Yefim Bronfman, Piano Truls Mork, Cello Gil Shaham, Violin YEFIM BRONFMAN, Piano Yefim Bronfman appeared on the Chamber Music Society of Detroit series in 1998 in a solo recital and with pianist Emanuel Ax on November 15, 2001. Yefim Bronfman is widely regarded as one of the most talented virtuoso pianists performing today. His commanding technique and exceptional lyrical gifts have won him consistent critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences worldwide, whether for his solo recitals, his prestigious orchestral engagements or his rapidly growing catalogue of recordings. Among the many orchestral engagements featured in Mr. Bronfman’s 2002-03 season are performances of both Brahms concerti with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Lorin Maazel in Japan and at Carnegie Hall, as well as appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the National Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In March Mr. Bronfman will join Mstislav Rostropovich, Yuri Bashmet and musicians of the New York Philharmonic for a performance of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sextet at Avery Fisher Hall. Later in the spring, he will embark on a solo recital tour that includes stops in Rome, Berlin, Milan, Vienna, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington and New York. In previous seasons, Mr. Bronfman has appeared with such celebrated ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has worked with an equally illustrious group of conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Valery Gergiev, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Yuri Temirkanov, Franz Welser-Möst and David Zinman. Summer engagements have regularly taken him to the Aspen, Bad Kissingen, Blossom, Hollywood Bowl, Mann Music Center, Mostly Mozart, Ravinia, Salzburg, Saratoga, Tanglewood and Verbier festivals.

Sunday, March 9, 2003
A growth spurt at 60 is rare, but the Chamber Music Society of Detroit knows when it's time to celebrate. In honor of its 60th anniversary season, the society is expanding its 2003-04 series from eight to nine concerts. Also featured will be a non-subscription performance by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. The season includes an exceptional number of high-profile recitals, including Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. The society has sharpened its artistic profile in recent years, presenting a wider variety of artists, repertoire and special events. Subscriptions are also at an all-time high 513. Many concerts sell out the 720-seat Seligman Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills… [Chamber Music Society president Lois] Beznos said the preponderance of recitals this year was less a matter of planning than a happy coincidence. Also on the bill are return appearances by the Juilliard String Quartet, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio with violinist Jennifer Koh, and the Shanghai Quartet with violinist Arnold Steinhardt and pianist Rieko Aizawa.

Program

Beethoven: Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 13 Schumann: Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op. 26 Tchaikowsky: The Seasons, Op. 37b Balakirev: Islamey Performers
Yefim Bronfman, piano
Having heard him before, I know that pianist Yefim Bronfman can make music that is 100% beautiful. This concert was about 20% beautiful music and 80% pianistic flash, albeit flash of an amazing order. Were there was lyricism, as in the slow movement of Beethoven's "Pathetique" sonata, the Romance from Schumann's Faschingsschwank aus Wien or various parts of Tchaikowsky's Seasons , you could not ask for more it was truly lovely playing. But otherwise the emphasis was on loud and louder, fast and faster. Even in the Beethoven sonata, brilliance for its own sake substantially drowned the music in the outer movements. Delightful as it is to hear the seldom-played Schumann or miniatures like the Tchaikowsky, these pieces suffer from long stretches of the prolixity endemic to music's high-Romantic ethos, much of it fortissimo. I suppose virtuosos play Balakirev's Islamey for the same reason people climb Everest: because they can. Bronfman certainly can, but why? the work has no form and less substance. The encore Scarlatti sonata was charming and delicate, but Chopin's "Revolutionary" etude was too fast and way too loud. A curious and not very satisfying program, overall.

Event Profile For pianist Yefim Bronfman, it's 'what's in your mind and in your heart' that matters By Valerie Scher CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC November 28, 2002 Back in February, Grammy-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman was heard at downtown's Civic Theatre in an enthusiastically received performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with conductor Yuri Temirkanov and Russia's St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Bronfman's outpouring of Rachmaninoff isn't over. On Wednesday, the Russian-born, New York-based virtuoso returns to San Diego, this time to open the La Jolla Chamber Music Society's 2002-03 series at La Jolla's Sherwood Auditorium. In addition to works by Beethoven, Prokofiev and Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, the program includes seven Preludes composed by Rachmaninoff in 1903-04. "I play a lot of Rachmaninoff's music he's a very important composer," the 44-year-old Bronfman says of the Russian musician who died in Beverly Hills in 1943.

Yefim Bronfman: Wenn der Flügel zum Hydranten wird
    Konzert
    KONZERT

We are pleased to extend an enthusiastic welcome into the TelHai family and expressdeep gratitude to yefim bronfman, the great Israeli pianist and dear friend
    http://masterclasses.org.il/index2.htm
Since its inception, the idea of the Tel-Hai International Piano Master Classes has been to bring together the world's prominent artist-teachers and gifted young pianists for an intensive exploration of the great riches of piano repertoire in an atmosphere of friendly informality, camaraderie and common endeavour.
Now in its twelfth year, the talent and professional level of young pianists drawn to this annual event has been evident for years to all those attending the student concerts and open master classes. And so, when in the span of a month after the conclusion of last year's Tel-Hai Piano Master Classes, two of its participants appeared in the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival alongside Daniel Barenboim, Yefim Bronfman, and Kyrill Gerstein, while two others won top prizes in international piano competitions in Europe, the Master Classes organizers were delighted but hardly surprised.
We are pleased to extend an enthusiastic welcome into the Tel-Hai family and express deep gratitude to Yefim Bronfman , the great Israeli pianist and dear friend, for taking the project under his patronage.

Music director Hans Vonk has been forced to bow out of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's annual concert at New York's Carnegie Hall, this Friday, due to illness.
In December, Vonk, 59, announced that he was suffering from a relapse of Guillain-Barre syndrome, which causes weakness in the arms and legs. He had originally been diagnosed with the problem in 1988.
In a statement, concertmaster David Halen said, "It is a great personal tragedy to me and to the orchestra that Hans is unable to perform, He is a man of great courage and has put the welfare of the orchestra ahead of himself in making this decision."
Vonk will be replaced for the performance by David Robertson, music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon in France, in a program that will feature pieces by Debussy and Ravel. He expects to return to the orchestra for upcoming concerts in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Amsterdam.
