Jan. 28, 1939, was perhaps the greatest English-language poet of the 20th century. The major defining elements of Yeats's poetic career were visible by his 24th year. He had formed a profound attachment to the county of Sligo, where he stayed for long periods while living in London (1867-83); his interest in the occult led him to found (1885) the Dublin Hermetic Society and to join (1887) the London Lodge of Theosophists; his 1885 meeting with the nationalist John O'Leary prompted his discovery of Ireland as a literary subject and his commitment to the cause of Irish national identity; in 1889 he fell in love with Maud Gonne and published The Wanderings of Oisin. Yeats's lifework was an attempt to "hammer into unity" these evolving areas of his experience. Between 1889 and 1902, Yeats sustained these original commitments. Irish myth and landscapes fill the poems of The Rose (1893). His edition of Blake (1893; with Edwin Ellis) influenced his own thought. He enshrined his unrequited love for Maud Gonne in the stylized, erotic, symbolic verses of The Wind among the Reeds (1899). Go Back Main Page William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 1865. He was the son of the painter John Butler Yeats. He spent most of his childhood in County Sligo, London, and Ireland. Because of his love for Ireland, most of his poems dominate its country and culture. As a boy, he attended Godolphin School, in London. At the age of 15, Yeats returned to Dublin and attended the Erasmus Smith School. At first he was studying painting, but somehow he discovered poetry. Some of his first published works was Mosada, The Wanderings of Oisin (1889), The Wind Among the Reeds (1899), and Fairy and Folk Tales of Irish Peasantry. In 1896, Yeats finds himself in the middle of the Irish Revolution. Yeats became involved with the Celtic Revival, a movement against the cultural influences of English rule in Ireland. At the same time, he falls in love with Maud Gonne, but then she married someone else. He then married Lady Gregory, who becomes an important figure in his poems. Together, they found the Irish National Theater. His written works grew fame all over the world. Yeats had a life-long interest in mysticism. His poetry became more based in reality, less ambiguous and more direct. He had beliefs in idiosyncratic philosophy, and his poetry continued to grow stronger as he grew older. His poetry delivered a message of broad and diverse as the man himself. He constantly strives to explain and make analogous to the folklore of his native land. His poetry serves as a record of his own personal struggle. Yeats became deeply involved with politics. He was elected a senator of the Irish Free Republic in 1922 till 1928.
