CLAUDIO ARRAU
BIOGRAPHY
Claudio Arrau, renowned throughout the world as one of the supreme keyboard masters of the century, stands today at the summit of his long and legendary career, for the one artistic goal he has pursued for a lifetime: the total fusion of virtuosity and meaning. Where other famous pianists play the piano for excitement, power or display, Arrau plays to probe, to divine, to interpret. Says Arrau, "An interpreter must give his blood to the work interpreted." The famed late doyen of London music critics, Sir Neville Cardus of the Guardian, explained Arrau vividly: "Arrau is the complete pianist. He can revel in the keyboard for its own pianistic sake, representing to us the instrument's range and power, but he can also go beyond piano playing as we are led by his art to the secret chambers of the creative imagination." In a tribute by the Berlin Philharmonic, which bestowed the Hans von Bulow Medal on Arrau in 1980, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of his debut with that great orchestra, it was put even better: "When Arrau bends over the keyboard, it is as if Music and only Music itself, is flowing out of his entire body. There is not a nuance of feeling or sound that he has not mastered. His pianissimo is more eloquent, more mysterious than that of others, and his fortissimo has more depth of dimension and is more limitless." But a London Sunday Times interview some years back explained the Arrau mystique best of all: "One regards him as a sort of miracle; the piano is the most machinelike of instruments except the organ - all those rods, levers, little felt pads, wires, no intimate subtle human connection with it by breath, tongueing, or the string player's direct engagement with speaking vibrations. But Arrau makes it live, like God teaching Adam on Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel roof; liquid, mysterious, profound, alive."

an Appreciation by ROBERT MATTHEW-WALKER
With Mieczyslaw Horszowski playing in public at the age of 95, Magda Tagliaferra at 92 (she was born in 1893), Rubinstein at 88, Serkin at 85 (he celebrates this birthday next month) and Horowitz at 84, the mere fact of an international pianist playing in his mid-80s has become - dare one say it? - an almost commonplace occurrence. But 85 is, by any standards (not least those of a performing artist) a venerable age, one which affords us the opportunity of paying tribute to an undoubtedly great pianist in the final years of his career. Arrau in 1977 Arrau's eminence as a player of world stature has to be considered against his background, for he was born, on February 6th 1903, in Chillan, the capital of Nuble Province in South Central Chile, itself located in Chile's central valley as a leading agricultural and commercial centre. We tend to expect - even today, considering how many fine young artists hail from the Orient - that great pianists, especially those who excel in the central German-European repertoire, almost ought to be European by birth, but Arrau is, of course, Chilean. Indeed, in the field of music, it is difficult to name a more distinguished 20th-century practitioner in the art throughout the entire South American continent than Claudio Arrau. He received his very early instruction in piano-playing from his mother, who was a talented amateur musician, and who discerned her son's musical gifts when he was barely able to speak. When still a child, Arrau gave his first public recital in the Chilean capital, Santiago, playing music by Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin - three of the comparatively few composers with whom we tend to link his name today. It would appear that even at that very early age, his natural musical inclinations were already formed.

Claudio Arrau (1903-1991)
Remembering Claudio Arrau on the tenth anniversary of his passing
"He is a high priest of absolute textual interpretation coupled with virtuosity," wrote the noted German critic Joachim Kaiser in an attempt to capture the mystery of Arrau's playing. Claudio Arrau, the legendary Chilean-American pianist who passed away on June 9, 1991, was an artist without any spectacular mannerisms or interpretative excesses. An earnest, reserved man, he kept the lid on his emotional depths, only subtly granting insights into their richness during his performances. In an obituary that appeared in "The Times" of June 10, 1991, Richard Morrison wrote that "he made his technique and his character subservient to music, not vice versa." Arrau's international career began when, at the age of 20, he came to the United States for the first time. In 1927 he won First Prize at the International Geneva Competition, judged by a jury that included Cortot and Rubinstein. In 1935 he was the first pianist ever to play the complete keyboard works of J.S. Bach in 12 recitals, and in subsequent seasons, all of the Beethoven sonatas and Mozart sonatas, as well as the works of Schubert and Weber. In 1941 Arrau returned to the United States, giving a sensational Carnegie Hall recital which added the final jewel to the crown of his international fame. An indefatigable performer, Arrau undertook countless tours, sometimes playing over 100 concerts a year. While his vast repertoire ranged from Bach to contemporary composers, it clearly centered around the composers of the Romantic era. He was celebrated above all for his performances of Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt and Debussy. Arrau was hailed as one of the last representatives of the pianistic tradition of creative liberty that had been passed on directly from Liszt. Yet in spite of his astounding technique, he preferred to appear as an "anti-virtuoso", whose rigor and precision never flagged. "Despite its apparently rhetorical sweep and its boldness of conception," wrote Jeremy Siepmann in "The Guardian" on June 11, 1991, "Arrau's playing was essentially that of a seeker, an asker of questions on an epic scope."

