Before joining the faculty of Princeton University as a professor of jurisprudence and political economy, Wilson taught for three years at Bryn Mawr College and for two years at Wesleyan College . He was enormously successful as a lecturer and productive as a scholar.
As president of Princeton University from 1902 to 1910, Wilson became widely known for his ideas on reforming education. In pursuit of his idealized intellectual life for democratically chosen students, he wanted to change the admission system, the pedagogical system, the social system, even the architectural layout of the campus. But Wilson was a thinker who needed to act. So he entered politics and as governor of the State of New Jersey from 1911 to 1913 distinguished himself once again as a reformer.

On March 3, 1921, Woodrow Wilson relinquished the White House to conservative Warren Harding . Wilson accompanied the president-elect to the Capitol. Then, as the sounds of "Hail to the Chief" drifted faintly from the inaugural ceremony, he entered his Pierce Arrow automobile and drove down Pennsylvania Avenue towards his new, and last home. As he passed the White House, he looked away.
Woodrow Wilson would live for three years in a house on S Street. A steady trickle of well-wishers came through, but Woodrow Wilson remained a haunted man, wavering between bitterness and stoical resignation to fate.
Before leaving office, he had won the Nobel Peace prize. But having failed to achieve his dream of bringing the League of Nations into existence with America at its head, Nobel recognition gave Wilson little solace.
Whether he realized it or not, Woodrow Wilson left behind a profound legacy, one which still generates lively debate to this day.
Ira Katznelson, Historian
Wilson matters as the first modern president. Wilson matters as the person who led the United States into global geopolitics. Wilson matters as someone who followed a progressive political agenda and who established a model for subsequent possibilities, some of which had to wait a long time to come back.
David Levering Lewis, Historian

Thomas Woodrow Wilson Was Born
December 28, 1856

For his efforts, Wilson was awarded the 1919 Nobel Peace Prize, but the award was bittersweet. Congress opposed U.S. entry into the League. The strain of his campaigning and the disappointment of Congress's resolution weakened him. He returned to Washington in a state of collapse and shortly suffered a thrombosis (a blood clot in a blood vessel) that impaired control over the left side of his body. Wilson and his second wife, Edith Bolling Galt Wilsonwho continued work in the White House when Wilson was illretired in Washington, D.C., in 1921. Wilson died three years later, and he is memorialized in many ways, including this 1918 footage of the president in a New York parade encouraging Americans to participate in Liberty Loans to support the war effort. Thomas Woodrow Wilson By Cecil Ramnaraine Woodrow Wilson, the thirty-first President of the United States, was born on December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia. His father, Reverend Joseph Ruggles Wilson, was a Presbyterian minister and his mother, Janet (Jessie) Wilson, was the daughter of a minister. Wilson’s family was a religious people who filled his early years with literature, knowledge, righteousness, morality, and ideals of fair play and justice for all. Woodrow deeply loved his father and was greatly influenced by him. When his father was old and feeble and could not take care of himself, Woodrow Wilson brought the Reverend J. Wilson to live with him and took care of the reverend gentleman until his death. His goodness and gentleness came from his mother whom he worshipped for her purity, nobility and gentility. Young Wilson attended Davidson College in North Carolina when he was sixteen, then transferred to Princeton University from which he graduated in 1879~ He studied law at the University of Virginia and was admitted to the bar in Atlanta, Georgia, where he practiced law briefly in 1852. He moved on to John Hopkins University for graduate studies and completed his Ph.D. there in 1886. Wilson was a prolific writer. He published a biography of George

, twenty-eighth president of the United States . Born in Staunton, Virginia, Wilson earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and developed strong leadership abilities as a college teacher and as president of Princeton University. He published many books on government and political science. In 1910 Wilson was elected governor of New Jersey, and two years later he gained the Democratic nomination for president. A split in the Republican party between William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt allowed Wilson to win the election of 1912 with a minority of votes. Wilson won reelection in a close race with Republican Charles Evans Hughes in 1916. During the Wilson administration Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act and the Clayton Anti-Trust Act . It broadened the Constitution by passing the Seventeenth Amendment allowing the direct election of senators, the Eighteenth Amendment establishing Prohibition , and the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the right to vote. With their armies reeling under the weight of a combined Allied and American assault, the Germans appealed to Wilson in October 1918 for an armistice. Wilson led the U.S. delegation and became the leading advocate of the League of Nations at the Paris Peace Conference, which opened in January 1919. On June 28, 1919, the Versailles Treaty with Germany was signed. While vainly seeking American public support for the Treaty (September-October 1919), Wilson suffered a nervous collapse and stroke of paralysis. Wilson's physical condition in 1920 prevented him from taking an active role in the presidential campaign proved an overwhelming victory for the Republicans. The bitterness of Wilson's disappointment over the election was alleviated by the 1919 Nobel Prize for Peace awarded him in December 1920.
