The Real Pianist Born in 1911, Wladyslaw Szpilman studied the piano at the Warsaw Conservatory under A. Michalowski and subsequently at the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Kuenste) in Berlin under Arthur Schnabel and Leonid Kreutzer. He also studied composition under Franz Schreker. In 1933, he returned to Warsaw where he quickly became a celebrated pianist and a composer of both classical and popular music. From 1945 to 1963 he held the position of Director of Music at Polish Radio. He also performed as a soloist and with the violinists Bronislav Gimpel, Roman Totenberg, Ida Haendel, Tadeusz Wronski and Henryk Szeryng. In 1963, he and Gimpel founded the Warsaw Piano Quintet with which Szpilman performed world-wide until 1986. During these years he composed several symphonic works and about 500 songs, including some children's songs, as well as music for radio plays and film. Especially his film scores and songs become very popular in Poland before the 2nd WW. Szpilman Web Site

Bermel's
Soul Garden Derek Bermel is one of those musicians with so much talent in so many areas that he could easily be mistakenly labeled a dilletante. Afterall, he writes chamber, symphonic, dance, theater and pop works, and is a terrific clarinetist, pianist and conductor, who is just as comfortable with jazz and rock as he is with classical. But, Soul Garden, a new CD of Bermel's chamber works, demonstrates just how serious a composer Bermel is and how well he has assimilated his varied musical experiences and made then uniquely his own. Bermel has studied ethnomusicology and orchestration in Jerusalem, Lobi xylophone in Ghana, uillean pipes in Dublin and Thracian folk style in Bulgaria. He trained at Yale University and the University of Michigan, and later in Amsterdam, studying composition with William Albright, Louis Andriessen, William Bolcom and Michael Tenzer. The eight works on Soul Garden are performed by Bermel on the clarinet, along with cellist Fred Sherry, pianist Christopher Taylor, the Borromeo String Quartet, violist Paul Neubauer and others, and lovingly recorded by producer Judy Sherman. They present, for the first time, an overview of Bermel’s small-ensemble writing which, he has said, focus mainly on musical narratives and more conceptual pieces. The title piece, Soul Garden, was originally written for a dance company, but evolved into a piece showcasing Paul Neubauer on viola. Two pieces, Turning and SchiZm, draw on specific musical styles he was studying. A distinctive thread throughout is what he calls "gesture," his dramatic voice-like phrasing.

the Quartet
The USQ is one of the leading dutch string quartets and has enjoyed a growing international reputation as a dynamic and versatile ensemble. Bringing rediscovered and forgotten pieces back into the concert halls is one of the main focuses of the USQ, the four players strongly believe in the combination of the "classic" repertoire with the unknown, surprising and fascinating rediscoveries of the times between the wars and revolutions (1880-1950) where composers and artists that did not meet the taste of the governments had to fear for their lifes and had to leave or hide and were forgotten. Even a century further in time there still has to be done a lot of discovering! The members of the USQ have studied with Lawrence Dutton, Nobuko Imai, Aldo Parisot, Victor Liberman and with the Amadeus, Emerson and the LaSalle Quartets. Their repertoire encompasses more than two centuries of quartet composition, ranging from the quartets of Haydn to the most complex works of the avant-garde.

Messiaen 2002 International Conference
This event which was one of many throughout the world marking the 10th anniversary of the composers death took place from June 20-23 at Tapton campus music department of the University of Sheffield in the unusually attractive, leafy corner of the city.
Ably supported by Peter Hill (head of the music dept.) and Nigel Simeone, Chris Dingle packed these three days with papers, talks and concerts from contributors world wide covering every aspect of Messiaens' life and work, and for once (so I gather) the sun shone continuously on Sheffield!
As usual in this type of conference delegates ranged from the intellectually high powered theorists to the equally high powered listeners but all sharing the common bond of the love of Messiaen.
The sessions kicked off with Stephen Broad ( Oxford University ) [Olivier Messiaen: Journalist] who highlighted the not too widely known aspect of Messiaen's brief excursions into journalism from the years 1936-39. Messiaen, it emerged wrote many articles for such publications as

As a Messiaen interpreter, Mr Park is only occassionally persuasive. His principal interest in the music is the opportunity it affords him to show off, thus ignoring the fact that the point of view that informs the work developed from precisely the opposite attitude. Aside from persistently confusing rhythm for meter, nothing of Messiaen's' Catholicism and wholly spiritual perspective is immanent in Mr Park's playing. While it is easy to admire his seriousness of purpose in his survey of this repertoire, he would be well advised to take a closer look at the score and Messiaen's abundantly specific instructions, especially with regard to dynamics. A
fortissimo for Mr Park, unfortunately, becomes an occasion for dynamic stasis; he fails to exploit the interior registration of a chord, for example, which only attenuates tension in the context of a repetition, such as the climax of Premier Communion de la Vierge. Thus, in lieu of a crescendo, here and elsewhere, Mr Park simply pounds things out with a kind of merciless dispatch, seeing fit to reside within a single, opaque dynamic without change. This basic misunderstanding additionally compromises his reading of Regard de l'Esprit du Joie; as Mr Park played it with a kind of military pugilism as he punched out ruthlessly each of
its radiant chordal sequences joy had absolutely nothing to do with it. In this repertoire, Mr Park would be well advised to listen to Yvonne Loriod, whose definitive reading of

Jean-Phippe Rameau, Zoroastre Les Arts Florissants William Christie 3 CDs, Erato Allegedly a masonic allegory, this didn't recieve a very warm responce when it was first performed in 1749. Part of the reason, it is surmised, is that this basic tale of good and evil rather lacked in the usual sexual frolickings. A radical rewrite followed which took out a lot of the dances and this is the version performed in 1756. We get the dances though on an extra CD. Musicalogically, it is an interesting work, with many innovative features which are outlined in some detail by Graham Sadler in the quite large booklet which accompanies the CDs (but let us take up the cry for larger fonts in these things). For listening pleasure it is very nice. (Count K) Zez Confrey, Piano Rolls and Scores realized by Artis Wodehouse LP, Warner Classics This is fun - ragtime, jazz, boogie. Zez Confrey is a sort of Wodehouse (no, no, the writer not the performer of these pieces) figure in that he was and is regarded by some as a sort of performing flea (to pinch Sean O'Casey's opinion of PG Wodehouse). Others regard him as a serious talent both as a player and a composer. His time was the 20's and 30's and you will have no doubt about that if you have a listen. (Count K)
