Performances of Modern Monoliths Stunningly Beautiful I first listened to this CD while I was trying to write a philosophy essay; I wouldn't recommend anyone else try that. The preludes brought me nearly to tears. Messaien could make stunningly clear chord progressions using the most "dissonant" of intervals and voicings; one realizes that dissonance is relative if not non-existent. I think that even those who are turned off by most twentieth century music would appreciate these as much as I do. The remaining pieces posess an incredible drive and intensity. These early compositions show a composer already well on his way to making the profound music of his later years.

Austbo is a fantastic pianist, and delivers a flawless recording, bursting with emotion and technical brilliance. The quality of the recording itself is great, and it is a pleasure to listen to. The feeling of quality permeats this cd, a rarity from Naxos, not the most respected label around.

Ook de uitvoeringen waren in het begin van dik hout. Voor mij indertijd reden om maar niet aan deze serie te beginnen. CvZ was inderdaad redelijk enthousiast (8 voor uitvoering als ik mij goed herinner) en scheen niet zo'n last van de galm te hebben. Misschien dat dit kwam door de 'authentieke' opname locatie. Gramophone heeft pas geleden de hele set besproken en meldt een opgaande lijn in zowel opname als uitvoering, en prefereert het geheel boven Dorati. Als e.e.a. voor Kruidvat prijzen ter beschikking komt is het toch wel interessant lijkt me, vooral voor compleetheids maniakken (als mijzelf). De meeste complete Haydns zijn immers gestrand ruim voor completering. Wat die prijzen betreft: In GB liggen de prijzen voor Brilliant Classics ook veel hoger, in de regio van £3 per cd. Wel handig is dat uitgaven in slimline boxen aangeboden worden, i.p.v. die onhandige boxen met losse 'jewelcases'.

The poem of fire On November 20th, 1994, the Residentie Orchestra of the Hague gave its 90th anniversary concert, conducted by Oliver Knussen. The second half of the programme was devoted to Skryabin's symphonic poem The audience was overwhelmed and responded with ovations. Although some critics were raving, others had problems accepting the impact or the justification of the colour play. At the end of the 20th century, the performance of a work from 1910 may still provoke controversy. Skryabin's own light instrument: 12 lamps The LUCE installation: 400 lamps... Title page of the original edition of , with a drawing by the Belgian artist Jean Delville, whom Skryabin met in Brussels in 1908. This drawing is full of theosophical and esoteric symbols. Skryabin True, the Russian composer Alexander Skryabin (1872-1915) was far ahead of his time. Not only was he an important innovator of the musical language and did he conceive a wholly new approach to tonality. He also made the first attempt in history into the multimedia field. The score of his op. 60 for piano solo, large orchestra and choir, includes a two-voiced part, luce, consisting of notes (pitches) without any further indications. Historical sources prove that the composer supposed the use of a colour keyboard, an instrument that had been constructed in 1895 by the British scientist Wallace Rimington. It is also known that Skryabin possessed the synaesthetic ability to associate the hearing of a certain sound with a certain colour. Thus he made his own scale of colours where each pitch in the circle of fifths is represented by its own, specific colour.

At the end of the 20th century, the performance of a work from 1910 may still provoke controversy. Skryabin's own light instrument: 12 lamps The LUCE installation: 400 lamps... Skryabin True, the Russian composer Alexander Skryabin (1872-1915) was far ahead of his time. Not only was he an important innovator of the musical language and did he conceive a wholly new approach to tonality. He also made the first attempt in history into the multimedia field. The score of his op. 60 for piano solo, large orchestra and choir, includes a two-voiced part, luce, consisting of notes (pitches) without any further indications. Historical sources prove that the composer supposed the use of a colour keyboard, an instrument that had been constructed in 1895 by the British scientist Wallace Rimington. It is also known that Skryabin possessed the synaesthetic ability to associate the hearing of a certain sound with a certain colour. Thus he made his own scale of colours where each pitch in the circle of fifths is represented by its own, specific colour.

Foto: Edwin Roelofs http://home.planet.nl/~austbo Conservatoire National en de Ecole Normale de Musique in Parijs, aan de Juilliard School in New York, aan de "Concours de la Guilde Française des Artistes Solistes" In 1972 kwam Håkon Austbø voor het eerst naar Nederland voor een optreden met het Concertgebouworkest o.l.v. Bernhard Haitink. Twee jaar later vestigde hij zich in dit land van waaruit hij tournees door heel Europa, Amerika en Azië onderneemt. Met zijn belang wekkende repertoire en zijn ongewone veelzijdigheid heeft hij zich inmiddels een geheel eigen plaats in het muziekleven veroverd. Olivier Messiaen noemde hem "de ideale vertolker" van zijn muziek. Håkon Austbø ontving in 1989 de prijs van de Noorse muziekcritici en werd in 1992 uitgeroepen tot "vertolker van het jaar" aldaar. Hij was vanaf 1980 hoofdleraar aan het Utrechts Conservatorium en doceert nu sinds 1994 aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Verder is hij eerste vice-president van het internationale Scriabin Society, Moskou en de drijvende kracht achter het LUCE-project dat een realisatie van de kleuren partij in Skrjabins symfonisch gedicht "Prometheus" behelst.
