Selected student participants will receive financial support from SPRL during their stay at the laboratory and will be given positions as Undergraduate Research Assistants. This support will be provided at a typical monthly level of ~ $1280. Although most participants will either work during the summer period (3 months at 100% effort), work during the academic year (~8 months at 30% effort) is possible. Eligibility All undergraduate students enrolled in accredited schools are eligible to apply, though preference will be given to those entering their junior and senior year and specializing in scientific or engineering areas. Minority, female, and physically disabled students are encouraged to apply as are students from institutions where research opportunities are limited. A majority of the positions will be available for students attending undergraduate schools (including small liberal arts colleges, community colleges, etc.) where research opportunities are limited. Student participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

It has its primary intent to lead in the definition, development, operation and promotion of collaborative efforts in the collection and utilization of space physics data and models. The SPDF will respond to the research needs of the space physics community. The SPDF (Code 632) is a part of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and is the host for many programs and efforts formerly part of the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) until the reorganization that formed SPDF in June 1992. The SPDF remains an evolving organization, with a professional staff approximately evenly split between working scientists and technologists.

Sun-Earth Connection (SEC) Data Availability Catalog
At the request of NASA HQ's Office of Space Science, we in association with the flight projects have compiled a catalog of "Data Availability for Current Sun-Earth Connection Missions, Programs, and Campaigns." This catalog is an attempt to summarize the kinds and extent of data now being made available in current flight programs sponsored by the Sun-Earth Connection theme. This catalog and associated reports serve as a focused information source for NASA HQs management interests in availability and accessibility of mission data. As a secondary purpose, the catalog can also be used as an alternative way for the NASA science community to locate data of interest from current missions. The Sun-Earth Connection (SEC) Data Availability Catalog (SPDAC) interface starts with a Mission Overview Matrix where the mission names (and subsequent investigation names) link to the next level of SPDAC information. Appropriate updates (to edit existing information or to add entries) are possible at each level. Please note that updates submitted are manually reviewed and, while immediately acknowledged, will not be immediately reflected in the displayed catalog. Users may also send update information directly to mailto:spdac_mail@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov

      What is Space Physics?
We define Space Physics to be the study of ionized gas in the earth's environment and its interaction with the neutral atmosphere and with natural and man made boundaries. When long range electric and magnetic forces dominate the evolution of a volume of ionized gas it is referred to as a plasma. Space physics research at the University of Washington covers topics from very weakly ionized gas, such as that of the earth's lower and middle atmosphere, to the plasmas of interplanetary space which are nearly fully ionized. Understanding space physics involves learning about a multiply connected set of ionized gas phenomena stretching from the sun to the surface of the earth and the other planets. The sun emits a variable stream of plasma called the solar wind which in turn interacts strongly with the Earth's magnetic field, forming a magnetic bubble in the solar wind called the
