New York Philharmonic broadcast Leonard Bernstein debut "Bruno Walter, who was to have conducted this afternoon, is ill, and his place will be taken by the young American-born assistant conductor of the Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein." (Carnegie Hall, New York City, November 14, 1943) Leonard Bernstein was called the "Renaissance man of music" for his excellence as a conductor, a composer, a concert pianist, and a teacher who brought classical music to the masses. After studying conducting with Fritz Reiner and Serge Koussevitzky, he was hired as an assistant conductor for the New York Philharmonic in 1943. In the history of the orchestra, no assistant had been called on to conduct, but on November 14 fate smiled on Bernstein when guest conductor Bruno Walter fell ill. The night before, Bernstein had heard a singer perform one of his compositions and then, in typical Bernstein fashion, had stayed up late drinking and playing piano at the post-recital party. With three hours of sleep, a hangover, and no rehearsal, Bernstein was asked to conduct a complex program of Schumann, Strauss, Rosza, and Wagner that was going to be broadcast from Carnegie Hall across the nation by CBS radio. The concert was a sensational success, and

News report Death of Leonard Bernstein "He was the American maestro." (October 15, 1990) Leonard Bernstein, a towering presence in American music, died of a smoking-related heart attack on October 14, 1990. Just five days earlier, he had announced that he would retire from performing because of health problems. He was 72. Bernstein was called the "Renaissance man of music" for his excellence as a conductor, composer, concert pianist, and teacher who brought classical music to the masses. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Russian-Jewish immigrants in 1918, Bernstein studied piano and composition at Harvard. The American composer Aaron Copland and others encouraged him to become a conductor after observing Bernstein's intuitive grasp of classical music and unusual ability to play complex orchestral scores on the piano. Bernstein's big break came in 1943, when as an assistant conductor for the New York Philharmonic he was asked at the last minute to fill in for an ill Bruno Walter. The concert was a sensational success, and The New York Times published a front-page article the next day announcing the arrival of a great new conducting talent. For the rest of his life, Bernstein was an internationally sought-after conductor. He had an animated and flamboyant style, and on more than one occasion he actually fell off his conducting podium in his enthusiasm. Refusing to restrict himself to conducting, he composed acclaimed symphonies, operas, and scores for ballets. He was also deeply interested in American popular music, and jazz influences can be found in many of his classical pieces. His best-known works were for Broadway, and in the groundbreaking musical

Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein (August 18, 1918 - October 14, 1990) was an American composer and orchestra conductor. Bernstein was born in Lawrence, MA on August 18, 1918 and died in 1990. Bernstein was highly regarded as a director, composer, pianist, and educator. He is probably best known to the public as long time music director the New York City Symphony; for conducting concerts by many of the world's leading orchestras; and for writing the music for the musical Westside Story. All told he wrote three symphonies, two operas, five musicals, and numerous other pieces. Bernstein's politics were decidedly left wing, but unlike some of his contemporaries, he was not blacklisted in the 1950s. Bernstein married actress and author Felicia Montealegre in 1951. The couple had three children. [Adapted from Wikipedia

Leonard Bernstein: Eclecticism and Vernacular Elements in Chichester Psalms
By Paul Laird, University of Kansas
As a master's student in 1982, I interviewed Leonard Bernstein at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. The following excerpt is from that interview:
LAIRD: You've said yourself that your music is eclectic.
BERNSTEIN: With a certain amount of pride, I think.
LAIRD: Would you consider Copland your greatest influence?
BERNSTEIN: I think Copland is eclectic, very. Because he was strongly influence by, for example, Stravinsky, who was the most eclectic coposer that ever lived himself. . . . If you go into anybody, including Bach, Beethoven, you can make out a case for eclecticism. The greater the composer, the better case you can make out for his eclecticism. This combination of Haydn, Mozart, and Bach, and everything else that goes into making up Beethoven, plus the magic factor which is the individual thing we call Beethoven, that voice, that personal sound. But you can reduce almost any bar of Beethoven to some previous composer, if you want to. Now what can be more eclectic than that? And you can with Stravinsky. I don't care how original. You should set yourself an assignment sometime. Take Le Sacre du printemps , which is supposed to be the work that revolutionized music, and changed the world, and just analyze it page by page, bar by bar. You'll find that every bar of it comes form somwhere else. But it has just been touched by this magic guy. You'll find roots in Rimsky-Korsakov, and you'll find sources from Scriabin. . . . note-for-note sources like in the sacrificial dance at the end, which is supposed to be the most original thing of all, righ? (He sings from the "Danse Sacral.") It's from Scriabin's Fifth Piano Sonata. I can show it to you bar by bar. I can show you Balakirev. I can show you the whole thing.

A Legendary 20th Century Composer: Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) is one of the most significant art-music composers of the twentieth century. He was a "composer, conductor, educator, pianist, and television personality" (The Enjoyment of Music, p. 588). He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and his parents were Russian Jewish immigrants. Bernstein's intelligence and musical potential was clear at a very early age: he played the piano and was apart of a jazz band when he was thirteen. "He took piano lessons as a boy and attended the Garrison and Boston Latin Schools. At Harvard University, he studied with Walter Piston, Edward Burlingame-Hill, and A. Tillman Merritt, among others" (Biography: Leonard Bernstein ). At the age of twenty two, Bernstein studied at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer institute, Tanglewood. The orchestra's conductor was Serge Koussevitzky, and Bernstein later became his conducting assistant. This laid the foundation for a very promising future for Bernstein, as he was the youngest American-born composer to become director of the New York Philharmonic at the age of forty. Bernstein is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century for two major reasons. First, he was multi-talented in various aspects of music. He was a composer of a large body of work ranging from symphonies, to opera, to most significantly, musical theater. Some of Bernstein's major symphonic compositions are "'Prelude, Fugue and Riffs' for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble (1949); 'Serenade' for violin, strings and percussion, (1954); 'Symphonic Dances from West Side Story,' (1960); 'Chichester Psalms' for chorus, boy soprano and orchestra (1965) and 'Mass: A Theater Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers,' commissioned for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC" (Biography:
