Description
The subject of classical mechanics is part of the core of physics. This course treats the traditional topics of classical mechanics at an intermediate level, including: linear and nonlinear oscillations; Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics; the two-body problem with central forces; rotating frames of reference; rigid body motion; scattering; coupled oscillations and normal modes. It is essential for a student of physics to understand these topics and to be able to work with them at a reasonable mathematical level. This challenge will take the bulk of the semester. However, it is also important to see mechanics as a lively subject that is still evolving. Therefore, we will interject several topics that have developed more recently. A prime example is chaos, which has been well understood only since 1975. We shall explore the chaotic dynamics of the pendulum in a computer project and several lectures. A second example is the mechanics of fluids. We shall not have time to explore this subject deeply, but we will see briefly how the mechanics of a fluid continuum can be described mathematically.

This slim but delightfully self-contained text is based on forty or so lectures given to first year physics undergraduates in a British university. It covers the elements of classical mechanics and special relativity at an introductory level. The informal style of writing reflects the lively spirit of the lecture course and engages the reader as the story unfolds. McCall has made some judicious choices as to content and level of presentation. The topics covered in its nine chapters are: Newton’s Laws, One-Dimensional Motion, Oscillatory Motion, Two-Body Dynamics, Relativity 1: Space and Time, Relativity 2: Energy and Momentum, Gravitational Orbits, Rigid Body Dynamics, Rotating Frames. Each chapter ends with a summary of important results derived in that chapter. Some might argue that the inclusion of oscillatory motion and relativity might be departing somewhat from the main theme but their inclusion here helps enrich and enliven the overall coverage. The scope and level of treatment are comparable to that covered in Chapters 3 to 9 of Mansfield and O’Sullivan

CLASSICAL MECHANICS
The study of motion of objects such as, bicycles, scooters, cars, trains, aeroplanes, ships, etc. is familiar to us in our day to day life. This is called Newtonian or Classical Mechanics. This study can be divided into two parts : Kinematics and Dynamics Kinematics deals with the description of motion without inquiring about the causes of motion.
