  • So a composite video such as this one is for me a veritable treasure trove, a true legacy of a large proportion of the great piano playing of the 20 th th . The video available for purchase is narrated by John Tusa, but the same program as seen on PBS several months ago was narrated by John Rubinstein, son of Arthur. I was told by the producers that since the film involved many studios from many countries, the video exists with various narrations in different languages. The small booklet enclosed with the video has a text that follows to a large extent the line of the film; it has been translated into English from an article in French.
There are also commentaries by a number of pianists, conductors and managers, including Piotr Anderszewski, Daniel Barenboim, and Colin Davis. Some of these are enormously sympathetic, such as Anderszewski, or very insightful, such as Daniel Barenboim, who describes each artist in a particularly characteristic way. Cortot, for example, he describes as follows: "I think Cortot looked for the opium in music. He looked for anything that was extraordinary; he always looked for something, not sickly, but something abnormal, totally removed from reality, and far from anything that could be construed as smelling of normality."

Award: Diapason d'Or, France "One of the finest concerto records ever made. Marvellous piano playing... this disc will give you enormous delight" Gramophone One of the great achievements of the gramophone, this disc features the remarkable Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in 'classic' recordings of Ravel's G major and Rachmaninov's Fourth Concertos, made at Abbey Road Studios in 1957. Accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra at the peak of its powers, and most sympathetically conducted by Ettore Gracis, Michelangeli's supreme artistry has assured that, even now, over forty years later, these performances have not been surpassed.

Interview with Nikolai Lugansky Questions and answers published by Fnac.com on 22 March 2002
Translated from the original French by Valour Nikolai Lugansky loves Chopin and proves it. After the Etudes he turns to the cycle of Preludes and pulls off a revolutionary interpretation. This ingenious pianist moves confidently within the court of the greats. So often misused, the term "genius" once again finds its full meaning with Nikolai Lugansky. The pianist is young but has an astounding maturity, approaching music from within, never imposing upon it with his technique, however phenomenal. This pupil of the prestigious Tatiana Nikolaeva attains, with his interpretation of the Preludes of Chopin - a difficult cycle which few pianists would touch - an astonishing level of musical intelligence. Explanations are given in this interview with Nikolai Lugansky. Fnac.com : This is your second recording of Chopin for Erato. What is your bond with this composer ? NL : There are very few compositions written for piano which are as ingenious. It's the dream of a pianist. Chopin is number one for the piano, along with Rachmaninov. There is also Schumann, but he did not reach the perfection of Chopin. But Chopin is difficult - each note is very precious - especially the cycle of Preludes which represents the most difficult of Chopin's music ...

    Creating record-setting record set
By Verena Dobnik, Associated Press writer
NEW YORK With the world hurtling toward mega-everything, even the once reserved arena of classical music is pulling out all its stops.
Philips Music Group has produced the largest recording project in the history of the industry: a 200-compact disc collection of the finest pianists of this century, playing at their best.
Philips is presenting the piano series to the Guinness Book as a new record, beating the company's issue of 180 CDs of all Mozart ever wrote, as registered in the 1998 edition of Guinness.
But quantity was not a factor in how the works were chosen by Philips' director of repertoire, Tom Deacon, for "Great Pianists of the 20th Century."
"I tried to include recordings that changed how we thought about the music each pianist was playing," said Deacon in an interview from Amsterdam, where he's based.
For example, Vladimir Horowitz recorded Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in the 1940s with conductor Arturo Toscanini.
"Horowitz played it hell-bent for leather, with tremendous gusto," said Deacon. "For a whole generation, his version, his reading, changed the way in which people thought about that piece of music."

    UNMISTAKABLY MORAVEC
    Boston Globe, 08/08/1991
By Richard Dyer, Globe Staff ENOX Thirty years ago Ivan Moravec was publicized as a "mystery pianist." A famous advertisement featured a man seated at the piano, photographed in shadow so that you couldn't make out who he was, though the copy asked the provocative question, "Is this man the world's greatest pianist?" A later advertisement announced the first recordings by Ivan Moravec , a Czech pianist born in 1930; he was to make his American debut with the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of George Szell in 1964. Since then Moravec has been a regular visitor to America and the musical capitals of Europe, although his Boston appearances have been infrequent and irregular. Only last weekend did he make his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; this evening he plays a solo recital of music by Beethoven and Debussy in the Theater-Concert Hall at Tanglewood. Over the years Moravec's first recordings for the now-defunct Connoisseur Society label have built him a substantial cult following. At the time they were issued they were the most glamorous-sounding piano records that had ever been made, and they still sound pretty spectacular today. In fact they sounded so good that they may have set

Second Piano Concerto , which is among the most difficult technical challenges in the standard repertory and which he will perform with the Peabody Symphony, guest conducted by Leon Fleisher, in Friedberg Hall on March 1.
At the Moscow Conservatory, where Shtarkman studied between 1985 and 1993, students imbibed traditions with the air they breathed.
Etudes and Mazurkas . When he plays the E-flat Minor Etude (Opus 10, No. 6) or A Minor Mazurka (Opus 17, No. 4) , he can almost make a listener believe that Chopin has come back to life. Last October, the Moscow Conservatory celebrated his 75th birthday by showcasing him in several solo concerts.
One of his earliest memories is of going with his father to hear Emil Gilels give a recital at the Moscow Conservatory and being taken backstage to meet the great pianist.
    Petrouchka
Shtarkman admired Gilels for the power and beauty of his sound and for the poetic depth of his playing. He admired Sviatoslav Richter for his all-encompassing intellect, his understanding of musical form, and for his imagination, which threw off dazzling ideas as if it was an exploding supernova.

    Michelangeli, Arturo Benedetti (1900 - 1990)
There is a lot of mystery surrounding Michelangeli. He didn't perform many concerts, and when he did he often canceled half of them. When you went to the concert hall, you never knew if he was going to play or not. And you didn't always know what he was going to play either. There could be last minute changes.
He had two students, both of whom are brilliant pianists today. One was Martha Argerich, the other was Maurizio Pollini. Argerich seems to have learned Michelangeli's eccentricities, because she pulls similar stunts. However, her fingers aren't as well-placed as Michelangeli's are, and she is sloppy. This doesn't mean she's not a great interpreter, but she doesn't really do it for me, and the mistakes can be quite distracting at times.
Pollini on the other hand has the same impeccable technical ability that Michelangeli had. Plus, Pollini performs more concerts than perhaps any other pianist today, shows up for all of them, and has an incredibly diverse repertoire, championing modern music as much as any other period. However, he seems to lack the gentle quality that Michelangeli seems to have. Michelangeli combines supreme technical brilliance with a very sensitive interpretive ability that makes his playing absolutely magical. The only living pianist that matches this level of genius is Krystian Zimerman.

"Artur, you will never be a pianist. You are a musician." These prophetic words were uttered by the legendary early 20th century teacher, Theodor Leschetizky, to his young student, Artur Schnabel. "In later years, Schnabel took special delight in repeating Leschetizky's prophecy as a paradox, because he himself could never make any distinction between pianist and musician, even for his pupils. And, in his own case, the musician and the pianist were completely fused - though the pianist remained always the servant of the musician."*
