Entertainment: Comedic pianist Victor Borge dies at 91
The Associated Press
GREENWICH, Conn. (December 25, 2000 7:09 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com ) - Victor Borge, the daffy pianist whose whimsical approach to the classics earned him the moniker the "clown prince" of Denmark, died Saturday at age 91. Borge's daughter, Rikke Borge, said her father died peacefully in his sleep at his home as the family was gathering to celebrate Christmas. He had just returned from a trip to Copenhagen, the city of his birth. For decades, Borge delighted audiences by deflating the pomposity of classical music. He fell off his bench, played music upside down and repeatedly milked laughs from such classic routines as "phonetic punctuation" in which he used goofy sounds to indicate commas, periods and question marks in his monologue. "I think he brought laughter to every person he came in contact with," Rikke Borge said Saturday. "He had a long and happy life." Borge kept up a busy career into his 80s, touring and issuing videos, including his most popular, "The Best of Victor Borge," which sold some 3 million copies. His longtime agent, Bernard Gurtman, said he had had concerts booked for the next two years.

The New Victor Borge ?
In local newspapers Conrad Askland has been billed as the "New Victor Borge" for his solo concert piano performances. "Their are similarities so I understand the comparison", says Askland. "Main differences are that my show has much more playing and the humor is not quite so slapstick. The humor in my piano concerts is based on improvisations of Classical music in various contemporary styles. Where it is similiar to Victor Borge, is where I constantly mix music history and composer facts with contemporary ideas and music. I would say that many times my pieces are a little closer to PDQ Bach." For more information on this concert pianist please see the Biography page

about feedback Top Bands and Artists ... Borge, Victor Affectionately known as the "Great Dane", Victor Borge was not only an unequaled humorist and entertainer but also a world class pianist. He was pronounced "the funniest man in the world" by the New York Times - and millions of people all over the world agreed. Victor Borge was born in Copenhagen, Denmark Januar 3, 1909, the son of Bernhard and Frederikke Rosenbaum. He was named Børge Rosenbaum, and his musical talent was no surprise as his father was a musician in the Royal Danish Chapel. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music by Olivo Krause, and later by Victor Schiøler, Frederic Lamond and Egon Petri. He had his piano debut in 1926 at "Odd Fellow Palæet" in Copenhagen and was recognized as a very talented musician. During the 1930's he became one of Denmark's most popular artists. He started his career as a classical pianist, but his talent for making the audience laugh was soon obvious, and he started developing his unique blend of humour and music. He had his revue debut in 1933 and his film debut in 1937. In 1940 he was forced to leave Denmark, and he travellled from Petsano to New York. Although he didn't speak English he soon managed to "translate" his humour, and he performed for the first time in Bing Crosby's radio show in 1941.

Classical music may not be a traditional route to pop stardom but the 88 keys under the fingers of Victor Borge were the source of a comedy career unparalleled in music.
Borge Rosenbaum was born January 3, 1909 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the son of a violinist in the Royal Danish Chapel. He began playing piano as a youngster and was trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, making his serious keyboard debut in 1926 in Copenhagen, although he had performed in concert as early as age 13. During the ‘30s, he became one of Denmark’s most popular artists, his career as a classical pianist going sideways as he enjoyed making his audiences laugh. He made his initial revue appearance in 1931 and first film in 1937.
By this time, Europe was heating up as Germany moved toward war, but Borge continued as his career gained him notice as a comic actor, composer, pianist, writer and director of movies, stage shows and radio programs in Scandinavia. His rise was parallel to the rise of fascism and being a Jew in Denmark, his notoriety did not go unseen by the local Nazis, who made threats toward him.
Rather than leave, he reacted by writing anti-Nazi skits, such as "What is the difference between an Nazi and a dog? A Nazi lifts his arms." Germany invaded Denmark in 1940 after the non-aggression pact they had signed earlier came apart, but Borge was in Sweden performing and managed to secure a visa from the American Consulate in Stockholm — one of the officers there was a fan of his — and made his way to Finland. He and wife, Elsie caught the last ship from Finland to the United States as the war heated up. He then changed his name to Victor Borge, hoping it would sound more American.

They laughed when he sat down to play Victor Borge (pronounced Bor -ga) just celebrated his 91 st Borge is, of course, far more. Unique in both classical music and comedy, Borge is a very good pianist who is also very funny. Borge was born Borge Rosenbaum on January 3, 1909, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, Bernhard Rosebaum, was a musician in the Royal Danish Chapel, and his mother introduced him to the piano when he was three. He was regarded as a prodigy and given a scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Still in his teens, he earned scholarships to study with noted pianists in Vienna and Berlin. He made his public debut on piano in 1926, gaining immediate recognition. He made his revue debut in 1933 and his film debut in 1937. As a Jew, Borge did not care for the events transpiring next door in Germany. Such barbs forced him to flee Denmark just ahead of the Nazi invasion, to give performances in Sweden which he had prudently booked. From there he went to Finland, and he escaped to the United States on the S.S. American Legion, the last American passenger ship to leave Northern Europe before World War II.

