Four tracks feature a beautiful wind ensemble that includes top-notch players such as Donny McCaslin and John Clark. Maria Schneider, the great big band composer, orchestrates and conducts the ensemble on "Artemisia" and "Gently Sleeps the Pear Tree," while Alvaro Cordero performs the same duties on "Feel the Power" and "Ship of Tears." Vibraphone master and Steps Ahead leader Mike Mainieri produced the record, so its success is in part a testament to his supremely good taste. The music on this all-original album is accessible yet without a hint of commercialism. Z’s piano playing is superb. The ensemble formats vary widely; the wind ensemble tracks contrast nicely with the straightahead quartet pieces "Room of One’s Own" and "Set Her Free," as well as unique configurations like "Dance of the Lioness Cub," featuring Z on piano, Helen Campo on flute, and Mino Cinelu on percussion. Z’s unaccompanied solo piece "Talking to Electrons" is also a highlight. Z dedicates each tune to a notable woman, and the hall of greats includes not only the musical figures Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell, but also women from the fields of literature, dance, painting, and film. News 49th E-Mail Letter, March 2003 from Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists THE DALLAS INTERNATIONAL ORGAN COMPETITION' s third triennial competition named the young American organist BRADLEY HUNTER WELCH its First Place winner this week at the Myerson Symphony Center. And the audience agreed wholeheartedly with the judges (headed by England's JOHN SCOTT ), bestowing on him also the Prize of the Audience. He also won the Prize of the Audience at the previous Dallas Competition session in 2000. Bradley is a magna cum laude graduate of Baylor University and holds both a master of Music and a master of musical arts degree from Yale University. Scott Cantrell, the nationally famed music critic of the Dallas Morning News credited Bradley Welch as bringing "visceral excitement" to the competition's semi-final round, and called him "consistently the most compelling player" in the competition. At the previous Dallas Competition in 2000, Mr. Cantrell lauded Bradley for "a welcome naturalness in his playing, an effortless grace." Sophistication and Brazilian Rhythms of Gretchen Parlato Jazz Review by DON HECKMAN Los Angeles Times: August 29, 2000. If you liked Astrud Gilberto, you'll love Gretchen Parlato. Although she was born more than a decade after Gilberto recorded her classic bossa nova albums with Stan Getz, Parlato has a similarly pure, sweet voice and an intuitive knack for Brazilian rhythms. Appearing at Spazio in Sherman Oaks on Sunday night, Parlato revealed a level of musical sophistication not always present in Gilberto's singing. Delivering her lyrical passages with crisp articulation, she also improvised in horn-like fashion, investing her lines with an awareness of the shifting flow of harmonies. The choice of material for a show she labeled "Musica Brasileira" was excellent, ranging from Jobim's classic "Chega De Saudade" to such older pieces as Bide and Marcal's "A Premeira Vez" and Geraldo Pereira's "Falsa Bahiana." In each case, Parlato's musicality was a key element in interpretations that often illuminated the heart of the songs. Parlato was aided enormously by the presence of a superb accompanying ensemble: Larry Koonse, guitar, Tamir Hendelman, piano, Tony Dumas, bass, Enzo Todesco, drums. Given ample room to solo, they used the space enthusiastically, with Hendelman's thoughtful solo on "Chega De Saudade" a highlight of the set.

Associate Professor of Music Tom Flaherty It began again with a low C. The notelovingly coaxed by Associate Professor of Music Tom Flaherty from his cellowould have been remarkable if only because it was the first note concert audiences have heard in Little Bridges in more than a year, the hall having undergone a major renovation to make its acoustics even more dramatic. The success of the renovation was clearly evidenced by the purity and richness of the tone as it warmed even the farthest recesses of the hall. But this C, the opening note of Three Conundrums by Pomona alumnus Gary Wolber '90, gave voice to much more. Here was the mentor playing his student's work; here was another milestone in a long, rich history of composition at Pomona College. Wolber was Flaherty's first composition student when he joined the Pomona music faculty in 1989. Flaherty and his wife, Cynthia Fogg, who teaches violin and viola at Pomona, commissioned the piece for a concert to showcase the range of new classical music. To that end, a work by one Pomona composer would have been noteworthy. This mid-September evening's repertoire also featured works by Pomona College Professor Emeritus Karl Kohn and Music Department staff member Joseph Brennan. And how's this for an encore: The concert that followed a week later premiered works by Kohn, Flaherty and Pomona gamelan master Nyoman Wenten.
