It sounds bizarre, but it actually worked. On Monday evening, in celebration of another Brazilian victory, Klein played a pre-concert recital with pianist Adam Neiman showcasing three works of Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda (b. 1927). The oboist returned in the main concert, playing a transcribed Bach Flute Sonata (BWV 1030) with pianist Wendy Chen and cellist Toby Saks. The chief pleasure here was hearing Klein's beautiful and stylish ornamentation; the ensemble, however, seemed a bit uneasy and inflexible, not always backing off in response to the soloist's dynamic changes. Rosy Cloud Chasing the Moon This popular love song tells of a lady who wanders around flowering bushes and waits for her love, but he disappoints her. The zheng, also known as the zither or the gu zheng, is a traditional Chinese plucked musical instrument with multiple strings on it. Its history dates back two thousand years (211-207 BC) to the Qin Dynasty, when it was first known as the "Qin zheng." This instrument was introduced to Japan, Korea, as well as nations of south-east Asia about 1000 years ago. So the popularity was not just limited to China, but was in those countries as well. With the long history of its popularity, the word "gu," which means ancient or old in Chinese, is added to the name zheng to signify its impressive history. Today the instrument is formally called "gu zheng." The Qin zheng of 207 BC had five strings. The instrument was traditionally played by means of the right hand plucking strings on one side of the string post with the left hand stopping, vibrating, or changing the note of the strings on the other side. Both hands had specific jobs to do. Through time, the techniques of playing have evolved. The left hand has borrowed some of the right-hand techniques to produce polyphony and other more difficult musical effects unfulfilled by the traditional ways of performing. This continuous development of the performing techniques has also altered the gu zheng's formative system. The 5-string system is no longer enough. The number of strings was increased to 13 during the Sui and Tang Dynasties (581 AD - 907 AD) Fourteen- and 16-stringed instruments respectively came into being during the Yuan, Ming, and Ching Dynasties (1911). From the 1930s to the present, the number of strings has been continuously increased to 18, 21, 23, 25, and 26.

"The first goal of the meeting with the judges will be to provide a public forum to permit interested University community members to express their concerns and views about recent campus events," said Rodger Summers, vice president for student affairs. "The second goal will be for the judges to provide insight about the issues and help me diate and bring about a better understanding among and between students, student groups, faculty and staff members." CAMPBELL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC This is not the first summer the Seattle Chamber Music Festival has gotten off to a booming start, from musical and box-office viewpoints. MUSIC REVIEW SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL MUSICIANS: Godfried Hoogeveen, Adam Neiman, Wendy Chen, Alex Klein, Ida Levin, Jon Kimura Parker and others WHEN: Monday night; festival runs through July 26 WHERE: Lakeside School TICKETS: $25-$32, with student/senior discounts; 206-283-8808 But the 2002 season has the earmarks of an exceptional summer. At the opening of the second week of the monthlong festival Monday night at Lakeside School, there was an audible buzz to borrow Tina Brown's famous phrase during her days at the New Yorker about the previous week. Not only was the music making top-notch, two nights were sold out. A capacity audience also filled St. Nicholas Hall on Monday and will again at tonight's concert. Next week is sold out, as is the final concert July 26. Connie Cooper, the festival's capable executive director who was all smiles Monday, predicted that 10 of the 12 concerts this season will end up with no empty seats.

Ron has been tuning my piano for years. Every time he comes, he has a story to tell about how he's experimenting in rebuilding some old Baldwin, or trying out some other idea he's been working on. The last couple of times, he brought the news that he had an entire piano, ready in final draft. Why didn't I come and take a look, have a play? My real piano-playing years are regrettably long behind me. I'm thinking: would I even know if I'm playing something unusual? And it's embarrassing to play badly, even for an audience of piano-technicians. (Though who ever heard a piano tuner who could play the piano?!) Curiosity edged out reticence. That was surprising. Even more surprising was the piano itself. Unlike the very beautiful looking Stuart and Sons pianos from Newcastle, the Overs-Steinbach doesn't look special. In fact, it looks like a conventional black Alex Steinbach seven-foot grand, because the Overs inventions are all on the inside of the Korean-made (Samick) case and frame. But boy, it sounds and feels great.

Reports by William Hsieh on Saturday, November 25, 2000 Recital on Thursday night, November 23rd What I'm about to write below are from my readings of bits and pieces of Taiwanese media on the Internet , so excuse the incoherence. Argerich finally set foot on Taiwan, among much speculation of cancellation. She appeared to be in a great mood, even telling people that she had previously visited Taiwan (private visit) some 30 years ago with Charles Dutoit, who is an avid traveler. As she was quite tired from the recent Japanese tour, she headed straight to her hotel to catch some zzzz's "as much as she felt like" before she would rehearse the next day. Meanwhile, an accoustics expert was called in to adjust the hall acoustics. Two extra standing panels were installed on both far ends of the stage, the one already hovering above the stage was lowered. All panels had their angles adjusted for maximum projection. As it turned out, she was late for the rehearsal, making rumors fly again about a possible no-show.
