HKUST Establishes S S Chern Lecture to Enhance Knowledge
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established the Shiing-Shen Chern Lecture, with Professor Chen-Ning Yang, 1957 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to deliver the inaugural lecture on Saturday, 9 November 2002.
Prof Shiing-Shen Chern Prof Chern, currently visiting HKUST, has been hailed as one of the greatest geometers of the 20th century. In 1944, he stunned the mathematical world with the development of the Chern characteristic classes in fibre spaces, which have made an important impact on all areas of mathematics.
His success has inspired many students to follow his example, including Nobel Laureate Prof Chen-Ning Yang, and Prof Shing-Tung Yau, the first Chinese to receive the prestigious Fields Medal in 1982.
"We hope to attract renowned scientists from around the world to visit HKUST every year and give lectures on the latest developments at the frontiers of research," says Prof Shiu Yuen Cheng, Associate Dean of Science and Head of the Department of Mathematics. Prof Cheng studied under Prof Chern when he was a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley.
The 91-year-old Chern was born in Jia Xing, Zhejiang, China in 1911. He graduated from Nankai University, Tianjin, in 1930, and received a master's degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1934. In 1935, he made the unusual choice to study in Germany, under Wilhelm Blaschke at Hamburg University, and completed his PhD dissertation in less than a year. He went to Princeton University, US, from 1943 to 1945, where he developed the famous Chern characteristic classes, opening up a new era for differential geometry.

Nobel Laureate, Eminent Scholars and Market Reformer Awarded Honorary Doctorates
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will confer honorary doctorates on four distinguished persons for their outstanding contributions to research, education, and public service. They are Prof Chen-Ning Yang, 1957 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Mrs Laura May Lung Cha, Vice-Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, Prof Anne O Krueger, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Prof Henry T Y Yang, Chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB).
Prof Chen-Ning Yang Hailed as one of the most important theoretical physicists in the second half of the 20th century, Prof Chen-Ning Yang's impact on the world of physics and beyond, particularly in Chinese communities both within and outside the Chinese Mainland, is immense and far-reaching. He will be conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
In 1957 Prof Yang and Prof Tsung-Dao Lee became the first Chinese scientists to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their groundbreaking work on the non-conservation of parity in weak interactions has become a landmark discovery in modern physics, pushing human understanding on the structure of matter at the smallest scales to a new frontier. In addition to elementary particle physics, Prof Yang's contributions to statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics are also profound and long lasting.

SCIENCE Introduction Dr. Chen Ning Yang Dr. Tsung Dao Lee Dr. Steven Chu ... Samuel C.C. Ting INTRODUCTION All the way to the earlier time of this century, the most important and successful thing the Chinese have contributed to the U.S. society was the railroad. Now, in 1998, we can tell you that Chinese have done a lot besides the railroad building. One of the things we are so proud of is a number of famous scientists have discovered a lot to help our society. All these successful Chinese American scientists share one common point. It is that they are all proud to be Chinese and they have tried their best to contribute something to their second mother, that is America. Their inventions shocked the whole world. Let's hear some of their stories. Dr. Chen Ning Yang : Chen Ning Yang, Nobel Prize recipient and Director of the Theoretical Physics Department at State University of New York at Stony Book, is the 1992 Roy E. Moon Distinguished Lecturer in Science at Angelo State University. He is among the word's foremost theoretical physicists and mathematicians and is known for his work on elementary particles.
