BRESCIA MOSTRE

GRANDI EVENTI

presents Brescia, Palazzo Martinengo
May 5 - November 3 1996
A year after his death, Brescia is proud to honor the unsurpassable art of the Brescian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli , considered worldwide as the greatest "interpreter" of the twentieth century . This unique exibition "The Womb of Sound" is housed within the recently renovated rooms of Palazzo Martinengo , an architectural jewel in the heart of the historic center, overlooking the splendid Piazza del Foro, in front of the eternal splendor of the Capitolium and of the time-corroded steps of the Roman Theater, just a few meters from the Longobard suggestiveness of the Santa Giulia Monastery. Cesare Lievi, known for his dramatic and lyrical productions in the most important European theaters, has created a spectacular exibition. He goes through the artistic events of the great Benedetti Michelangeli and the same time guides the visitors throught a suggestive itinerary inside a grand piano.
The very special light and musical effects enhance the magic of this exciting trip into music, in the "womb of sound" involving the participants in a unique and unrepeatable event.

MICHELANGELI, Arturo Benedetti.
BBCL 4043 -2 (ADD) Crotchet This is a legendary performance of the Grieg. To many of us the best performance ever recorded. It is, without doubt, the version to buy. It stands skyscrapers above its nearest rivals. The magnificent fingerwork, the contrasting tone the exciting attack, the robustness of the music in the hands of this supreme king of the keyboard are quite astonishing. There are no flaws, no uncertainties just mind-boggling magic. And he makes this concerto into a very very powerful piece contradicting those performances that wallow and drag out sentimentality in nauseating pastel shades. The orchestra are in fine form. There are some absolutely shattering moments. It is a performance that when you listen to it in the privacy of your home you are so elated you have to stand up cheer and applaud. And, quite frankly, if your neighbours think you are crazy, let them.

ARTURO BENEDETTI MICHELANGELI (1920-1995)
“Music is a right, but only for those who merit it!"
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli AN ARTIST OF GENIUS, INIMITABLE AND UNCLASSIFIABLE Throughout his life this inimitable and unclassifiable pianist of genius remained faithful to his very high conception of Music. Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, who cultivated perfectionism pushed to the extreme, will most certainly be remembered as the incarnation of intellectual honesty. The career of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, a real artist in the noblest sense of this word, appears as an extraordinary musical adventure, which was also unique since not subject to the commercial constraints of the consumer society. His technical virtuosity was stupendous, but his technique always took second place to a deeper requirement, that of Music. His listeners were carried into: a world of poetry, colors and unimaginable hues where, nonetheless, passion was always under control. Only his imagination was given free rein - he paid no heed to traditional interpretations or historical context. His vision was only guided by his own sensibility. Few pianists have provoked as much veneration as Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, undeniably a legendary figure among 20th century pianists: his unrivalled "crystalline perfection", his almost mythical aura... The great Italian pianist obviously possessed that rare and true charisma which could subjugate the public.

Biography «Two phenomenal hands!». This is the way in which the famous pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli described Suzanne Husson, who is considered by international critics to be one of the foremost pianist today. She was born in Buenos Aires, to French parents and now lives in Geneva. Suzanne Husson began her musical studies when she was five, under the guidance of Elisabeth Westerkamp de Raco (a student of the famous professor Scaramuzza) at the Conservatory «Manuel de Falla» in the Argentinean capital. She gave her first public concert when she was 8. She moved to Europe to specialize mainly with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Louis Hiltbrand and Bruno Seidlhofer. She has won first prize at the «Argentinian Mozarteum», first prize for virtuosity with distinction at the Geneva Conservatory and a prize in the «Josef Pembaur Foundation» competition in Bern. She has also been awarded distinction at competitions in Geneva, Vercelli, Barcellona’s «Maria Canals» (best interpretation of Spanish music), Lisbon’s «Vianna da Motta» and Paris’ «Magda Tagliaferro» (special «R. Juillard» prize). She has performed on television and on radio, at important festivals, in concerts halls, at recitals and as soloist (Europe, U.S.A. and Latin America) also premiering new works.

PART VI: THE STEEL SHROUD Exploring the life of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli is like walking through the pages of an old book, its saffron-hued leaves worn with use and wisdom, its corners obscure and dusty. But a closer look reveals potent riches tucked away in the counterpoint of its chapters, paragraphs, and cadences. Turn a page here or there and some exotic new character peers out, ready to whisper explosive new intimacies which remain a private matter between author and reader. New York Times and other august journals, his passing was largely ignored. Evidently the American media felt no shame for the idolatry it fawned on the drug-induced stupor of suicidal rock stars and Hollywood icons to the exclusion of one of the most original and influential performers in the history of 20 th But CNN aside, why the cold shoulder?. Had the electronic umbilical cord that unites the world really been severed where the social and spiritual values of "serious" music, and the interest of its apologists, were concerned? And has what little interest that remains in the icons of 20 th century art-music been steam-rollered by pop-culture? Perhaps philosopher turned pop-culture critic Camille Paglia is right when she proclaims the victory of pop over the intellectually driven complexities of classical art forms. Dwelling on that issue, however, promises to go nowhere fast. After all, the world that Michelangeli left was not the one that he came into.

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli: The 1957 London Recital Works by Chopin, Debussy, Schumann and Mompou Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, piano (Testament SBT 2088) (2 CDs) The late Italian legend Michelangeli had made so few recordings. And he wasn't often heard 'live' either, since he almost always cancelled at the last minute. But despite that, no one is likely to forget this man, whose masterly pianism is as formidable as his full name. This new reissue on Testament is something to cherish for the ages. Recorded just before the famous Rachmaninov and Ravel studio sessions (which Lawrence Poon reviewed here with much enthusiasm early last year), this 'live' recital at the Royal Festival Hall in London is equally, if not more, stunning. My favourites were the selections from Debussy's Images . If anything, he sounds even more spontaneous, sensitive and involved here when compared to his later recordings with DG, where technically flawless accounts were somewhat marred by an apparent aloofness and sense of routine. These are atmospheric performances that emerge as beautifully mystical and mysterious as the man himself. The mobility of the Chopin items was also much appreciated. The great Ballade No.1 has real finesse and control, with genuine poetry and an awesome vision. The posthumous E-flat major Waltz has a fluidity missing even from the most famous rival versions. And Michelangeli plunges the depths of emotions more thoroughly than almost any other pianist in the Fantasie in F Minor, Op.49.

One of the complete novelties of Debussy's music was that it rejected the thick textures of German music, turning towards the South and the Mediterranean for inspiration. Available on the EMI budget series "La Voix de son Maître", this album contains Debussy's three orchestral masterpieces: Nocturnes . 2 CDs Deutsche Grammophon 449438-2 Several months after the death of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920 - 1995), Deutsche Grammophon reissued on two compact discs what originally had been released on three separate full price CDs. This new edition is thus excellent value for money. Rather than limiting these works to their French idiom, the ingenious Italian pianist glorifies their universal import. Michelangeli was the only pianist to dare to emphasize the occasionally monumental structure of this music. Worse still, to put his finger precisely on what Debussy owed to Wagner.
