Don't be surprised when you find the elements of other dance forms incorporated into the Salsa step patterns. Salsa dancing offers a variety of styles, such as New York, LA or Los Angeles Style, Puerto-Rican Salsa and Casino de Rueda. One may wonder what came first: The music or the dance. Human sense is at its best through hearing, so probably the very first salsa was a tone. It is this tone, this rhythm, you experience in the company of "The Coral Negro". The core-members of the band, Maria, Carlos and Alexis, were all brought up in the very heart of the afro-Cuban salsa music breeding ground in Havana during the 1960's. Consequently as teenagers they already had routine in performing the warm tones of the Cuban people. The development of the music of The Coral Negro revolves around the composer and double bass player John, who professionally played the danish fusion jazz in the 1970's and later joined the disco-scene in USA with The Drifters. Cliburn Concerts PRESENTERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT Two Orchestras from New York State Write Their History with Cliburn Winners After 15 years, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO), under the baton of Music Director Daniel Hege, will return to the stage of Carnegie Hall on Saturday, April 5, 2003. This highly anticipated event features Stanislav Ioudenitch performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, the work with which he won the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition The Carnegie Hall performance is the culmination of a tour that will take the SSO to eleven cities in the Northeast with programs featuring Mr. Ioudenitch as well as Olga Kern , the other 2001 Cliburn gold medalist. Ms. Kern performs Rachmainoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 during her SSO tour appearances. Of the selection of Mr. Ioudenitch to perform at Carnegie Hall , music director Daniel Hege says, "I am greatly anticipating working with this first-rate musician to breathe fresh life into one of the pillars of the piano concerto repertoire." Helmut Rilling, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, et al. - Edition Bachakademie set, Hanssler. Buy this set and you will be knee-deep in Bach literally. The carton containing the CDs is so huge you'll have trouble lifting it. But opening it is exhilarating and overwhelming. There are treasures within for the most fanatic aficionados. Don't be wary about investing $1700 in the talents of one conductor. Helmut Rilling is a seasoned Bach conductor. Not a proponent of the period instrument movement, he adopts a spirited modern approach. His orchestral pace is swift, his performers creative. In the harpsichord concertos, expertly performed by Robert Levin, Rilling's tempo is delicious-he treats rests more like notes than pauses. The performances range from the extraordinary to the acceptable with very few clunkers. Bach's resplendent choral worksthe St. Matthew and St. John Passions, the Christmas Oratorio, and the Mass in B Minor shake the room with baroque jubilance and anguish. Rilling applies the master's glorious counterpoint and polyphonic choral movements with emotive skill. His St. John Passion contains the alternate versions for five sections. He infuses the eight volumes of the Bach chorale books with a refreshing humanism, unclogged by the usual solemnity. Unfortunately, all of them have the same boilerplate program notes. Other program notes in the series are more comprehensive.