Victor Borge
(comedian and pianist; born January 3, 1909, in Copenhagen; died December 23 , 2000) "Victor Borge is world-famous as the funniest pianist on Earth," declared The Washington Post a few years ago. And he gets as many laughs at the keyboard as under it. Borge has made an art of finding excuses not to play the pianofalling off the bench, swatting imaginary flies, stopping to reprimand a late-arriving audience member, suddenly remembering a joke or anecdote. "But when Borge finally does perform," reports The Atlanta Journal and Constitution , " it's the real thing: music-making of surpassing warmth and charm." Ninety years ago, he was born Borge Rosenbaum in Copenhagen, Denmark. He started playing the piano when he was only three years old. He was hailed as a prodigy and given a scholarship to the Royal Danish Music Conservatory, making his orchestral debut as a soloist with the Copenhagen Philharmonic when he was 10. In public recitals, he was a serious musician, but at school, in clubs, and at family gatherings he played more humor than humoresque. His incredible wit combined with his musical ability established him quickly as a one-of-a-kind artist. Word got out, and by his early twenties Borge was established as one of the leading film and stage personalities of Scandinavia.

We all do what we can, we all have limitations. Apparently, within my limitations, there is enough to go on and on and on and on.''

Victor Borge (1909-2000) was a concert pianist and comedian in his home country, Denmark, when the Nazi's invaded in 1940. Borge, a Jew, abandoned all his worldly possessions and fled to the United States, where he got a job in 1941 doing the warmup for the Rudy Vallee radio show. Carroll Carroll, chief writer for Bing Crosby, heard Borge's warmup in Dec. 1941. Borge's act involved reading a story, including each punctuation mark, to which he assigned a sound. Carroll had Borge booked for the very next Kraft Music Hall. Carroll finishes the story: "Victor was scheduled to go on after the station break. That meant there'd be a song by Bing, the Victor Borge spot, a commercial, a song by Bing, another guest spot, a song by Bing, a commercial, theme, sign-off. "I shortened the other guest shot because I knew Victor needed time. We took a chorus out of one of Bing's songs. Victor agreed that he could do the spot in 12 minutes. That is, we thought he agreed. He spoke almost no English and only understood, if anything, what he chose to. Bing's intro said he'd seen Victor Borge warming up an audience for Rudy Vallee and anybody who's good enough to warm up a Vallee audience has got to be good enough to heat up an audience in the old Kraft Music Hall. "Victor came on and repeated the punctuation routine and got the same earthquakelike reaction. After 12 minutes he was still going. We lost a commercial. He kept right on going. We lost a Crosby song. Then we lost a guest spot and another Crosby song and another commercial and the closing theme and we went off the air with people howling and applauding Borge. A telephone call came from New York telling us to sign the guy for as long as possible." (Carroll Carroll

NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE
Victor Borge, who learned music at his mother's knee (the family had no piano), wasn't always 90. Often he was younger. He gave his first concert at 8 "or a few minutes after." When he was about 12, he saw a Russian pianist in Copenhagen, Denmark, accidentally fall off the piano bench. That was for him, marveled young Victor (which wasn't yet his name), "such a cheap slapstick thing." He has been doing it himself almost ever since, although his doctors have recently warned him against it. So, he says, "I still don't do it." But of course he does, in every show. Borge, the long-reigning keyboard comic who lives on a 4 1/2 -acre waterfront estate in Greenwich, Conn., when he is not someplace else, has been making audiences laugh for most of the century, and the fact that he became a nonagenarian Jan. 3 seems no reason to stop. As he says in his recent book of the same name: "Smilet er den korteste afstand." In English: "A smile is the shortest distance." Meaning, between people. (This is Borge's third book and the only one that doesn't have hundreds of footnotes.) Having entertained an estimated 12 million people, and still performing about 60 shows a year, he is planning a Broadway reprise almost 45 years after establishing the Broadway record for a one-man show, 849 performances. The New York Philharmonic and leading orchestras in London, Copenhagen, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland and Los Angeles have fallen under his baton.

Victor Borge to Honor Johansen's Memory
Victor Borge's appearance November 19 at the Oscar Mayer Theatre will provide a number of important opportunities, not least of them to enjoy the scintillating wit and vivacity of Borge's unique comedic style, but also to honor the memory of Borge's great friend and countryman, the pianist Gunnar Johansen, who was for many years artist-in-residence at the UW's School of Music. Borge's appearance is part of a larger Music School project connected with Johansen, the effort to raise substantial amounts as much as $100,000 to fund student scholarships, to catalog the extensive collection of Johansen's scores, recordings and other materials at Mills Music Library, and to bring in guests for recitals and lectures.
