As a composer his greatest success was the musical West Side Story, a modern American version of Romeo and Juliet. Leonard Bernstein Works MIDI FILE - from "Candide": Overture He wrote three symphonies: his second symphony, The Age of Anxiety, is based on the work of the English poet W.H. Auden. The Jeremiah Symphony of 1942, with its mezzo-soprano solo, represents a religious vein in Bernstein's music. MIDI FILE - from Symphony No.2: 5th Mov. Bernstein, Leonard (1918-1990)
Introduction
Bernstein was not only one of the great conductor, he was also a brilliant musician all around: pianist and composer - for film, stage, and concert hall. His music takes Aaron Copland's jazzy rhythms a step further. (Where Copland is sunnier, Bernstein is fiercer.)
Works
Candide overture; Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; Symphonic Suite from On The Waterfront; Fancy Free ballet: Here is one disc that contains what I consider to be the highlights of Bernstein's music. Here you have the concert hall versions of his music for broadway, film, and ballet. The New York Philharmonic are at the peak of their powers, and so is Bernstein in his conducting. This is an incredible value.

Leonard Bernstein Remembrance
11 November 1990 As you all must know by now (unless your only reading material consists of Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Weekly ), Leonard Bernstein died October 14th. The following is a little remembrance I wrote up that evening and posted on some local bulletin boards: Just heard the sad news that Leonard Bernstein died today, aged 72. It was not unexpected, as he'd been in failing health for some time, and had been hospitalized a couple of months ago with a lung tumor and emphysema. Bernstein was a lot of things. He was a conductor, probably the best-known one to the American public. He was a composer, both of "serious" works and of musicals and those musicals include "Wonderful Town" and "West Side Story." (For the latter one, he set words by Stephen Sondheim, in case you'd forgotten!) He was also a pianist of great ability; when Aaron Copland was going to have his piano sonata premiered, and the pianist who was to have played it got sick, Bernstein learned the score, memorized it, and played the premiere in 24 hours! Bernstein was also a prolific writer on music and related subjects; his writings fill up a few books, including

Munich - The famous pianist Wilhelm Kempff has died at the age of 95 in Positano, Italy. The city government announced the death of the piano virtuoso on Friday, May 24, 1991. Kempff still performed at the age of 80 with his friend Leonard Bernstein in New York City. The friendship between the two has developed after the Second World War. Bernstein praised the German: "He is one of the most interesting personalities I ever met in my life." After 1945 Kempff lived in Ammerland near Munich. His adopted home became the Italian town Positano near Naples, where he suffered a stroke. Kempff was a pianist with an unmistakable, unique touch. His interpretations of piano works of the classic and romantic styles were always stamped with a highly personal style. With the pianist Cortot, also Kempff played at the opening of a great art exhibition of his friend Arno Breker in the Orangerie in Paris in 1942 in front of an international audience. Kempff is immortalized in a magnificent bronze bust by Breker. Kempff grew up in Potsdam, studied music in Berlin and received there a thorough education as a pianist. Already in the 20's he began with an extensive touring activity which took him around the world. He performed in Japan as well as in South America and in the United States. To his friends belonged Eugen d'Albert, Georg Kulenkampff, Edwin Fischer and the legendary pianistin Elly Ney. Together with Roger Peyrefitte, Ernst Fuchs, Ronald Reagan, Dr. Uta Ranke-Heinemann, Salvador Dali and other personalities, also Kempff belonged to the Order of Alexander the Great for Science and Art.

In 19th November the same year he made front page headlines by replacing Bruno Walter in a national radio broadcast still at the tender age of 25. Leonard Bernstein Componisten
