Frederic Chopin
Frederic Chopin Frederic Chopin was a thin, frail virtuoso pianist from Poland. Chopin ("sho-PAN," except that you don’t really pronounce the final N) single-handedly revolutionized the world of piano music. He changed everybody’s idea of what was possible on the piano (intimate, brilliant, singing, diverse tone colors) and what was not (apparently nothing). Like so many of the composers, Frederic Chopin was a boy wonder. At age seven, he published his first composition in Poland; only a year later, he made his debut as a concert pianist. His childhood was rich with the sounds of Poland’s national dances, such as the polonaise and the mazurka – musical influences that filled his head and his music forever after. Frederic composed all his pieces at the piano, and he loved to improvise as he performed them. In fact, he hated to write them down, because that meant freezing them in one form. Unfortunately, all of Chopin’s on-the-spot genius is lost to history, in those days, camcorders were still in the testing labs. After Chopin came to Paris at age 21, his virtuoso caused a sensation; nobody had heard music like his before. Unfortunately, because he was so fragile and sickly, he couldn’t play many concerts. Still, he managed to support himself by selling his compositions and giving piano lessons. He limited his live performances primarily to small, less stressful “salon” concerts – concerts in somebody’s home. In these, he was wildly successful.

Frederic Chopin
The Polish composer Frederic Chopin was born in Zelasowa Wola and studied music from the age of six. By the time he was seven, he had begun his career as a concert pianist and had his first piece published. He entered the Warsaw Conservatory and after diligent study emerged with honours in 1829. His first trip abroad was to Vienna, where he gave two successful concerts. Life outside Poland was seductive, and after a brief visit home Chopin left his native land for good, eventually settling in France, his father's homeland. Although only 20, he was already an accomplished pianist noted for his sensitive playing and imaginative improvisations. He had also composed two of his largest works, both piano concertos. In each work the orchestra's role is secondary to that of the soloist, whose part demands virtuoso playing of the highest standard. Arriving in Paris in 1831 Chopin quickly made influential friends, but success was slower to come his way. Although a gifted musician, he was not a natural performer: his introverted nature did not appeal in the concert hall and his first appearance was coolly received. Chopin's response was to perform only in the Parisian Salon, which earned him the reputation of a snob. However, it was there that his intimate music was heard to best effect and he soon became one of the most popular and well-paid performers in the French capital.

Chopin spent most of the first twenty years of his life in Warsaw. The Polish capital was rather provincial; still he was able to hear many of the best artists of the time perform there. Italian opera and singing in general had an indelible effect on him, through the performances of such great singers as Angelica Catalani. Long before Liszt heard Paganini, Chopin was learning from his violinistic feats.
Hummel, too, played in Warsaw, and his tentative Romanticism and richly ornamented keyboard layout ignited Chopin's precocious genius. Other influences during his adolescence included Spohr's then strangely exotic chromaticism, Field's fragrant nocturnes, and the mysteriousness of Weber. Of equal importance were the dance forms of his homeland. From the age of eight, Chopin occupied himself with them, haunted by their rhythms, dreaming of an idealized Poland. The last page of music he wrote was a mazurka.
Hearing Chopin play the A-flat Etude Op. 25, No.1, Schumann imagined "an Aeolian harp that had all the scales, and these were intermingled by the hand of the artist into all sorts of fantastic embellishments. It was rather an undulation brought out more loudly here and there with the pedal, all gorgeously entangled in the harmony."

Several months after his birth, the whole family moved to Warsaw, where Mikolaj Chopin was offered the post of French language and literature lecturer in the Warsaw Lyceum. He also ran a boarding school for sons of the gentry. Upon his return to Warsaw, Chopin, already free from student duties, devoted himself to composition and wrote, among other pieces, two Concertos for piano and orchestra: in F minor and E minor. MY LOVE FOR THE PIANIST CZIFFRA My pianoteacher (Willy Appermont, Belgium) was the reason why i deceided to go on playing piano (before I met him, I was playing the piano for 4 years). He played for me "like nowone played", he was the best... and he had a record, where Cziffra improvised.
After the first time listening to this record... I was completely "out"... and I began to listen to other records of Cziffra. I discoverd his records of the Hungarian Rhapsody's and the "études transcendante" from Liszt. Afterwards I began to buy also the Chopin recordings... I am now 34 years old and have almost everything. At the age of 16, I was asking everywhere I could, the addres of CZIFFRA... one day one of my solfege teachers tould me: "I believe "he" is living in Paris... and she gave me an address. So I wrote a lettre, but the lettre came back... Cziffra was moved out.
As a coincedence, this same teacher told me few weeks after: "he" is now living in Senlis, and he is the director of the "Fondation Cziffra", a sort of institute to promote young musicians (in fact, ALL young artists).
So, I wrote a second lettre in wich I asked if the transcriptions where already published. I received immediatly answer... from his wife, not his secretary... with... a card from Cziffra himself "for my friends, from Georges Cziffra" and... a copy (!!!) from the first version of his "bumble bee" and "tritsch tratsch polka". He even made some adjustments to the notes.

    Final Paper
November 10, 1999 To briefly introduce Frederic Chopin, one should comment on his amazing contribution to music. He composed almost entirely piano music and produced a wealth of music that forever changed the way we listen to and understand the piano. He naturally transferred his fervent emotion into music. Born in 1810 in the Duchy of Warsaw, he began playing the piano at age three and was composing at age seven. He was a passionate, energetic youth until the onset of tuberculosis in his early twenties. He continued to compose, teach piano lessons, and give small concerts throughout his life, despite his physical weakness. Slowly but painfully, his physical and mental health deteriorated until his death in 1849. In studying child development in his book Childhood and Society One of the most influential contributions to our understanding of human development is Erikson’s theory of the eight stages of development. At each stage there is a crisis, which is actually the psychosocial development of critical steps-"‘critical’ being a characteristic of turning points, of moments of decision between progress and regression." Erikson explained that at each stage a new conflict adds a new ego quality. Chopin presents an interesting subject for analysis using the eight stages.
