8 October 2001 The 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded this morning to Lee Hartwell of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and to Tim Hunt and Paul M. Nurse of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London, all for their work on the discovery ofand interactions betweenCDCs, cyclins and cyclin dependent kinases, key regulators of the cell cycle. This work is fundamental to understanding processes of cell growth, division, and regulation, with implications for cancer and its control. Leland H. Hartwell is President and Director of the Fred Hutchinson CRC . Much of his work was carried out at the University of Washington , also in Seattle, where he is Professor of Genetics and Adjunct Professor of Medicine. He is a member of the National Acadmey of Sciences and a prior award winner of Brandeis' Rosenstiel Award, MSKCC's Katherine Berkan Judd Award, Columbia's Louisa Gross Horwitz Award, and the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award. Physiology Biophysics and Molecular Medicine Seminars for Winter and Spring 2002
The Mission of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics
Physiology, the oldest and most fundamental of the basic medical sciences, is the science of the function of living organisms, including humans. In the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, our techniques are modern and are constantly evolving, our questions are immediate, but our basic quest remains constant. As Physiologists we ask how biological processesfrom molecules to organismsperform their functions. As Biophysicists we ask how these processesand life itselfbuild upon the laws of mathematics, physics, and chemistry.

Wittcoff Chair and Department Head For years, Washington University School of Medicine has been a world leader in biochemical research and the training of young scientists. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, originally called the Department of Biological Chemistry, is dedicated to the investigation of the complex relationships between macromolecules. Studies of protein-protein interactions, protein-nucleic (either DNA or RNA) acid interactions and protein-ligand interactions that control biological processes such as transcription, signal processing, protein structural changes, protein folding as well as other cellular functions represent current areas of interest. The strong focus of the department is on understanding these processes in a quantitative way based on understanding of the structural and dynamic aspects of macromolecules. The significance of delineating the quantitative structural basis of molecular and cellular events lies in the potential for making predictions that allow advances in medicine and improvements in the quality of life. The department is a part of the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences that consists of various programs including the Programs in Molecular Biophysics Biochemistry and Bioorganic Chemistry . These programs involve 95 faculty and 40 graduate students (both Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D.) and are designed to prepare students for scientific careers as independent investigators. Applications to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics or to the programs in Biochemistry or Biophysics can be requested from the

n the News S ummerSchool 2003 ... NIH Resource for Macromolecular Modeling and Bioinformatics Highlight Infections are battled best by the human immune system when there exists a memory from a previous disease or vaccination. The first step in using this line of defense is recognition: Cells of the immune system capture antigens, e.g., microbes in the respiratory tract, then mature in the lymph system, and finally present on their surface pieces of the antigen to T-cells that may recognize the antigen and become activated. The recognition of the antigen by T-cells is dramatically enhanced through surface receptors, CD2 and CD58, on the T-cell and the antigen presenting cell. The receptors stick out from their cell, adhere to one another, and conjoin the T-cell and antigen presenting cell long enough to enable recognition and activation. The molecular basis of this adhesion has been probed in a recent collaborative study with UIUC chemical engineer D. Leckband . Starting from the available crystallographic structure of the CD2-CD58 complex the researchers carried out 90,000 and 100,000 atom simulations using NAMD and pulled the complex apart in steered molecular dynamics simulations. An analysis of the simulations with

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT A message from the Director of CB
Welcome to the IBS web site! The Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology is a vibrant and diverse enterprise, and this is reflected in the many interests of our student body. The members of the Illinois Biophysics Society are working hard behind the scenes to provide us with symposia and social gatherings, to help with student recruiting, and to keep us informed with their newsletter. These are important activities, reminding us that we are a large family with common goals as well as far-ranging interests.
I encourage all interested students to join in and help IBS’s efforts.
