He first captured public attention in 1974 when, aged 25, he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. Five years later he took the coveted Avery Fisher Prize in New York. An RCA recording contract followed, and many of his recordings won top honours. In 1987 Ax became an exclusive Sony Classical artist. Recordings on this label include the two Liszt Concertos paired with the Schoenberg Concerto, two discs of solo Brahms, tangos by Piazzolla and Haydn Piano Sonatas (part of an ongoing Haydn cycle) for which he won a Grammy award. A concert pianist in the grand tradition, he has tried his hand, or rather his hands, at the period piano and the organ, with drastically different results. Ax, 51, was set to perform Copland's Symphony for Organ and Orchestra along with Brahms' formidable Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra this weekend, but pulled out of the organ piece. "The reason was that I really am not prepared to do it," he says apologetically, but honestly, over the phone. "I have never played organ. I listened to the piece and I really wanted to play it ... I just didn't realize what was involved. You have to set the organ up correctly and you have to play with your feet, which I didn't think that you had to with this piece." It wasn't long before Ax knew he would have to call it off. "I suddenly panicked and thought, Mariss [Jansons, PSO music director] is going have a fit and it is going to sound horrible. I better just call up and say, 'Look, get somebody who knows what he's doing.' " The PSO did just that, bringing in Yale organist Thomas Murray for the Copland.

Symphony Review: Idiosyncratic approach enlivens pianist's performance of Beethoven Saturday, March 04, 2000 By Andrew Druckenbrod, Post-Gazette Classical Music Writer As the 300th anniversary of the piano begins to be celebrated around the world, here's one good idea to honor the instrument: bronze Emanuel Ax. OK, that would have disastrous side effects, but the point is that he embodies everything that's good about pianists. His performance last night with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in Heinz Hall just provided another in a long line of examples of this. The concert featured the return of Music Director Mariss Jansons, back from a bout with the flu that caused him to cancel last week's appearance, and he didn't look any worse for wear. Ax soloed in Beethoven's Piano Concert No. 5, "Emperor." It's a piece much of the orchestra has on the tip of its minds and bows, for it was on the program for the fall Florida tour. With this group, that's not likely to make a big difference, but the PSO definitely played with great aplomb as a whole. Now an elder statesman in the field, though still at the height of his powers, Ax played with the orchestra and the audience as much as with the piano. But this was a byproduct of his dramatic approach to the part. In a heartbeat, Ax skirted from stout to delicate playing, and accelerated the tempo at key thematic parts. But there was a decided cohesion to it all.

ELIZABETH LAMBERTON During the nineteenth century, before the age of electronically produced sound, there was a strong tradition of music-making in the home. The piano became something of a home entertainment center: every household had or aspired to have one, and this, together with the sheer sociability of making music together, resulted in a thriving market for piano duets. The two-piano duet has a smaller repertoire than the one-piano duet, since it was rare to find two instruments in a single room except in concert halls, colleges of music and the homes of professional musicians and composers. Musically speaking, however, two pianos offer the most varied opportunities, because each performer has the complete range of the keyboard at his disposal, and this makes possible an element of virtuosity inhibited by the comparatively cramped position of two players at one keyboard. Today's program comprises three monuments from the rarely heard duo-piano repertoire: Variations on a Theme of Haydn and the Sonata in F Minor Op. 34bis
