WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS and the UNC COLLECTION William Butler Yeats was born in a suburb of Dublin in 1865, the first child in a family that would make remarkable contributions to Irish literature, art, and culture over the next seventy-five years. Yeats's father (John Butler Yeats) and his brother (Jack Butler Yeats) became artists of very considerable distinction; his sisters (Elizabeth and Susan) made significant contributions through their participation in the Dun Emer/Cuala Press; and Yeats himself, of course, became Ireland's most important poet and the leader of the Irish literary revival of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Following a childhood divided between homes in London and Ireland and a brief attempt to become an artist like his father, the young William Butler Yeats settled determinedly into the career of a poet. His first poems appeared in the Dublin University Review in 1885, and he spent the next fifteen years in London, Dublin, and the west of Ireland (his beloved Sligo) developing his poetic skills and vision. Under the influence of Irish patriots like John O'Leary and friends such as Katherine Tynan and George Russell (known as AE), he explored Irish folklore, mythology and history, nurturing an inclination towards an Irish nationalism, perhaps more literary and cultural than political, that would color much of his later work. In the late 1880s he discovered Theosophy and developed a deep and life-long interest in magic, mysticism, and the occult. During this same period he met and fell in love with Maud Gonne, a beautiful and passionately nationalistic young Irish woman. His long and unrequited love for Gonne would find expression in many of his most striking poems over the following decades.

EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS Interviews with maverick directors ALISTAIR COOKE Listen to the veteran America expert William Butler Yeats 1865 - 1939 Back to audio clips William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin of Protestant parents. He was educated in Dublin and London, but spent much of his boyhood with his maternal grandparents in Sligo, where the local scenery, legends and folklore had a lasting influence on his life and work. Separated by his background from the Roman Catholic majority and rejecting the materialist values of the dominant Protestant minority, Yeats turned from the beginning to pagan Ireland for his inspiration. He was also interested in esoteric mysticism, founding a society in Dublin to study Hinduism and Asian religions. Back in London in 1887, he studied the prophetic books of William Blake, drawing an early connection between poetry and the occult. A close interest in the magical and apocalyptic remained central to him throughout his life. Yeats's earlier poems, such as The Wanderings of Oisin (1889) and The Rose (1893), celebrate the Irish landscape of his boyhood and explore pagan Irish themes.

William Butler Yeats
Irish poet, dramatist, and prose writer, 1923 Nobel Prize for Literature, 1865-1939
An aged man is but a paltry thing, a tattered coat upon a stick. I hate journalists. There is nothing in them but tittering jeering emptiness. They have all made what Dante calls the Great Refusal. . . . The shallowest people on the ridge of the earth. I balanced all, brought all to mind, the years to come seemed waste of breath, a waste of breath the years behind, in balance with this life, this death. I at midnight by the clock may creep into your bed. I am of a healthy long lived race, and our minds improve with age. How far away the stars seem, and how far is our first kiss, and ah, how old my heart. Come Fairies, take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame! Come away, O human child: To the waters and the wild with a fairy, hand in hand, For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand. TOIL and grow rich, what's that but to lie with a foul witch and after, drained dry, to be brought to the chamber where lies one long sought with despair.

Biographical Sketch
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was born in Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of four children born to Susan Pollexfen and John Butler Yeats. While the family lived primarily in Dublin and London, time spent with relatives in County Sligo influenced Yeats' dreams and aspirations. In Sligo he learned the folk lore, myths, and legends which provided the structure and background for so much of his poetry. An uninspired student, Yeats spent five years at the Godolphin Day School while his father studied painting in London. Upon the family's return to Ireland in 1880 he attended Erasmus High School before being sent to the Metropolitan Art School. His artistic talent proved to be as indifferent as his scholarship, but he came away from the experience with a lifelong friend in his fellow student George William Russell. Russell may have provided impetus to what became Yeats' lifelong interest in mysticism and the occult. Yeats' first published poems appeared in The Dublin University Review in 1885. By 1889 Yeats was able to publish an entire volume of poems
