The University at Stony Brook Biophysics Faculty is an interdisciplinary group of scientists from the university departments of Anesthesiology Biochemistry and Cell Biology Chemistry Medicine ... Neurobiology and Behavior , Neurological Surgery, Orthopaedics Pharmacological Sciences Physics and Astronomy and Physiology and Biophysics . Several staff scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are also members of the Biophysics Faculty. The basis of the teaching program is the faculty's interest in understanding the molecular structure and function of biological molecules. Research in Biophysics at Stony Brook places particular emphasis on structural biophysics and membrane biophysics. In structural biophysics, we seek to relate the molecular structure of biomolecules (especially proteins) to the function of the molecule. In membrane biophysics, we study the lipids and proteins of cell membranes using electrical and chemical techniques. Although the major focus is basic science research, several projects relate to clinical science, with faculty investigating such diseases as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease and Lyme disease. Also, some of our faculty members are developing new tools for use in medical diagnosis.

If you look closely you will see many aspects of our research including a DNA helix, comet, spheroid, multilayer and pion The Medical Biophysics Department (or the Biophysics Department as it was originally named), established in 1973 under the leadership of Lloyd Skarsgard, was the founding research program of the BC Cancer Research Centre. Some of the Department's original junior investigators have now gone on to form departments of their own within this Centre. The initial impetus for the development of Medical Biophysics was the cancer treatment potential of pi mesons at TRIUMF (tri-university pi-meson facility) at UBC. The Department was responsible for the design and construction of the Biomedical beam line, as well as for the pre-clinical testing that was required to fully characterize this new beam before patients could be treated. Over the past 30 years that original research on pions has been supplanted by experiments with radiation sensitizers and hypoxic cell cytotoxins, development of probes for hypoxic cells and multilayer cultures for drug studies, characterization of low dose radiation effects and multimodality therapies. New models for tumour perfusion and chromatin conformation have been developed, as have assays for DNA damage and repair.

Biophysics is a discipline that develops an understanding of living systems through the application of physics and chemistry, seeking quantitative information about biological processes at the molecular, cellular and systems levels. As biochemistry emphasizes the description of the chemical constituents and reactions of living things, biophysics emphasizes the description of their physical properties, structures and interrelationships. Our program spans research at the interface of physics, biology and chemistry. The interdepartmental group at UCSF consists of forty-five faculty members drawn from a variety of fields employing biophysical and computational techniques. Approximately fifty students are enrolled in the program.

The Department of Molecular Biophysics was established in Lund in 1988. The Department is located within the Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (Kemicentrum) which is probably the largest research unit for chemistry in Scandinavia hosting all chemistry divisions within Lund University. The division of Molecular Biophysics is focussing on the analysis of the structure and function of biological macromolecules. It is exceedingly hard to get an understanding of the function of a macromolecular system without information of its structure. The main method has been x-ray diffraction but a group active in electron microscopy will join the department shortly. In addition a group focussing on bioinformatics, particularly the structural aspects of it has recently joined us. In bioinformatics the relationship between sequence–structure-function or between different structures is the main interest. These methods together with NMR form the basis of the field structural biology. The laboratory is well equiped for modern X-ray crystallographic and molecular biology research. We also serve the X-ray crystallography beamline BL711 at MAXII synchrotron.
