Many of the piece descriptions are paraphrased or copied from Maurice Hinson's "Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire." This is an excellent reference work that a serious pianist should not be without. This work is constructed more like a narrative than the others. Tonal ambiguity permeates the first 30 bars or so which are technically easy but musically more challenging. Fast legato and octaves and a long coda require advanced pianism.

THE PIANIST Wojciech Kilar / Frederic Chopin MMMm
Review by Andrew Keech Roman Polanski's The Pianist tells of an outstanding Jewish musician trapped in the Warsaw ghetto who eludes capture while his family is sent to Nazi labour camps. The music for the film is credited to the renowned Wojciech Kilar, who has been at the head of a wave of great Polish film composers creating impressive film music both in Poland and the rest of the world. His recent scores have included Bram Stoker's Dracula, Death And The Maiden, Portrait Of A Lady and the wonderful Pan Tadeusz . However, on this album he is sidelined heavily by Frederic Chopin, primarily because the storyline calls for Wladyslaw Szpilman, played by Adrien Brody, to demonstrate his outstanding talent by playing Chopin piano solos. The majority of the Chopin cues are piano solos and include three Nocturnes (in C-sharp Minor, Op.72 and Op.48), Ballades No.1 and No.2 and Waltz No.3. Two Grande Polonaise and the Prelude in E Minor accompany Andante Spianato in G Major. These piano solos are performed with great depth of feeling and passion by Janusz Olejniczak.

    http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/4492/chopin.html
    Frederic Francois Chopin
Frederic Francois Chopin A Classical Pianist and Composer
His life . Ferderic Francios Chopin, one of the world's greatest composers, was born in a village near Warsaw, Poland, on March 1, 1810. His mother was polish, and his father was a Frenchman. Chopin was a child prodigy. At a very young age he showed an amazing talent as a pianist and composer. He began composing prodigiously when he was seven years old, played a difficult piano concerto when he was eight, and published his first major composition when he was fifteen. In 1829, Chopin began a concert tour that included Vienna, Munich, and Paris. His playing won such high praise in Paris that he decided to settle there for life. He never returned to Poland. In 1837, Chopin began a famous love affair with George Sand, a Frenchwoman novelist. He traveled with her to the Mediterranean island of Majorca during the winter of 1838-1839. Bad weather there weakened his already failing health. His affair with George Sand ended with a quarrel in 1847. He was then ill with tuberculosis. He died on October 17, 1849 at the age of 39. His works . Although Chopin never wrote a single symphony, opera, string quartet or choral in his thirty-nine years, he stands as one of the world's greatest composers, especially a master of small musical forms. His works for piano solo include three sonata, four ballades, four large-scale scherzos, about forty mazurkas in a Polish 3/4 dance rhythm, and about fifteen polonaises in a stately Polish dance rhythm. His other solo pieces include twenty-five etudes, twenty-one nocturnes, thirty-two preludes, a bacarole, a berceuse, a bolero, a fantasia, a tarantella, and several rondos. His Fantaisie Impromptu in C# minor is perhaps his greatest single work.
