Department of Atomic and Laser Physics Seminars Hilary Term 2003 The following seminars will be held on Mondays at in the Audrey Wood Seminar Room of the Clarendon Laboratory 20 January (Week 1) No Seminar 27 January (Week 2) Professor Eric Braaten, Ohio State University Efimov Physics in Alkali Atoms 27 January (Week 2) Professor Eric Braaten, Ohio State University Efimov Physics in Alkali Atoms In the 1970’s, Efimov showed that if particles have a strong resonant 2-body interaction, the low-energy 3-body observables are universal, independent of the details of the 2-body potential. In the extreme resonant limit, there is an infinite sequence of 3-body bound states whose binding energies differ by multiplicative factors of 515. Efimov physics may be observable in experiments on Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali atoms at a Feschbach resonance. Efimov’s predictions apply strictly only if there are no deeply-bound 2-body states. This assumption fails for alkali atoms, which have dozens of deep 2-body bound states. I will explain how the universal predictions are modified by the effects of deep 2-body bound states.

Currently our investigations concentrate only on one topic in quantum information:
    • Decoherence in quantum systems
Olavi Dannenberg studies decoherence in finite and closed quantum systems and maps out some basic scaling relations and similarities to the behaviour of open quantum systems.

Summer Program in Physics and Astronomy. 10week on-campus undergraduate research program. Research areas include Astronomy Astrophysics, Biological Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Plasma and laser physics, Quantum Optics, and Physics Education.
    http://www.pas.rochester.edu:80/mainFrame/education/special/specialREU.html
Directors: Priscilla S. Auchincloss and Arie Bodek The Physics and Astronomy Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program is funded by the National Science Foundation to support ten to twelve highly-qualified students to undertake supervised research projects in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, for a period of 10 weeks each summer. Departmental faculty conduct research in diverse experimental and theoretical areas, including Biological Physics Condensed Matter Physics High Energy Physics Nuclear Physics ... Quantum Optics , and Physics Education. Each summer, the Department's research effort involves approximately 30 undergraduate students, in addition to approximately 120 graduate students, 35 postdoctoral research associates, and 30 regular faculty members. Much of the research performed by past undergraduate research assistants has been published in scientific journals. Many students have also presented their work at National Conferences and undergraduate research symposia at the University of Rochester. Program : Over the 10-week summer research period, participants attend a series of informal seminars covering research topics as well as others, such as preparing for graduate school. These seminars are intended to foster discussion among REU students and faculty, and to serve as a basis for further social and scientific interaction. Students whose projects are primarily experimental are encouraged to attend mini-courses in electronics and in machine shop techniques. The core research experience takes place in the context of research groups working at the University's research facilities (e.g. the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, Mees Observatory), local industrial laboratories, and several of the national laboratories. Students present their work at an informal symposium at the end of the summer. They are encouraged to work with their research advisers toward completion of publications, submission of abstracts, and presentations of their work at professional and student conferences.

This developing interest in expanding the potential of laser physics has resulted in an important new focus on light-matter interaction and given rise to the field of nonlinear optics. Laser-Molecule Interaction presents the first cohesive treatment of both the fundamentals of laser science and the study of nonlinear optics. The authors, Jean Reni Lalanne, Andri Ducasse, and Stanislaw Kielich, are pioneers in the field who have contributed greatly to the study of the interaction of lasers with matter and its practical applications in the world.

Research in Atomic and Laser Physics spans the range from the fundamental to the applied. High precision laser and spectroscopic experiments yield basic information on the underlying physics. Novel types of atom and ion trap are studied for use in fundamental experiments. High power and short pulse lasers are used to probe and modify atomic and plasma processes and to investigate non-linear optical phenomena. Development of new lasers with a wide variety of scientific, medical and technical applications is actively pursued.
Our work is described in more detail under research , and some of our research groups run web servers giving even more details of their work.
