Optics - The Science of Light
Guide picks Optics covers a wide range of phenomena from prisms and lenses to rainbows, color and cameras.
Measure the speed of light with Chocolate and a Microwave

Nothing travels faster than light - it only takes 8 minutes for it to reach the Earth from the nearest star, the Sun, which is 150 million kilometres away. Now anyone can measure this speed - with chocolate stars and a microwave oven! New Upper Limit on the Photon Mass
If a photon had mass, it would drastically affect our understanding of the structure of nature. As it stands, we know only that it is very, very light, but a new, even lower, limit on the photon mass has been established. Prisms An applet that demonstrates the dispersion of white light (separation into constituent colors) by a series of rotating prisms.

Ages 6-9. 8.25" x 8.25" 24 pages
No. BSP20-LM. Only $4.95 The Optics Book
What could be more important than light? It makes plants grow; gives us food; lets us see bright, beautiful colors; and provides warmth. But to grasp the nature of lightand visionwe must understand optics. These delightful hands-on experiments vividly demonstrate the workings of absorption, reflection, refraction, and more. Toast marshmallows by the sun's intense heat. Create a "ray box," and view the entire spectrum through a water prism, and a rainbow in soap bubbles. Or try filters to really see the world through rose-colored glasses! Along with a materials list, the book includes safety instructions, explanations of the scientific principles underlying each experiment, a note on color blindness, and a glossary. Ages 9 and up. 80 pages.

General
The aim of these annual meetings is to provide a common platform for exchange of ideas, scientific results and instrumental techniques, with the only requirement that there exists a relation to atmospheric studies by optical methods. Even if the meetings are announced as European meetings, and European countries take turns in organising them, people from all over the world are welcomed to attend. The Annual Optical Meetings were started in Stockholm in the fall of 1973, with the intention of bringing together scientists, engineers and students using optical methods to study the upper atmosphere. In 2002 the meeting is organized by the Leibniz-Institute of Atmospheric Physics
Local organization committee (LOC)
The meeting is chaired by Prof. Dr. Franz-Josef L¼bken. The local organization committee members are Dr. Matthias Alpers, Prof. Dr. Ulf von Zahn and Mrs. Marion Lange (all from IAP). If you want to send an email to the LOC-members please use this link Mrs. Marion Lange

Imaging solutions using nonlinear optical approaches are under investigation as well as laser ultrasonic industrial process monitoring. Much of the research featured on these pages has been funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences program. Our BES program is titled Microstructure NDE using Imaging Laser Ultrasonics. Individual web sites have been developed to describe each research thrust: Linear Elastic Wave Imaging Anisotropic properties of materials can be determined by measuring the propagation of elastic waves in different directions. A laser imaging approach has been developed at the INEEL that utilizes the adaptive property of photorefractive materials to produce a real-time measurement of the anti-symmetric Lamb or flexural traveling wave mode displacement and phase. Continuous excitation is employed and the data is recorded and displayed in all directions simultaneously at video camera frame rates. Fourier transform of the data produces an image of the wave slowness in all planar directions. The results demonstrate imaging of microstructural isotropy and anisotropy and stress induced ansiotropy in plates.

    The Department
The Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering is a joint department of University College London (UCL) and the UCL Hospitals Trust . The academic and research work of the Department is concentrated primarily within Shropshire House (shown opposite), a short distance from the main UCL campus. It also has laboratories on three other nearby sites: University College Hospital, Middlesex Hospital, and Whittington Hospital. Visitors requiring directions how to locate Shropshire House should click here The spectrum of Medical Physics activities undertaken in this Department is probably the broadest of any in the United Kingdom. Roughly one half of the 130 members of staff are employed by the UCL Hospitals to provide medical physics service. The rest are principally involved in the pursuit of academic research, including industrial contract research, and teaching activities associated with the graduate and post-graduate degrees offered by the Department.