Such a pianist is Claudio Arrau. Like Liszt and Busoni before him, Arrau, whether playing Beethoven or Brahms, or Chopin and Schumann, or Schubert and Mozart, or Debussy and Liszt, reaches to the core of the style and the meaning of every composer he performs. As the London Sunday Times has written: "One regards Arrau as a sort of miracle. He makes the piano live, like God teaching Adam on Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel dome: liquid, mysterious, profound." This historic performance was filmed in May 1984 when Maestro Arrau returned to play in Santiago, Chile, after an absence of 17 years. He was given a reception by his countrymen probably without equal. Program:
  • Beethoven: Sonata No.7 in D Major, Op.10 No.3
  • Chopin: Ballade No.3 in A Flat Major, Op.47
  • Liszt: Sonetto del Petrarca No.104

The name Claudio Arrau (1903-1991) is familiar to all piano devotees. His legendary career, marked by extraordinary performances, accolades and recordings, spanned eight decades. And yet, the pre-war recordings of Arrau exhibit a completely different artistry than those he later made. Arrau's later work, the stereo LP recordings, reveal the seasoned, polished and philosophical master. The early recordings, with much repertoire never played later in his career, demonstrate a young artist taking risks, being spontaneous and displaying great virtuosity. The result is pianism with fire, vitality and drama. return to main menu Liner Notes Wanderer Fantasy Goldberg Variations Spanish Rhapsody Nineteen hundred and twenty-three and 1924 brought Arrau to the United States for the first time, but the tour was not a financial success. He returned to an inflation-ridden Berlin virtually penniless, and struggled to regain his footing. Seeking help, Arrau engaged a Jungian analyst, and a bond between the two was formed which lasted for many years. Through their work together the pianist was able to put his prodigy years behind him, and in 1926 Arrau returned to the Stern Conservatory as a professor of piano, a position which he maintained until 1940. He entered and won the 1927 Concours International de Pianistes Arrau had made only one recording so far, an acoustic Vocalion disc dating from 1921, on which a weighty and almost epic Schubert

CLAUDIO ARRAU Currently making his 16 th Born in a small Chilean village 54 years ago, Arrau was able to sit down and play a movement from a Beethoven sonata at sight at the age of four. It was most extraordinary for there had never been a professional musician in the family. His mother played the piano, and the child might have learned to play by ear. But he did more; he taught himself to read notes; or rather, reading notes came to him as easily as gazing at a picture book. At five he gave his first recital, and at seven he made his official debut in Santiago. The Chilean Government, overcome by the young genius on its hands, shipped him and his whole family off to Germany in order that he might study with one of the great teachers of the time, Martin Krause, to show how he can trace his musical heritage all the way back to Beethoven, who had tought Czerny, who had taught Liszt, who had taught Krause. As Chile's most celebrated international citizen abroad, Arrau is given the privilege of travelling on a diplomatic passport, which considerably facilitates his many comings and goings all over the world. And, as the greatest pianist to come out of South America since Teresa Carreno more than 50 years ago, practically every Latin-American government has decorated him at one time or another. The latest was Mexico, which named him "Hijo Predilecto" (Favorite Son), the country's highest decoration in the arts. Return to the 1956 - 1957 Season Return to West Shore Concert Series main page

The title 'nocturne' was coined by the Irish composer and pianist John Field, but it was Chopin who developed the form and took it to new heights. As you'd expect, the Nocturnes are (generally) quiet, reflective pieces with song-like melodies, just right for night-time listening.
The Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau was considered one of the very greatest of last century, and loved Chopin's music deeply. Asked once what he considered to be the peak of Chopin's output, Arrau replied, 'I think some of the Nocturnes.'
