Although a generation or so apart, both became famous not only for their music, but for the trials and tribulations of being original, creative minds under a totalitarian regime which revered or reviled them as the need arose. In spite of these hardships, both men have left a permanent mark on the musical world, and we are all the richer for their determination. The Vermeer Quartet and pianist Boris Berman give us tour de force performances of chamber music considered to be high points in the output of each composer. Shostakovich’s piano quintet from 1940, was a turning point for the composer, whose sixth symphony had been met with a less than stellar reception the year before. Written for the Beethoven Quartet and Shostakovich himself, it was programmed often until ill health forced the composer/pianist to drastically curtail his performing career. Cast in five movements, this is a beautiful, lyrical work, full of melodic invention and finesse. Although it is not short on technical challenges, this music was not designed as a show of virtuosity. If one had to describe the piece in a single word, perhaps thoughtful would be the best choice.

Master leaves one wanting more
By Clive O'Connell June 11 2002 BORIS BERMAN, Australian National Academy of Music, June 9; LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS, Melbourne Town Hall, June 9 Boris Berman, head of the Piano Department at Yale School of Music, gave only one recital in Melbourne - as do all too many of the guest teachers at the National Academy of Music. After hearing his Chopin interpretation, you were left envying music-lovers in West Australia, Tasmania and Queensland who will hear the Russian-American musician in concerto performances. Berman's approach to the most elegant and dangerous of Romantic piano composers is directed towards spaciousness. For once, the large Town Hall of the academy's recitals found an artist whose output was dynamically and timbrally lavish enough to sound comfortable, filling out the large room with ease. Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 5,
10 Pieces from Romeo and Juliet
Four Pieces, and Scherzo and March from "The Love of Three Oranges"
Recommended recording: Boris Berman (Chandos CHAN 8851) Boris Berman's first installment in his ongoing Prokofiev Piano music cycle on Chandos serves as a good sign of what to expect from this very interesting pianist. His technique is formidable, but never ever used for mere display - virtuosity is always at the service of the music. Prokofiev's 5 th sonata is different from the other three written immediately after it: it is a more serene piece that wins by its charm rather than by virtuoso keyboard writing. Berman's interpretation is absolutely beyond reproach. It makes a winning coupling for the equally delightful selection from Prokofiev's most famous ballet score, Romeo and Juliet . Berman puts it through with thoughtful characterization and commands a wide palette of keyboard colours, so much so that one doesn't quite miss the orchestra. The Four Pieces and the two famous extracts from Prokofiev's comic opera The Love of Three Oranges make excellent encores, rounding off a promising recital disc that should find a place on the shelves of all Prokofiev admirers.

69. Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.5
those wanting excellent digital sound, boris berman and Neeme berman's techniqueis reminiscent of the easyvirtuosity merely as a showpiece for the pianist.

Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 5
Recommended recordings: Sviatoslav Richter / Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra / Witold Rowicki (DG 415 119 - 2)
Richter's classic account on DG needs no introduction. Arguably the most fun concerto by Prokofiev, the musicians here sound like they are having a great time. The Warsaw orchestra gives adequate orchestral backup. Above-average analogue sound, and this is coupled with a highly-passionate Rachmaninov Second Piano Concerto. First and Fourth (Left Hand) Concertos. To return to list of piano concertos

Comparing her earlier recordings with this shows that her tempos have varied little over the years, with only a few exceptions... was born to a family of musicians. He began studying music at the age of five and was educated at Moscow's Gnessin School of Music; being awarded a medal of merit at his graduation. He continued to improve his mastery until attaining a doctorate with outstanding results at Moscow's Tchaikowsky Conservatoire, studying under the famous Maestro J. Milstein. In 1970, having won first prize in the Soviet Pianists' Competition, he began giving concerts both as a soloist and in duo with the violinist, Vladimir Spivakov. Boris Bekhterev has played at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the Soviet Union, in Europe (Vienna's Konzerthaus, The Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome), La Scala Theatre in Milan), in the United States (New York's Carnegie Hall), in Japan and other nations. He boasts a very wide repertoire, which extends from the baroque style of Bach and Scarlatti, through Classicism and Romanticism, touching on French Impressionist culture, and arriving at the modern and contemporary composers. A large part of his repertoire consists of works by Russian composers. He has played with many orchestras in the Soviet Union and with chamber orchestras such as the Virtuosi of Moscow, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Budapest and the Prague Chamber Orchestra. From 1972 to 1986 he taught at the Moscow Conservatoire. During that time, he also ran the Academie Internationale of Tours (France) advanced courses for four years.

No collection of Sir Malcolm Arnold's music for band is going to avoid at least some duplication of material already on other discsnot only because a number of his most popular orchestral works have been transcribed by others for the symphonic band medium but also because the actual amount of such original material is relatively small. Suffice it to say right up front, however, that this survey is as fine and comprehensive and stupendously well-executed a sampling as anyone could ever ask for. Our nation's current premiere symphonic wind ensemble, under its permanent conductor Jerry Junkin, covers itself in glory once againas does the utterly and startlingly lifelike Reference High Definition Compatible Digital Processwith this release, which includes several recording premieres: the Overseas and H.R.H.
