Pieter Zeeman Kamerling Onnes (Nobel Prize in Physics for 1913) , who was twelve years his senior. Zeeman's wide reading, which included a proper mastery of works such as Maxwell's Heat, and his passion for performing experiments amazed Kamerlingh Onnes in no small degree, and formed the basis for a fruitful friendship between the two scientists.
Zeeman entered Leaden University in 1885 and became mainly a pupil of Kamerlingh Onnes (mechanics) and Lorentz (experimental physics): the latter was later to share the Nobel Prize with him. An early reward came in 1890 when he was appointed assistant to Lorentz, enabling him to participate in an extensive research programme which included the study of the Kerr effect-an important foundation for his future great work. He obtained his doctor's degree in 1893, after which he left for F. Kohlrausch's institute at Strasbourg, where for one semester he carried out work under E. Cohn. He returned to Leyden in 1894 and became "privaat-docent" (extra-mural lecturer) from 1895 to 1897.
In 1897, the year following his great discovery of the magnetic splitting of spectral lines, he was called to a lectureship at

Pieter Zeeman
Born: May 25 1865 in Zonnemaire, Netherlands
Died: Oct 9 1943 in Amsterdam, Netherlands Pieter Zeeman, a Dutch physicist, was born on May 25, 1865, in Zonnemaire, the Netherlands. His father was a Lutheran minister named Catharinus Farandinus Zeeman and his mothers name was Wilhelmina Worst. It was his mother who attended to his elementary education. He attended secondary school in Zierikzee, a town a few miles from his home. He had a strong desire to attend University, for which he had to study the classical languages. And after a couple of years he finally entered the University of Leyden in 1885, studying under Lorentz. In 1890, he became a lecturer at Leyden and in 1900, was appointed professor at Amsterdam and director of their physical institute. In 1896, while at Leyden, he discovered what is now called the Zeeman Effect, the splitting of spectral lines by a magnetic field. It is by way of the Zeeman Effect that astronomers cam measure the strength of the magnetic field on the surface of the sun, or other stars. Scientists were not able to fully understand the Effect until the development of quantum mechanics in the 1920s. In 1902, Zeeman and Lorentz were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, for their, extraordinary service they rendered by their researches into the influence of magnetism upon radiation phenomenon.

Pieter Zeeman
Born: 25 May 1865 in Zonnemaire, Netherlands
Died: 9 Oct 1943 in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Pieter Zeeman was born in the little village of Zonnemaire in the Netherlands, on the twenty-fifth day of May, 1865. His father, Catharinus Farandinus Zeeman, a Lutheran minister, and his mother, Wilhelmina Worst, attended to his elemantary educatio n in the village, as was the custom. Afterwards, Pieter was sent five miles away and attended the secondary school at Zierikzee. Being a bright young lad, he wished to attend the university, but he needed to study classical languages (eeew) to meet the a dmission requirements, so for two years he studied at the gymnasium at Delft the esoteric art of classical languages, which was a positive foreshadowing of Pieter's dedication and perserverance in later years. In 1885, Pieter's perservance paid off and he entered the University of Leiden (Leyden), where he spent over a decade. (Dictionary of Scientific Biography) Pieter started his journey into scientific inquiry early. By the time he arrived at Delft, he had a solid understanding of Maxwell's investigations of heat and he also had published an acoount of the aurora Borealis from the little village of Zon nemarie. At the University of Leiden, Peiter worked with Onnes and Lorentz, and in 1890, became Lorentz's able bodied assistant. In 1892, the Netherlands Scientific Society of Haarlem awarded Pieter its gold medal and in 1893, he was awarded the doctora te for his precise observations of the Kerr Effect. In 1897 he was appointed as a lecturer and then was promoted to a full fledged professorship at the University of Amsterdam where he stayed until his retirement in 1935. (D of SB)

Zeeman, Pieter
(b. May 25, 1865, Zonnemaire, Neth.d. Oct. 9, 1943, Amsterdam), Dutch physicist, joint winner, with Hendrik A. Lorentz, also of The Netherlands, of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1902 for his discovery of the Zeeman effect q.v. Zeeman, who had been a student of Lorentz at the University of Leiden, began lecturing at Leiden in 1890. Six years later, at the suggestion of Lorentz, he investigated the effect of magnetic fields on a source of light and found that each of the lines in the spectrum of emitted light split into several lines; this became known as the Zeeman effect. Zeeman was appointed professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam in 1900 and director of its Physical Institute in 1908. Remaining there until his death, he conducted research on the propagation of light in moving media, such as water, quartz, and flint. ZEEMAN, Pieter (1865-1943)
Zeeman, Pieter , natuurkundige (Zonnemaire (gem. Brouwershaven) 25-5- 1865 - Amsterdam 9-10- 1943 ).
