Taking part in the meeting for the first time with observer status was Lithuanian culture minister Gintautas Kevisas. The talks focused on the significance of culture for promoting one’s country abroad. Apart from sharing experiences, the ministers and accompanying experts considered joint initiatives to promote the culture of the Višehrad Group countries. The ministers agreed that at least one-third of the budget of the International Višehrad Group should be designated for cultural projects. The participants declared that each year each $50,000. from each of those countries’ budgets should be ear-marked for joint cultural undertakings. One of the firsts such projects will be an international folk festival etches by Dürer and Rembrandt. ‘I never imagined the culture ministers of Poland and Lithuania ever meeting over the manuscript of ”Pan Tadeusz” (a work set in early-19th-century Lithuaniatranslator),’ said the archives’ director, Dr Adolf Juzwenko. ‘Wr inister Ujazdowski remarked.

Prime Minister Leszek Miller dismissed Economy Minister Jacek Piechota and State Treasury Minister Wieslaw Kaczmarek on January 6th. The changes were designed to boost the economy and the government's popularity ahead of a referendum on European Union membership. Mr. Piechota's job disappeared following the merger of the Labor and Economy ministries into a ministry headed by current Labor Minister Jerzy Hausner, while Mr. Kaczmarek was replaced by Slawomir Cytrycki, a former banker and an adviser to Miller's government. The Prime Minister also appointed Lech Nikolski to the post of minister in charge of Poland's EU information campaign, and Aleksandra Jakubowska as head of the PM's political office. Due to the liquidation of the post of government commissioner for European information, the commissioner Slawomir Wiatr became an undersecretary of state in a new ministry run by Nikolski.

HISTORY AND CULTURE
The first Polish state was established in the 10th century by Mieszko I. Under him the Poles became Christians. Mieszko's descendants, known as the Piast Dynasty, expanded Polish power. Major enemies at this time were the German Teutonic Knights and the Tatars. After a period of political unrest Wladyslaw I reunited the kingdom in 1320, and his son Casimir III the Great protected it from its enemies and developed its economy and society. In 1386 Queen Jadwiga married Wladyslaw II Jagiello, the grand duke of Lithuania, uniting two powerful states. In 1410 their armies defeated the German Teutonic Knights at the battle of Tannenberg. (See also Jagiellon Dynasty.) In the 16th century, Poland and Lithuania expanded eastward to annex much of the Ukraine and some Russian territory. From this time the Russians also became one of Poland's major opponents. The greatest king of this period was Sigismund II Augustus.
In 1572 Sigismund II died without an heir. Under the following Vasa Dynasty, Poland became involved in wars with Sweden, Russia, and Turkey. In 1610 the Poles succeeded in occupying Moscow, but this success was short-lived. Russian advances on Polish territory and a Swedish invasion in 1655 created a major crisis. The Poles fought back, however, and the Swedish invasion was checked while a truce with Russia was obtained. John III Sobieski defended Vienna against the Turks in 1683 and saved Western Europe from a Turkish invasion.
Prussia, Russia, and Austria all annexed parts of Poland in 1772. A small Polish state was left at the mercy of its enemies. In 1793 Poland was further partitioned among the three powers. The patriot Thaddeus Kosciusko led a peasant army in a national insurrection against the Russians. In 1795 Poland's last remaining territory was occupied by the three partitioning powers. Many Poles fled the country. In 1807 Napoleon supported the formation of a small and weak Polish state, but after Napoleon's defeat by Russia the Russians returned.

Warsaw (PMN)Just like filmmaker Roman Polanski, the Polish co-producer of "The Pianist", which has received seven Oscar nominations, could be forced to miss the awards ceremony. Co-producer Lew Rywin could be prevented from traveling to the ceremony, because he is not allowed to leave Poland while awaiting trial on charges of corruption. In a corruption scandal which has rocked Poland, the head of Poland's biggest newspaper, Adam Michnik, said Rywin, who owns Heritage Films and is a former top official at Canal Plus Polska, had asked him for a $17.5 million-dollar bribe on behalf of Prime Minister Leszek Miller. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters has awarded Polanski's latest movie, "The Pianist," seven Oscar nominations, including those in the coveted best picture, best director and best actor categories.

The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition
The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition is one of the oldest events of its type in the world, and enjoys great prestige and universal renown. In the seventy years of its existence, the competition has evolved and transformed itself, altered and improved its form, and created its own extensive tradition. The initiator of the Frederick Chopin Piano Competition was Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew (1887-1980), an outstanding Polish pianist, teacher and composer.
Prof. Jerzy ¯urawlew
The first Chopin Competition took place on 23-30 January 1927 in the concert hall of the Warsaw Philharmonic. The next Competitions in 1932 and 1937 were also held there, at a five year interval, in accordance with the rules of the organisers. The 1942 Competition was not held owing to the Second World War, and the Competition could not be continued until several years after the war. The first postwar and the fourth International Frederick Chopin Competition took place in 1949, in the "Roma" concert hall, which is still standing in Nowogrodzka Str., the temporary home of the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Opera. The Competition became the culmination of the Chopin Year, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the death of this great composer. The next Competition was organised six years later, in 1955. This change to the traditional five year-cycle was caused by the reconstruction of the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, which was promoted soon afterwards to the rank of a national institution. From 1955 onwards, the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition has been held in the National Philharmonic Hall every five years without a break.

Support from John Paul II
"It is the Holy Father's wish that by looking for the objective truth about Polish-Jewish relations in the past, the future museum will be able to show and remind people about the positive cooperation between Poles and Jews for their common good. In this spirit, His Holiness is asking in prayer for the necessary strength and God's Blessings for the initiators of the idea of the Museum, and its creators."
John Paul II reacted with good wishes and prayer to the news that a Museum of the History of Polish Jews is being created in Warsaw. The Vatican's Secretary of State sent them to us in a letter of May 29, 2001. The letter also contains the opinion that the creation of the museum as a memorial and an educational center for future generations deserves special attention, as it will be a memorial site for the fates of nations connected to each other by history. The letter expresses the hope that "in accord with the convictions of the initiators of this work in progress, the popularization of knowledge about Polish-Jewish relations, as difficult and painful as this process may be, will contribute to the elimination of stereotypes, antipathy and mutual grudges"
This support from John Paul II is very important, since the present Pope has done more for the understanding between different nations and faiths than any one of his predecessors or authorities within the Catholic Church. From the first moment of his pontificate, he has been preaching for Jewish-Christian dialog, condemning anti-Semitism, and has helped Jews and Poles to understand each other. In 1981, he made an unprecedented visit to the Roman Synagogue, where he met with the head Rabbi of Rome, Prof. Emilio Toaff. The crowning event of the Church's change in attitude towards Jews, which was initiated by the Pope from Poland, was John Paul II's visit to the Holy Land, which moved the entire world. This uncommon pilgrimage opened the hearts of many people and built an atmosphere in which our vision has become much more real.
