Danish Operas and Symphony Orchestras The Earliest Times The earliest evidence of musical activities in Denmark are the large, twisting bronze horns dating from the Bronze Age. Soon after the first examples (three pairs) were found in a bog in 1797, the name lur was attached to them. 61 lurs have been found (the most recent in 1988) in southern Scandinavia and the Baltic area, most of them in Denmark (38). They tend to be found in pairs, but it is uncertain what they were used for. The same applies to the two golden horns found in Gallehus, which some people have interpreted as musical instruments. After the murder of St Canute in 1086, English monks were brought to Denmark by his brother, King Erik the Kind-Hearted, to venerate his memory. The music composed to celebrate this first Danish martyr has been lost; on the other hand the liturgy for his nephew Knud Lavard (1170) has survived.

Når jeg begynder et værk, spørger jeg: Hvordan kan jeg gøre det så stort, så kraftigt, så 'meget' som overhovedet muligt. Det kan ikke blive for meget. Det skyldes, at jeg har så forbandet svært ved at tage det følsomme alvorligt. Det er muligvis, fordi jeg kommer fra midtjylland, hvor man ikke gør sådan noget. Det ligger ikke til mig.« Niels Marthinsen (f. 1963) er en særegen kunstnerpersonlighed i det danske musikmiljø. Hans måde at være til på og hans sprælske musik opleves lidt som en krydsning mellem Niels Viggo Bentzon og Poul Ruders. Ikke noget med at fylde komponistrollen ud med intellektuelle spidsfindigheder og romantisk kunstneridealer. Marthinsen 'føler' ikke en masse, som så skal skrives ned. Han opfatter sig selv som en arbejdsmand, et helt almindeligt menneske, som har det job at skrive musik.
