Return to Great Composers
Return to Grand Catalog Page For some ten years Chopin enjoyed a liaison with the writer George Sand, but broke with her during the last years of his life, brought to a close by the tuberculosis from which he had long suffered. His compositions, principally for the piano, make a remarkable use of the newly developed instrument, exploring its poetic possibilities while generally avoiding the more obvious ostentation of the Paris school of performers.

Brahms, Johannes (1833 - 1897)
Return to Great Composers Return to Naxos Catalog Page
Born in Hamburg, the son of a double-bass player and his older seamstress wife, Brahms attracted the attention of Schumann, to whom he was introduced by the violinist Joachim, and after Schumann's death he maintained a long friendship with his widow, the pianist Clara Schumann, whose advice he always valued. Brahms eventually settled in Vienna, where to some he seemed the awaited successor to Beethoven. His blend of classicism in form with a romantic harmonic idiom made him the champion of those opposed to the musical innovations of Wagner and Liszt. In Vienna he came to occupy a position similar to that once held by Beethoven, his gruff idiosyncrasies tolerated by those who valued his genius.

[70'17"] budget-price by Ong Yong Hui The Waltzes by Chopin are not a very prominent series of pieces to listeners, and there are much fewer recordings of them than the famous Etudes or Nocturnes . There was the time when etudes ("studies") were simply finger exercises for the pianists or at most dazzling fireworks for the piano-bashing virtuosos like Liszt, as with his Transcendental Etudes . However, Chopin's poetic musical style gives his own Etudes an intimate touch that affected them, imbuing them with much more musical value. Similarly, his Waltzes, composed during the waltz craze in the late eighteenth century, transformed the dance music into something more delicate and gentle in accordance to his music style. "Look at these trees!" Liszt said, "The wind plays in the leaves, stirs up life among them, the tree remains the same, that is chopinesque rubato'. Liszt's illustration of Chopin's famed rubato touch coincides with the idea of the waltz form, where the bass have to play a steady beat to retain the rhythmic dance form while the "melodic lines should enjoy freedom of expression with fluctuations of speed". This clinical statement nevertheless proves to be true. The Waltzes express a wide gamut of ideas that ranges from boisterous dance movements to lyrical and smooth-flowing music. Yet with such a disparity, underlying these pieces is a strict waltz tempo and a concentration on the beat and meter which are perhaps not found in Chopin's other works.

Amazon UK AmazonUS Idil Biret has been making quite a name for herself with her series of recordings for Naxos. Having recorded much of the solo works for piano of Brahms she now tackles the two piano concerti with these Polish forces. This is in addition to her other recordings of Chopin, Rachmaninov, and Boulez. The Polish National Radio Orchestra under Antoni Wit is a major recording orchestral partnership for Naxos with a number of highly acclaimed recordings to their name. So how do these artists combine? Technically, there are absolutely no problems at all, with the accuracy of the playing and the recording quality being of very high quality. What I find totally missing is the massiveness and thrill of the power of the Brahms D Minor. We can hear this quite clearly on competitive versions such as Gilels / BPO / Jochum, Katchen / LSO / Monteux, to name two budget discs currently on offer at only slightly higher prices. Admittedly, both of these are older recordings and suffer accordingly, but both are of such a high quality that the difference is only marginal. The gains in performance however, are enormous.

Amazon UK Amazon USA Originally released as part of a twelve CD-boxed set which included Brahms' complete solo piano works, the two piano concertos and various works by Schumann and Schubert (Naxos 8.501201), Beret's version of the Brahms Second has now been allowed to breathe as a single issue. In a field as crowded as this, any new entrant should bring something special to this evergreen music (a price tag of a fiver does not qualify). There are so many better - Gilels/Jochum or Pollini/VPO/Abbado spring immediately to mind, for example. The recording strains at any dynamic level above a healthy forte, making for periodically uncomfortable listening (especially from screeching violins), just from an engineering standpoint. The recording dates from 1996, so it would seem that Naxos have (in general) pulled their socks up, at least to just over their ankles, since then. Musically, Biret takes the first movement expansively, but lacks the nobility and the ability for long-range musical thought to be able to convince. There are some splashes in the second movement, where detail also tends to get lost in the general unfocussed sound-picture.

Julia Gorenman, Idil Biret and Ruth Laredo reveal the difficult times in their lives by Rose Eide-Altman , editor Have you heard the saying: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!"? That may be easier to do for some people than for others, but we’ve all had trying times which may have tempted us to give up our dreams and goals. This month’s editorial focuses on difficulties in the lives of three outstanding concert pianists with the wish that these amazing stories will encourage you when you feel like you have been handed more than your share of lemons. It was reading the new article last month about Maryla Jonas , and her overwhelming difficulties during and after World War II, that prompted me to share with you other stories that I have found in websites featured in "Women at the Piano". I cannot tell you how many evenings of pleasure this recording has given me. From the opening duet between horn and piano I knew I was in for a special experience. After comparisons with other recordings I now rate this as the finest I have ever heard. My references include: Richter with Leinsdorf and the Chicago Symphony on RCA (nla), Moravic with Belohlavek and the Czech Phil on Supraphon, Gilels and Joachim with the Berlin Philharmonic on DG and Barenboim with Barbirolli and the Vienna Philharmonic on EMI Forte. The orchestra is superb. The opening brings to mind Steinberg's story in his book The Concerto . "'Dream Mr. X,' I once heard a conductor say to his solo horn as they were about to begin a rehearsal of this concerto." (116) The author goes on to say that this soloist should be able to "muse".* The burnished horn player here made me think I was listening to the Vienna Philharmonic. I wish that Naxos had credited her/him as they did the solo cellist, Zdzislaw Lapinski. His (her?) playing offers other details that set this recording apart from the others. The recording is simply the best of the lot. The main thing that strikes me is the perfect balance, or relief as Stokowski called it, between the orchestra and piano. In the other recordings the orchestra is distant, in the case of the Richter and Leinsdorf it sounds like the orchestra is out in the hall. Add to that the fact that the conductor is self effacing to the point where the music is dull. The Gilels is better balanced but still misses some details in the orchestra and Joachim, while not as mundane as Leinsdorf, always impressed me as not much more than a Kapellmeister beating time. The Czech Philharmonic is one of the finest in the world, but they are so distantly recorded that it would be hard to find evidence in this recording to support that assertion. Barbirolli turns in a fine orchestral performance but Barenboim seems to lumber his way through it, pounding the piano instead of playing it.
