//Scrollfunktionen bereitstellen. var scrollText=true; One of the most innovative and adventurous conductors in the classical music world, Dennis Russell Davies, has succeeded in challenging and inspiring audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Davies has ventured into operatic, orchestral and even popular forms of music, as conductor, chamber musician and pianist, to express his eclectic and versatile musical agenda.
Since 1980, he has lived in Germany, but has maintained an active presence on the North American scene as a regular guest conductor with the major orchestras and opera houses of New York and Chicago. Davies is currently Chief Conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Chief Conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Salzburg Mozarteum and is concluding his tenure as Music Director of the American Composers Orchestra.
His diverse repertory is testimony to his commitment to the artistic growth and development of not only each organization he has led, but also the living composers with whom he has collaborated. His close personal friendships with composers like Luciano Berio, William Bolcom, John Cage, Philip Glass, Lou Harrison, Hans Werner Henze and Francis Thorne (with whom he formed the American Composers Orchestra) have been important catalyst for enriching concert and operatic repertory in general. Extensive collaborations throughout his career include ones with Laurie Anderson, Keith Jarrett, Cab Calloway and Jan Garbarek.

Soprano Valente, pianist Raim unite for 'Briefly it Enters'
By Stephanie Love
For the Daily The 118th season of the University Musical Society opens impressively with a solo recital by distinguished American soprano Benita Valente. The concert features the World Premiere of William Bolcom's Song Cycle "Briefly it Enters," based on the poems of Jane Kenyon. Originally from Ann Arbor, Kenyon lived in New Hampshire where she died of cancer in 1995. Her poems reflect an intense connection with nature, an integral part of her life. Valente has selected complementary works by Schumann, Brahms, Strauss and Wolf, also featuring nature themes for the rest of the program. Benita Valente is an internationally celebrated interpreter of chamber music, oratorio and lieder, as well as being equally acclaimed for her performances on the operatic stage. Encompassing a wide array of styles, her repertoire ranges from the Baroque of Bach and Handel to the varied idioms of today's leading composers, making her one of the most sought after orchestral soloists over the last two decades. A California native, Valente has won acclaim since winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and has participated in the prestigious Marlboro Festival in addition to collaborations with instrumental greats such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and pianists Rudolf Serkin, Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode and Cynthia Raim among others. Performing with nearly every great orchestral conductor over the past 20 years including Seiji Ozawa, Robert Shaw, Leonard Bernstein, Sergiu Comissiona and Kurt Masur, Valente has performed with every great symphony in the United States as well as many of the renowned symphonies of Canada and Europe.

Bees, now a WSU piano professor, was then a doctoral student at the University of Colorado. In the past few years Taylor has emerged as one of the nation’s foremost young musicians. Audiences and critics alike hail the intensity and artistry he brings to the works of masters ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Boulez and Bolcom. The Washington Post, for instance, deems Taylor "one of the most impressive young pianists on the horizon today." His program includes works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Olivier Messiaen and Robert Schumann. In recent seasons Taylor has performed in France, Korea, Spain, the Philippines, and the Caribbean. In the United States he has appeared with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Houston Symphony, Utah Symphony and Boston Pops, and has toured with the Polish Chamber Philharmonic.

What Is Ragtime Piano?
by Irwin Schwartz
David A. Jasen and Trebor Jay Tichenor write in their book, Rags and Ragtime , that "Ragtime is a musical composition for the piano comprising three or four sections containing sixteen measures each which combines a syncopated melody accompanied by an even, steady duple rhythm." They add that "If there is one incontestable statement which can be made about ragtime, it is that ragtime is a paradoxical art form with a perpexing history."
Like stride piano, ragtime piano has a Big Three: Scott Joplin, James Scott and Joseph Lamb. Joplin (1868 - 1917) is clearly the most well-known of the trio, having composed such timeless rags as "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag."
James Sylvester Scott (1885 - 1938) began his working career as a window washer and floor sweeper. In 1906 he published "Frogs Legs Rag," which became an instant success. Considered to be the most pianistic of the Big Three, Scott wrote thickly-textured exploratory compositions. Joseph Francis Lamb (1887 - 1960) was mentored by Scott Joplin, who helped Lamb publish his first rags. Joplin's name appears on the title page of some of Lamb's early music as the "arranger." Lamb wrote such gems as "American Beauty Rag"and "

Catalog #S022581CD [DDD] Program Notes Peter Madlem works as a studio arranger and quitarist in the Los Angeles area. His American Sketches (1974) show both his affinity for incorporating folk and blues styles into a traditional Suite and his love for the landscape and oral traditions of America. His Homage to Scarlatti carries on the Segovia tradition of creating a "new" Baroque repertoire with a slightly impressionistic flavor while Rayo traces, sonically, the path of one pure ray of light as it is reflected and bounced across the Cosmos. Spirituals are often described as the Gregorian Chant of American music. In these Four Spirituals (1976) (which are actually three spirituals and the old Shaker Hymn, Simple Gifts) Madlem interweaves the old melodies with a light counterpointe and lilting Impressionistic harmonies that form a sonic tapestry of old and new, tradition and innovation, the essence of American music. Albert Harris
Albert Harris was introduced to Andres Segovia in 1950 by his friend and neighbor Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote his Variations and Fugue on the Theme by Handel as a result of this meeting and Segovia promptly recorded it. Written in a neo-classical style, the different variations take the form of movements from a Baroque Suite and alternate between strict Baroque counterpoint and a poignant romanticism. The theme comes from one of Handel's "Aylesford" harpsichord pieces, which Segovia himself had transcribed for solo guitar. This theme is readily apparent in all variations save the fourth which is the theme played backwards and upside down. The Tremelo sixth variation was added at Segovia's request.

For Immediate Release Alaska Pro Musica to perform all-American concert at UAA The University of Alaska Anchorage’s faculty music trio, Alaska Pro Musica, (Walter Olivares, violin, Mark Wolbers, clarinet, and Timothy Smith, piano) have planned an exciting concert for all Alaskans on Sunday, January 26 at 4 p.m. in the UAA Arts Building, Room 150. The program, consisting entirely of works by American composers, includes works by Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, William Bolcom, and a work by a recent UAA Music graduate, Garth Hangartner. On the program is the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, by Leonard Bernstein; followed by two selections by George Gershwin: The Porgy and Bess Fantasy, arranged for violin and piano, and the I’ve Got Rhythm variations for two pianos (here Smith will be joined by his wife Rumi). Next is a work titled In Dark Mountain Hollows by UAA music graduate Garth Hangartner, which includes sections for prepared piano, and finally the Afternoon Cakewalk, a trio of piano rags by William Bolcom, which includes arrangements of well-known rags such as Easy Winners and Heliotrope Bouquet (Joplin), Ethiopia Rag (Joseph Lamb), Frog Legs Rag (James Scott), as well as two Bolcom originals, The Graceful Ghost and Incineratorag. The Afternoon Cakewalk was composed by Bolcom in 1979, at the request of the Murray Louis Dance Troupe. “This marks a bit of a departure from earlier more traditional trio programs”, says Smith, pianist for the trio. “We have included some traditional American favorites, such as the Gershwin works, and Leonard Bernstein’s music also has a wide appeal; but the rags definitely put a different spin on the program. The arrangements, specifically for the instrumentation of Alaska Pro Musica (piano-violin-clarinet) are proving to be excellent vehicles for music that was originally performed solely on the piano. In addition, the Hangartner work, with its dark and eerie imagery of an Alaskan winter, evokes some unusual sounds, whereby the pianist is called upon to work the piano as a real percussion instrument by plucking the strings directly, as if the piano were a harp.”

INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.
