year-old student from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (A.B., Temple University, 1951) enrolled in a first-year graduate course in inorganic chemistry at Harvard University. The young (30-year-old) British assistant professor found it difficult, if not impossible, to find a satisfactory textbook for his course. Among recently published books Nevil Vincent Sidgwick's massive, two-volume The Chemical Elements and Their Compounds (Oxford University Press: Oxford, 1950; 1628 pp), although a gold mine of information, was hardly appealing as a text. The only available option was Harry Julius Emeléus and J. S. Anderson's Modern Aspects of Inorganic Chemistry (Van Nostrand: Princeton, NJ, 1938 and 1952), which was not really a text but rather a collection of reviews of interesting new areas. Cotton is probably best known among chemists for his discoveries of multiple bonds between metal atoms, and he originated the idea of "cluster chemistry" in transition metals. He was one of the first chemists to apply the mathematical concepts of group theory to the study of complex bonds. Theories developed in his research over more than 30 years have grown into processes that produce high-octane gasoline, platinum-palladium catalytic converters, ethyl alcohol coolants, synthetic motor oils and rubber tires, paint brighteners and high-strength structural plastics. He has published more than 1,300 articles in refereed journals and for more than 20 years has been among the most-cited researchers in chemistry. Cotton is the only American chemist to win all seven ACS gold medals. The seventh ACS award, the F.A. Cotton Award and Lectureship for Excellence in Chemical Research, is named in his honor, and he was the first recipient, in 1995. He received the 1994 Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry, which he shared with University of Chicago chemist Jack Halpern. He also received the 1990 King Faisal Medal from the government of Saudi Arabia. He received the National Medal of Science in 1982.
