Victor Borge was born in Copenhagen, Denmark Januar 3, 1909, the son of Bernhard and Frederikke Rosenbaum. He was named Børge Rosenbaum, and his musical talent was no surprise as his father was a musician in the Royal Danish Chapel. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music by Olivo Krause, and later by Victor Schiøler, Frederic Lamond and Egon Petri. Borge Rosenbaum was born January 3, 1909 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the son of a violinist in the Royal Danish Chapel. He began playing piano as a youngster and was trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, making his serious keyboard debut in 1926 in Copenhagen, although he had performed in concert as early as age 13. During the ‘30s, he became one of Denmark’s most popular artists, his career as a classical pianist going sideways as he enjoyed making his audiences laugh. He made his initial revue appearance in 1931 and first film in 1937. By this time, Europe was heating up as Germany moved toward war, but Borge continued as his career gained him notice as a comic actor, composer, pianist, writer and director of movies, stage shows and radio programs in Scandinavia. His rise was parallel to the rise of fascism and being a Jew in Denmark, his notoriety did not go unseen by the local Nazis, who made threats toward him. Rather than leave, he reacted by writing anti-Nazi skits, such as "What is the difference between an Nazi and a dog? A Nazi lifts his arms." Germany invaded Denmark in 1940 after the non-aggression pact they had signed earlier came apart, but Borge was in Sweden performing and managed to secure a visa from the American Consulate in Stockholm — one of the officers there was a fan of his — and made his way to Finland.
