He will add to that list when he performs in a piano trio with two guest artists his wife, violinist Alicia Yang, and an old acquaintance, pianist Melvin Chen at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus. They will perform two of the major 19th-century works for piano trio: the Trio in B-flat major, D. 898, of Franz Schubert, and the Trio in F minor, op. 65, of Antonin Dvorak. The performance will be free and open to the public. Chen brings an unusual dimension to the trio. A multi-talented performer, he has studied and played professionally as both violinist and pianist. He holds a double master's degree from the Juilliard School in piano and violin, and a doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University. At Yale, he performed as a piano soloist with the Yale Symphony after winning the William Waite concerto competition as a freshman, and later won the competition again to appear with the orchestra as a violin soloist. "Melvin Chen is an interesting story by himself," Yang says. "He is mainly a pianist right now, but he and I have performed before as a duo when he was playing the violin. He is clearly some sort of genius with the ability to excel on both instruments at Juilliard and Yale and at Harvard in chemistry!"

Main Essential Library Resources Composer Bios FLOYD COLLINS Music and Lyrics by Adam Guettel, Book by Tina Landau Prince Music Theater, Philadelphia April 2-17, 1999 by Deborah Kravetz This reprise of the American Music Theater Festival’s 1995 Obie-award winning production opens with the cast silhouetted against a sunrise scrim, a technique that is used throughout to demarcate scenes. The tone is bluegrass twang with guitar and harmonica; the singing is country colloquial; the text is free verse that sometimes falls into those annoying rhyming couplets so characteristic of 1980’s musicals. OK, what is it? Too talky and not enough music to be a musical, it’s almost crying out to become an opera—singing through the dialog might dignify the material that Guettel has already composed as long meandering phrases in conversational rhythm. The story is simple: Floyd gets trapped in an underground cave with visions of creating a spectacular tourist attraction in rural Kentucky of 1925. When he can’t get out, he philosophizes and hallucinates. Friends and family attempt to help, and philosophize, and the rescue crew and media create a carnival atmosphere, and philosophize. The music is not memorable; what remains as memorable is the visual: The Riddle Song of Floyd’s and his brother’s energetic reminiscences, and the reporters’ Is That Remarkable , for its dance, its sudden close, three-part harmony and ragtime rhythm (but not a melody in sight), and satiric lyrics about newspapers and reporting. Get Comfortable is a hard blues number with a rhythmic driving bass that takes place during a rainstorm (really, on stage). The only motif that stayed with me was Floyd’s echoing yo-do-di-oh-do yodel, which is perilously close to the vamp of New York, New York.

It is really wonderful to see the change in both the playing and the confidence of Marina Kolomiitseva since the Year 2000 Competition. We all remember her as a very shy and almost frightened young lady as she undertook her concert tour after the Competition. Now her playing has a greater authority and maturity and, together with her flawless technique, she is able to hold the audience spellbound throughout each performance. Her interaction with the audience has also greatly improved. She has been talking with the audience after her recitals in several cities as she is now much more fluent in English. A report from the Head of Piano at the Queensland Conservatorium after her sellout performance indicated that it was a very fine recital with that ‘special spark of a real artist’. April highlights include the appearances of Russian pianist Elena Shishko and classical guitarist Oscar Ghiglia; individual master classes by Shishko, Ghiglia, and Emmy Award-winning vocal coach Joan Dornemann; and a Kids Fare concert that will show youngsters how a conductor gets a group of musicians to perform together. The Rochester Review, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, USA Eastman School of Music Go to: Pre-1950s University of South Florida professor and composer Robert Helps wrote his Symphony No. 2 with a commission from the Institute for American Music at Eastman in honor of Donald Engle E (Mas), according to a report in the November 10 St. Petersburg Times . Engle, a longtime symphony orchestra and foundation executive in Philadelphia, New York, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, lives in Clearwater and volunteers for the Florida Orchestra, which will premiere the piece next season. Donald Stauffer '41, '42E (Mas), retired commander of the U.S. Navy Band, was a special guest conductor at the October 24 concert in Ridgefield, Conn., on the 30th anniversary of the Kiwanis Club program bringing the nation's leading military bands to Ridgefield. In the accompanying photo, Stauffer is seen on stage with the combined bands of the West Point Military Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard. A Commander Stauffer scholarship was established in 1975 and is awarded annually by the Kiwanis Club to an outstanding high school music student. Stauffer lives in the Eastwood, Ala., area and conducts the Birmingham Community Concert Band. . . . William Warfield '88E (DMA) performed at the holiday concert presented by the William Warfield Scholarship Fund, Inc., at Kilbourn Hall. We have heard every numbered opus by Arnold Schoenberg with the exception of one or two which I simply have been unable to find. In addition, the master also wrote several unnumbered pieces, generally based upon works by other composers. We will end our year long examination of Schoenberg, then, with a broadcast of his Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra (after Handel) (1933). From time to time, as I acquire some of his other transcriptions, I will give them pride of place. 1.
