The advent of a near field scanning optical microscope capable of resolving subwavelength structure has attracted much attention to near field optics. The conference will be focused on the physics, device, and information processing aspects of the emerging near field optics. New applications, studies, findings, concepts, and theories are thus solicited. This conference provides a forum for exchange of ideas and information for people interested in near field optics in particular, and in physics, optics, and information processing in general. Papers presenting theories, experiments, computational studies, technologies, and applications are solicited. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to the following:

Table of Contents

Chapter 1: Introduction to Nonlinear Optics
Chapter 1.1: Definition of Nonlinear Optics

Chapter 1.2: Major Events in History of Nonlinear Optics

Chapter 1.3: Features of Interaction of Intense Light with Matter

Chapter 1.4: Theoretical Framework of Nonlinear Optics
Nonlinear optics has been a rapidly growing field in recent decades. It is based on the study of effects and phenomena related to the interaction of intense coherent light radiation with matter. Physics of Nonlinear Optics describes various major nonlinear optical effects, including physical principles, experimental techniques, up-to-date research achievements, and current or potential applications. This book features clear conceptual descriptions, concise formulations, and emphasizes both theoretical and experimental aspects of nonlinear optics. The readability of this book is particularly enhanced by a series of color photographs showing the spectacular appearances of various nonlinear optical effects. Both authors of this book are outstanding research scientists renowned in their professional areas. Their major research achievements in nonlinear optics include the pioneering studies of two-wave-coupled refractive-index change, Raman-enhanced self-focusing, optical-frequency Pockels effect, stimulated Kerr scattering, optical phase-conjugation via backward stimulated emission, and two-photon-absorption based optical limiting, stabilization and reshaping.

Welcome to the x-ray optics and microscopy group at Stony Brook. We use coherent soft x rays for optics experiments. Much of our effort is directed towards using Fresnel zone plates to produce the smallest focused spot of electromagnetic waves of any wavelength, and exploiting that microfocused beam for studies of biological and materials science specimens. Thanks to the Department of Energy (Office of Health and Environmental Research) and the National Science Foundation (ECS Division) for support!
