The Governor's School for the Arts is a four week residential summer school for outstanding Virginia student artists. The school is funded by the State Department of Education and tuition is free for those students selected to at tend. The director of the school is Chuck Hayes, a theater professor at Radford University; Mark Camphouse, Director of Bands at Radford, is associate director. This summer there were 123 students from throughout Virginia enrolled in programs of Music, Dance, Theater, and Visual Art. Forty five of these students were music students.
Students are selected to attend the Governor's school by a rigorous audition and interview process. Music stu dents must receive strong letters of rec ommendation from their private teachers, music instructors, and principals. They then perform an audition and undergo a personal interview.
The music curriculum of the Governor's School included two 45 minute private lessons each week, chamber music per formance and coaching, music theory and literature classes, interdisciplinary arts classes, faculty and student recitals, master classes, and special sessions on conducting, music therapy, irnprovisatory technique, and music education. This summer, internationally known concert pianist Leon Bates was in residence and gave master classes for all music students.

There was something special in the air – perhaps it was the ambience of the elegant Omni Shoreham Hotel, or the realization that a significant celebration was taking place. There were smiles everywhere, clusters of people talking animatedly, and the halls were constantly crowded with folks scurrying to yet another session, hailing acquaintances as they passed. The President’s Own – United States Marine Band and the Color Guard stirred our patriotic hearts; Roberta Guaspari inspired us with her incredible story; the Yings and Leon Bates dazzled us with stunning performances; Dave Brubeck delighted a festive Gala audience with his music and his wit; and Janice McCurnin and Joe Brye received well-deserved acclaim. Everything from the Saturday sessions, to the master classes, to the student performances, to Midnight Madness, to Bill Ivey’s speech, to the showcases, to the delightful smorgasbord of sessions seemed to delight this record-breaking crowd.
