SERVICES
The Electronics Shop group can design, develop, construct, and test large quantities of various analog/digital instrumentation to stringent specifications. Nanovolts to kilovolts and millihertz to a gigahertz are the ranges covered. Over 300 pieces of quality commercial electronic test equipment ( mostly Hewlett Packard and Tektronix, some Wavetek, Keithley, and Fluke ) is available for loan to internal research groups. Commercial electronic test equipment is repaired inexpensively.
CAPABILITIES
  • Low noise design PC Board design (surface mount or thru-hole) using microwave techniques to yield low radiation and crosstalk Computerized PC Board layout using PCAD or PADS Comprehensive electronic CAD software is routinely used. ie. Analog/Digital mixed mode circuit simulator (SPICE) , System simulator, Data maniupulator/plotter, Symbolic and numerical math packages. Mechanical package (card cage etc.) design and assembly

Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, Quantum Electronics
[see our new Research Opportunities Brochure Optics and the optical sciences are among the most dynamic areas of physics. These topics have led to new fundamental insights into the study of matter, and its applications include communications, medicine, manufacturing, and even entertainment. At SUNY Stony Brook, research groups in departments including chemistry, electrical engineering, and the biological sciences are increasingly dependent on optical science and technology for furthering their missions. Long Island is host to several companies with optics as part or all of their business, including Northrup-Grumman and Symboltek. A number of faculty in the Physics Department at Stony Brook share an interest in the optical sciences, and their laboratories offer research opportunities for levels of students.

301 Physics 9 (core) Full Year
This course is algebra-based and provides the basic principles of physics and applies these concepts to global phenomena. Emphasis is placed on developing a complete understanding of the nature of various effects and the ability to solve problems. Learning is achieved through hand-on experiments, projects, computer labs, multimedia technology, and class demonstrations. The curriculum covers the topics of mechanics, kinematics, dynamics, and conservation laws of energy and momentum. 302 Intermediate Physics 10 (core) Full Year
This algebra-based course is a continuation of Physics 301. The first trimester covers heat, kinetic theory, properties of gases, liquids and solids, and the laws of thermodynamics. Second and third trimesters are devoted to the study of electrostatics, properties of direct current, and magnetism. The curriculum includes projects, experiments, labs, and problem solving exercises. 303 Advanced Physics 11 (core) Full Year
The goal of this course is to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of the principles of physics and examine the relationships which exist between physics and chemistry and biology. Topics to be covered include- mechanical waves and sound, optics, elements of quantum mechanics and elements of modern physics.
