Events Commentaries Elián Archive ... Home People-To-Cronies Cultural Exchanges And The Depths Of Hell © ABIP 1999 by Agustín Blázquez with the collaboration of Jaums Sutton As Castro becomes even more intolerant and increases his repression maintaining his "socialism or death" mantra, Cubans are astonished by the Clinton Administration’s one-sided "calibrated steps" that are not helping the people living under Castro’s boot. Among the calibrated steps taken in a foolish attempt to appease the Stalinist tyrant are the so-called "people to people" cultural exchanges. In practice, we have seen the fallacy behind these contacts, which fails to materialize on both sides. Recent examples include the Orioles’ game in Havana last March 28 when Castro refused to sell tickets to ordinary citizens. Instead, his cronies filled the 55,000 seats in the stadium. When the Cuban team played against the Orioles in Baltimore on May 3rd, the Cuban players were sequestered preventing direct contact even with the American players, much less the American fans. A huge popular music concert was held in Havana last March with the participation of many US performers. Castro followed the same scheme. Tickets were distributed only among his cronies. So, the much-ballyhooed people-to-people contact in fact did not materialize.

Leaves of verse: On a brilliant fall day, a young Tokyo woman in a brightly patterned kimono attaches a piece of paper to a branch. A poem waves in the wind. Part of a fall exhibit at the David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art, the image-Woman Tying Poem Slip to a Maple Tree-is from the printed book, Edo no Nishiki (The Many Colors of Edo), illustrated by Ikeda Terukata (1883-1921). Terukata, a printmaker and painter, recalls an ancient Japanese pastime of court ladies and men: picnicking under the fall's foliage, writing poetry inspired by the day and company, and tying the verses-called tanzaku, or poetry slips-to the boughs. While each illustration in The Many Colors of Edo presents a scenic view from the capital city of Tokyo, the artist focuses on the young women who inhabit the landscapes. It's a focus in keeping with the Smart exhibit: Woman in the Eyes of Man: Images of Women in Japanese Art brings together paintings, prints, and illustrated books from the 17th through the 20th centuries to reveal a set of idealized feminine types, each presented as a role model.

Representing National and International Artists
He has been a legend for three generations of Cuban musicians, both as a composer and pianist, playing an important part in the evolution of Cuban Latin Jazz. His career has gone from the Cuban descarga (jam session) of the 1930's to the dance music of the orquesta tipicas in the 1950's and '60s and the Cuban jazz of the modern era. In the 40's Flynn refined his classical piano playing, studied orchestration and worked with musicians who were infusing American music with their own styles. He formed a band Loquibambia that included vocalist Omara Portuando. In the 50's, Flynn went on to lead the five-man combo Grupo Cubano de Musica Moderna, devoted to the new Latin jazz - blending Cuban rhythms and jazz. Los Amigos was born in this era and led by Peruchin until he died in 1977, when Flynn took the lead.
Flynn was one of major instrumentalists of the "filin" sound of the 50's that laced the Cuban bolero with a jazz sound. "In the Fifties and Sixties, Frank Emilio and his quintet nurtured the Latin jazz style," commented Chucho Valdés. "They were a model for a lot of groups and for individual musicians." He played with Cuban greats such as sonero Miguel Matamoros, Antonio Maria Romeu, Ignacio Pineiro and his Septeto Nacional. Flynn is also known for his refined understanding of the classical traditions of European composers such as Chopin, Ravel and Bach and Cuban composers such as Ignacio Cervantes and Ernesto Lecuona. According to Chucho Valdes "Frank Emilio is a pianist who has influenced every subsequent generation and those to come".

His father, Angel Diaz, is an outstanding musician and equally talented composer who united Jose Antonio Mendez and Cesar Portillo de la Luz and initiated the movement known as "Filin" popularized in the forties. BEING THE SON
of one of the world's greatest pianists, Chucho Valdés , and grandson of one of the most influential artists in Afro-Cuban music, Bébo Valdés , must be hard. Yet for Jesus "Chuchito" Valdés Jr., it has been a natural evolution guiding him down a musical path very similar to his father's and grandfather’s. At 36, he is the eldest son of a family of five and making a name for himself as a pianist, composer and arranger. "I began studying classical music as a boy," says Chuchito. "When I was 13-14, I decided to put my piano studies aside and play baseball as a pitcher for the Cuban national team for my age group." He dropped the piano briefly but soon returned to La Escuela de Música Ignacio Cervantes to specialize in classical as well as Cuban popular music until graduation. His awareness of jazz rose around the age of 3 to 4 when he heard his father play records by Bill Evans, Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson, as well as popular Cuban players like Peruchin, Lili Martinez and Bébo Valdés, his grandfather. His first professional jazz stint was at age 16 with Cuban jazz vocalist and trumpeter Bobby Carcasses. From there, he accompanied a variety of popular singers like Pello El Afrikan, the king of the Mozambique style, Anibel Lopez, the sister of Silvio Rodriguez, and Sonido Contempora, a group that included such virtuoso alumni as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Hilario Duran and others.

74. Afro-European Classical Music
ignacio cervantes (18471905) was Cuba’s most important nineteenth-century composer. fameas a violinist and composer after the American pianist Louis Moreau
http://www.geocities.com/musicforum256/afroeuropeanmusic.html
Between 1810 and 1830 Latin America was beginning to free itself from the political dominance of Spain and Portugal. This development considerably influenced musical composition and performance in the emerging nations and culminated, during the late nineteenth century , in musical nationalism: Latin American composers consciously sought to differentiate their music from classical European styles by incorporating local folk idioms into their works. By the 1860s, Latin America had all but abolished the institution of slavery. Only Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Cuba continued to receive African slaves until the late 1880s, thus reinforcing the African influences in their music. By the turn of the century many blacks were able to participate more fully in the musical life of Latin American societies.
In countries with a substantial African presence, such as Brazil, Cuba, and other Caribbean countries, composers, black and white, liberally incorporated the rhythms, Afro-Creole heritage. For some prominent composers, such as Amadeo Roldan (Cuba) and Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazil), Afro-Creole traditions were the principal source of inspiration and thus a significant component in the expression and affirmation of their countries’ national identities. As musicologist Nicolas Slonimsky notes, “The creative musician occupies an exalted place in the social fabric of the Latin-American countries. He is the pride of the nation…[and] serves his country by enhancing its cultural prestige.”

Zimmerman also took time to show off his considerable abilities as a magician, pulling silvery coins from air and ear, but he performed his real magic on the ivories. Exclusive Interview!
Issac Delgado is back!
April 25, 2001
by Jacira Castro
with assistance from Kevin Moore
Isaac Felipe Delgado Ramírez was born on September 11th, 1962 in Havana, Cuba, the middle child of three. His older brother, Nelson, was a singer, guitarist and composer. Issac studied at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, where a life-long friendship began. It was Gonzalo who nudged Issac into becoming a musician. I had the opportunity to visit with Issac again, so let me tell you what's up with him! JACIRA: Can you tell us a bit about your childhood? Your parents were musicians? Did you ever study music formally? ISSAC: My father was a tailor, and my mother was an actress in the theater. She was the founder of Las Mulatas de Fuego, an internationally renowned group. Her first husband was Ángel Díaz, the son of Tirso Díaz, a famous troubadour from the "Feeling" movement in Cuba, together with José Antonio Méndez and César Portillo de la Luz. There was always this "Feelingesque" atmosphere in my home!
