Pianist Emanuel Ax.
GP: What makes Chopin's music so unmistakably Polish?
EA: First of all, is his use of Polish dances. Even in the "Second Concerto" there is a mazurka in the third movement. He was the first serious Polish composer to use successfully the dance element in his writing. But beyond this, there is in his music a quality Poles call "zal." It is sort of like "soul," but is actually more a combination of melancholy, sadness, and even pity. It's [a] difficult word to translate, but a lot of people feel it sums up inherent characteristics of the Polish people. Certainly, Chopin believed this.
GP: Isn't "personal" a keyword with Chopin?
EA: Oh, yes. In that sense, he was probably the first and most original of the Romantics. In his music, he always dealt with the individual rather than the universal. The depth of his expression, however, is so great [that] it becomes universal and touches something in all of us. But basically it is about himself.
GP: But aren't there those who see Chopin more as a classicist than a Romantic?

Johannes Brahms:
Variations on a Theme by Handel
Opus 24 (1862) in Bb Major Sony, SK 48046, Digital
Studio Recording at RIAS Berlin, April 19-21, 1991

Whatever drew Brahms to Handel’s eight bars of stately, constrained melody, whose range is limited to an octave and whose notes never stray outside the eight notes of their Bb major home scale, will remain a musicological mystery! But compositionally their very “simplicity” is ideal for the incredible journey penned by the master variationist of his time.
Click to hear the Theme

Emanuel Ax seems as eager as the composer to share the wealth of ideas, sudden turns, unexpected harmonies and rhythmical drive that makes the twenty-five minute performance disappear in a heady wink.
I last heard Ax some fifteen years ago where he tossed off the fiendishly difficult Khachaturian concerto at an American Symphony Conductor (now defunct) under the direction of my mentor Kazuyoshi Akiyama. His mastery of the keyboard was dazzling but at the time he wouldn’t have been my first choice for the subtleties and breadth of another piano master. How wrong I can be!
This recording reveals a pianist who has all the tools: impeccable technique, rhythmic accuracy, Herculean endurance! - but also the all too frequently missing gift of revealing the subtext of the art. He is a worthy advocate of Brahms.

Pianist Emanuel Ax and conductor Daniel Harding join the Deutsche Kammerphil-harmonie for a concert in Bailey Hall this Tuesday, Nov. 9. The concert features Ax playing Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor, and Harding conducting the 35-person orchestra in the Lyric Suite for Orchestra by Alban Berg and Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony. Ax is known for his virtuosity, poetic temperament and the breadth of his performing activity. His distinguished career includes numerous appearances with major symphony orchestras worldwide, the commissioning and performance of new music, recitals in the most celebrated concert halls and additions to his acclaimed discography. He last appeared on the Cornell Concert Series in 1990 with violinist Yo-Yo Ma. Only 24 years old, Harding is a rising star on the international music scene who already has conducted such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This is his first season as music director of the German philharmonic orchestra. Founded in 1980, the Deutsche Kammer-philharmonie is based in Bremen, Germany, and has become a leading international chamber orchestra, appearing regularly in the major European music centers. The orchestra has also made highly successful tours of Japan, the former Soviet Union, South America and the United States, where it became the first German orchestra to perform at the Tanglewood Festival.

Emanuel Ax is renowned not only for his poetic temperament and unsurpassed virtuosity, but also for the exceptional breadth of his performing activity. Each season his distinguished career includes appearances with major symphony orchestras worldwide, recitals in the most celebrated concert halls, a variety of chamber music collaborations, the commissioning and performance of new music, and additions to his acclaimed discography on Sony Classical.
Mr. Ax captured public attention in 1974 when, at age 25, he won the First Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1975, he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists and, four years later, took the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. He has been an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist since 1987, making his debut on that label with a collection of Chopin scherzos and mazurkas. His releases over the last few years have included a Grammy-award winning album of Haydn Piano Sonatas, part of an ongoing Haydn cycle; the two Liszt concertos, paired with the Schoenberg Concerto; three solo Brahms albums, and an album of tangos by Astor Piazzolla. His newest releases, on two discs, feature Chopin's complete works for piano and orchestra, recorded on a 1851 Érard piano with the period-instrument Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Sir Charles Mackerras. A two-piano recital with Yefim Bronfman and the Brahms Piano Concertos are due for future release.

Adams came to know Slonimsky in the last decade of his long life (he died in 1995 at the age of 101) and was bowled over by the old man’s wit, wisdom and charisma. Slonimsky was born in Tsarist Russia and later acted as assistant to the legendary conductor Serge Koussevitzky. He conducted the first performance of Varèse’s Ionisation in 1933 and also premiered works by Charles Ives and Henry Cowell. His seminal book Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns is an encyclopedic reference work and has had a major impact on Adams’s harmonic thinking since the composition of his Chamber Symphony in 1992. ‘The "Slonimsky" … acknowledges my great debt to his THESAURUS … "Earbox" might be a word worthy of Slonimsky himself, a coiner who never tired of minting his own.’

Music can get us "amped up" or "mellowed out;" it can soothe, arouse, amuse, irritate, and delight us. Why? Why should mere sequences of musical sounds have such power over how we feel? And how do good musicians orchestrate that power? "Music and the Mind" includes a round table discussion on music and emotion, featuring composer and performance artist Laurie Anderson ; musicologist Dr. David Huron , Professor of Music and Director of the Cognitive and Systematic Musicology Laboratory at Ohio State University; and neuroscientist Dr. Mark Jude Tramo
