This developing interest in expanding the potential of laser physics has resulted in an important new focus on light-matter interaction and given rise to the field of nonlinear optics. Laser-Molecule Interaction presents the first cohesive treatment of both the fundamentals of laser science and the study of nonlinear optics. The authors, Jean Reni Lalanne, Andri Ducasse, and Stanislaw Kielich, are pioneers in the field who have contributed greatly to the study of the interaction of lasers with matter and its practical applications in the world.

    Plasma and Laser Physics
    The study of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas is currently in the midst of a renaissance. In Astrophysics, new observations and computational techniques have revealed the ubiquity of non-linear plasma processes in environments as diverse as star-forming regions and the environments surrounding black holes. To properly account for the life-cycle of stars and galaxies, one must understand the origin and behavior of the magnetic fields that play a critical role in nearly all astrophysical flows. In the laboratory, the current generation of high-power lasers has opened a new window into high-energy-density plasma environments. Energy densities in excess of 10 ergs/cm , such as exist in the core of stars, are now accessible to laboratory studies. With the advent of the next generation of super lasers, controlled thermonuclear ignition has finally come within reach. Ignition will be attained by inertial confinement (ICF) of a hot dense plasma compressed by the super lasers over an interval of a few nanoseconds. With the construction of the National Ignition Facility , a $1.5 billion, 1.8-MJ laser at the

    The Laser Physics Centre
    The Laser Physics Centre is one of the eight Departments which make up the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the ANU. The Laser Physics Centre focuses on the design of lasers and their application to the study of physical sciences. Work ranges from the growth and manipulation of materials for applied photonics to lasers as spectroscopic tools to probe the structure of matter. Laser cooling and trapping techniques are used to create sources of metastable helium atoms for studying atom optics and atomic collision physics. A bright beam generates a high flux, low divergence beam of moderately slow atoms (~100 m/s), while a magneto-optic trap confines and cools them to sub-milliKelvin temperatures. These sources are then used to perform atom lithography, to study atom-atom and electron-atom collisions, to guide atoms through hollow optical fibres, and to create atomic beamsplitters and other devices for atom interferometry. The Centre has an active research program involving novel materials such as organically modified silicate glasses which are essential for advancing the technologies of photonics and optical communications. Research spans the complete range from growth of such materials to the design and fabrication of waveguides and other photonic devices. The Centre has an extensive suite of device fabrication facilities such as laser direct write systems which enable us to manufacture "cutting edge" photonic devices such as planar waveguides, couplers and interferometers.

    Research Summary
      The Centre is engaged in laser-based research on topics spanning both fundamental and applied physics and engineering. A feature of much of the research is the high degree of collaboration with most departments in RSPhysSE. These include: the Department of Electronic Materials Engineering, involving joint studies of nonlinear optical properties of semiconductors and glasses doped with semiconducting nanocrystals; the Optical Science Centre involving joint work on optical solitons and guided waves; the Atomic and Molecular Physics Laboratory involving work on both UV laser spectroscopy and atom cooling and trapping; the Plasma Research Laboratory studying the properties of silica thin films; the Department of Nuclear Physics involving the use of pulsed laser deposition for the production of carbon stripper foils for the 14UD accelerator; and Applied Mathematics involving studies of rare earth triple chain soaps and novel carbonaceous materials produced by pulsed laser deposition. Outside the School the Centre contributes to the work of: the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Centre with specific collaboration with the University of Sydney on the production of novel materials for use in the fabrication of planar lightwave circuits;

    The laser, invented about 40 years ago, has now become an essential part of our civilization, not only in science and industry but also in everyday life (laser pointer, CD/DVD player). But how does it really work? If you want to know, come and see! In order to understand the principle of a laser we need to start with topics such as the resonant interaction of light and matter, optical modes and resonators, laser dynamics. In the second half of the semester we'll discuss some important examples of specific laser types, such as solid-state lasers, helium-neon lasers, and diode lasers: how they work, what their characteristics are, and where they are used typically. There will be demonstration experiments (some even "hands-on") and live computer simulations in class that will illustrate the key concepts and characteristics of lasers.
