Directed by Drew Daywalt and David Schneider; starring Seann William Scott, Lou Diamond Phillips, Terry Chen The defining image of Roman Polanski's cinema is Donald Pleasence alone at dawn, clutching his head in his hands as he sits on a sea-girt rock at the end of Cul-de-Sac. The defining quotation is the final line of his most celebrated picture: 'Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown.' We live alone, he says, and there is no understanding the human condition. No wonder that the two classic works he has filmed are Macbeth, which tells us that life is a tale told by an idiot, and Tess of the D'Urbervilles, which concludes after 'the President of the Immortals, in Aeschylean phrase, had ended his sport with Tess'. These themes are pursued in The Pianist , his first film in his native Poland since Knife in the Water more than 40 years ago and the first to engage directly with his own experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust.

Roman Polanksi's The Pianist was shown in competition, and won, the Palm d'Or:
Half of the critics felt that it was a deserved win, while the other half were uneasy at the "laconic" treatment of the Holocaust (although this may be in keeping with the book, which ends up being quite numb), and have accused the Cannes jury of PC in light of Europe's move to the Right (and sometimes Far Right).. Tomi Fitzgerald, Clerk-Typist (reassigned from Encino-Tarzana Branch)
Early in her career, Tomi found she particularly enjoyed working with children and their parents. The Los Angeles Public Library offered an opportunity to pursue this “feeling of having contributed a ray of sunshine to my fellow citizens,” so she applied in December 2001 and joined the Encino-Tarzana Staff last March. Before that, she attended Pacific Oaks College. Future plans include classes in finance and accounting at UCLAbut just as a sideline. She is seriously considering a major in Library Sciences. Currently commuting from Pasadena, Tomi says she also hopes her family will decide to join her here from their home in Colorado. Her parents are Japanese and African-Cherokee; she was born in Kobe, Japan...which means, she thinks, she’s an American of Afrasian extraction.
