The History of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung The research report includes a historical overview which supplements the chronological data given below. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft, representatives of the Rhenish-Westphalian Industries and the town of Mülheim an der Ruhr decide to create the Kaiser-Wilhelm- Institut für Kohlenforschung. Franz Fischer (Technical Universität Berlin) is appointed as the first Director of the Institute. Opening and inauguration of the Institute. The first volume of the "Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur Kenntnis der Kohle" is published. Franz Fischer und Hans Tropsch file a patent for the synthesis of petroleum at normal pressure ("Verfahren zur Gewinnung mehrgliedriger Paraffinkohlenwasserstoffe aus Kohlenoxyden und Wasserstoff auf katalytischem Wege", DRP 484337). Gründung der Studien- und Verwertungsgesellschaft mbH. Construction of a pilot plant to scale up the Fischer-Tropsch-Synthesis. The Institute becomes an independent Foundation. Karl Ziegler (University of Halle) succeeds Franz Fischer as Director.

Vznik webu

50. Akzo Nobel High Purity Metalorganics - Products
Commercial production for these products flows from aluminum alkyl manufacturingtechnology, invented by nobel laureate karl ziegler.
http://www.anhpmo.com/products.htm
High Purity Metalorganics from Akzo Nobel include certified high-purity volatile organometallic compounds of aluminum antimony gallium indium ... magnesium , and zinc for CVD, CBE and OMVPE of compound semiconductors, and for similar vapor deposition applications. These are very reactive , ultra-high purity materials. Special packaging in application-specific cylinders preserves product integrity and simplifies safe handing. Commercial production for these products flows from aluminum alkyl manufacturing technology, invented by Nobel laureate Karl Ziegler . The Akzo Nobel site in Deer Park, Texas pioneered this technology in 1959. Today, Akzo Nobel continues to lead the way in:
  • Production capability Safety knowledge Product knowledge Technical support
As the only producer vertically integrated for electronic-grade metalorganics, Akzo Nobel has the products you need when you need them, with the reliability you expect.

Ziegler, Karl
Ziegler, Karl (1898-1973), German chemist and Nobel laureate, born near Kassel. He was educated at the University of Marburg. Ziegler had converted ethene (or ethylene) to polyethene (polyethylene) by a low-pressure process. Natta's improved process allowed him to produce "isotactic" (a term coined by his wife) polypropene (polypropylene), in which the side-chain methyl groups are ordered in one direction along the polymer chain. Such polymers have become commercially very important because of their high melting point and great strength. In 1963 he shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Ziegler. Back

Walther Nernst (1864-1941) won the Nobel prize in chemistry in recognition of his work in thermochemistry. His work at low temperatures resulted in his heat theorem - the Third Law of Thermodynamics. As entropy changes approach zero near absolute zero, it becomes impossible to reach this temperature, even by an infinite number of steps. Nernst also developed an electric lamp based on rare earth and magnesium filaments that did not need a vacuum to sustain its glow. This bulb is shown next to his portrait on the stamp. Fritz Haber (1868-1934) found a solution to the problem of dwindling nitrate deposits in Chile, which were used in the manufacture of fertilizers. He received the 1918 Nobel prize in chemistry "for the synthesis of ammonia from its elements" by subjecting hydrogen and nitrogen to high pressure in the presence of a catalyst. On the industrial scale this resulted in the Haber-Bosch process. This Swiss stamp and a similar one honoring Alfred Nobel himself were a joint issue of Sweden and Switzerland in 1997. Swiss chemist Paul Karrer's (1889-1971) research was in the chemistry of natural products, particularly carotinoids and flavins. He isolated vitamin A and determined its structure, the first vitamin so identified. Likewise, he identified vitamin B2 and was able to synthesize it. He shared the 1937 Nobel prize for chemistry with W. N. Haworth of England (see above, Royal Society of Chemistry).
