" Great pianists of the 20th century " is de bewust gekozen titel voor het grootste cd-project van de laatste jaren.
In oktober 2000 is deze serie opgenomen in de collectie van de Openbare bibliotheek Oss.
De serie heet niet " The great pianists of the 20th century"of "Great est pianists of the 20th century" of " The great es t pianists of the 20th century" maar de titel is bewust "Great pianists of the 20th century. Proef de verschillen. Daarmee geeft samensteller Tom Deacon aan dat het een keuze is. Er hadden ook andere pianisten in de serie kunnen zitten maar hij volstaat met deze pianisten. Het merendeel van de voorspelbare kritiek richt zich daar dan ook op. Maar elke keus is dubieus en elke criticus wil in zijn stukje aangeven dat hij niet van de straat is door andere namen te noemen.

http://www.eroica.com/vav-artist.html
Pianist Valarie Alexandra Valois has played all over the world, to critical and public acclaim throughout her career. Deck the Halls is her first CD in a series scheduled for international distribution via Eroica Classical Recordings. Here are some responses to her work: "Absolutely unforgettable! - In a class by herself..." from the great cellist and conductor Maestro Mstislav Rostropovich . International music critic, writer, concert pianist and recording artist, John Bell Young wrote of Valois, "She allows the music to move in on the listener... in a musical experience... that is an oasis of devastating emotional honesty. She demonstrates a command of the instrument that is astonishing." Legendary Italian pianist Maestro Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli , her teacher and mentor, said of her: "This exuberant and exquisite creature possesses a profoundly deep and exulted spirit... She is an eagle among pigeons - and she is simply the best." Applause and high praise - lovely as they are - do not make this artist as happy as knowing she has nourished the hearts and souls of her listeners. She invites everyone to share in the celebration of this music, and hopes that all will be blessed, healed and inspired in this holiday season - and all year long. The Music Contact Info

(How that hovers-as if not of the earth!)
-Franz Liszt PART I LE GIBET WATCH Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, who was 75 when he died of heart failure in Lugano on June 12, 1995, made an impression on audiences akin to that of Rasputin on the Empress Alexandra. With the smoldering demeanor of an archimandrite, he radiated importance. His command of the stage, no less impressive than his command of his instrument, proffered a figure larger than life; enigmatic and austere, Michelangeli suggested something greater than the sum of his parts. A Michelangeli recital was more than a concert; it was a religious experience. Walking briskly on stage to a waiting Steinway, his gait was swift but certain. A certain economy of gesture signaled an immense authority before a note was played. As the audience held its breath, he cultivated quiescence, and thus amplified the opening hush. Without so much as a twitch, he resembled a tiger ready to pounce. With his craggy face and pristinely trimmed mustache, Michelangeli cut an urbane, swarthy figure. Offstage he was a heavy smoker, and favored the pungent tobaccos of Turkish cigarettes or Russian papirosi, which drooped languidly from one corner of his mouth. In his later years he abandoned the slicked-back hair so popular among young, post-war bon-vivants in favor of a natural style that lightly dusted his ever-present houndstooth blazer and black pullover. This was his uniform; he was convinced that their collective enclosure protected him "against cold and warm".

ONE OF A KIND
After a stunningly unique program, it took four encores to convince the crowd that it was time to call it a night. KEN WINTERS
Special to The Globe and Mail

Toronto At Jane Mallet Theatre in Toronto, on Tuesday It would be possible and a kind of shortcut to describe the phenomenal recital of the 49-year-old Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov, Tuesday night at the Jane Mallett Theatre, by invoking the names of some half-dozen other pianists. One could draw comparisons between individual qualities in Sokolov's playing and the delicacy of Gieseking; the technical prowess (and that throaty roar in the bass) of Horowitz; the intellectual acuity and inspired wilfulness of Gould; the inner authority of Richter; the lyrical musicality of Gilels; or the vast rhythmic appetite of Bachauer. But in the end this wouldn't do, because it would suggest something compartmentalized and even fragmented in what is a very big and wide-ranging, but extraordinarily centred, communicative ability. Sokolov, at different moments, does bring to mind all those famous players of the past, but he is not a reincarnation of any of them because he is so very much himself.

La Scena vous dresse le portrait de quelques-uns de ces monuments. ARTUR SCHNABEL (1882-1951) : au service de la musique urtext ARTHUR RUBINSTEIN (1886-1982) : for the love of Chopin Arthur Rubinstein loved people, life and the piano. He started on the instrument when he was 3, made his debut at 7, started touring in his teens then discovered girls, wines, cigars and the good life. WALTER WILHEM GIESEKING (1895-1956) : pianiste raffiné VLADIMIR HOROWITZ (1903-1989) : Mr. Pyrotechnic One of the greatest pianists of all time, Vladimir Horowitz began to study piano with his mother when he was 6, and by 17, he was performing extensively. The year he turned 21, he gave 70 concerts to capacity audiences, not repeating a single piece once! A legend in his own time, the feeling of electricity in the air whenever he performed, Horowitz’s impact on American pianists was huge. His audiences were always packed with pianists trying to figure out how he was able to achieve such a phenomenal virtuosity. He explained it himself, "I must tell you I take terrible risks. Because my playing is very clear, when I make a mistake you hear it. If you want me to play only the notes without any specific dynamics, I will never make a mistake. Never be afraid to dare." Horowitz, though, was more than a stuntman; bravura and fireworks were kept for the last piece on the program, rocking the house. In lyrical pieces, his singing tone stayed wonderfully unaffected and touching. He thoroughly mastered Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Scriabin, Barber and Kabalevsky.
