HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Wilson, (Thomas) Woodrow 28th president of the USA 191321, a Democrat. He kept the USA out of World War I until 1917, and in January 1918 issued his Fourteen Points as a basis for a just peace settlement. At the peace conference in Paris he secured the inclusion of the League of Nations in individual peace treaties, but these were not ratified by Congress, so the USA did not join the League. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1919 for his work as a founder of the League of Nations.

"Woodrow Wilson stopped using his first name, Thomas, while he was still a boy. Wilson did not learn to read until he was 9 years old. Starting 'late' did not hinder his scholastic career at all. He became a college professor, an author, and president of Princeton University. He was a very good public speaker. Wilson received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in trying to heal the wounds to peace caused by World War One. He did not want the USA to fight in World War One, but was given little choice as German submarines kept sinking American ships.

A college professor and writer,Wilson was President of Princeton University and governor of New Jersey before serving his two Presidential terms. His peace program, called the Fourteen Points, outlined freedom , self-determination, and foreign policy. "I use not only all the brains I have,"he explained. "But all I can borrow." Friday, October 11, 2002 [link] The first thing I saw when I woke up this morning, from the BBC News: Former US President Jimmy Carter wins the Nobel Peace Prize for "decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." The Nobel site has a long history on the Nobel Peace Prize , including this bit on the first award to a US president: "[Roosevelt] received the prize for his successful mediation to end the Russo-Japanese war and for his interest in arbitration, having provided the Hague arbitration court with its very first case. Internationally, however, he was best known for a rather bellicose posture, which certainly included the use of force. It is known that both the secretary and the relevant adviser of the Nobel Committee at that time were highly critical of an award to Roosevelt." And the second, to Woodrow Wilson:

World War I: The War Effort. top Wilson mounted the most efficient and corruption-free American war effort up to that time. A draft was instituted and functioned smoothly, inducting nearly 3 million of the 5 million men who served in the armed forces. Large numbers of American troops commanded by Gen. John J. Pershing went into combat in France during the summer of 1918, in time to join the counteroffensive that finished the war that fall. On the home front, new forms of government-directed economic organization were introduced under the War Industries Board, headed by Bernard Baruch, while several million dollars were raised through Liberty loan bond drives. The Committee on Public Information used advertising and public relations techniques to arouse popular fervor for the war effort, but espionage and sedition laws also led to widespread curtailment of civil liberties, including the imprisonment of the Socialist party leader and war critic Eugene V. Debs.
