Frederic Chopin biography
Frederic Francois Chopin, Polish-born composer and renowned pianist, was the creator of 55 mazurkas, 13 polonaises, 24 preludes, 27 etudes, 19 nocturnes, 4 ballads, and 4 scherzos. But did you know that Chopin's teacher was disappointed in him because he never wrote a Polish opera? And what of his national allegiance? Did you know that Chopin's family was of French lineage? Did you know that he was buried in Paris but asked that Polish soil be sprinkled over his grave? These are but a few of the lesser-known facts about the well-known musician. Chopin was born Frederic (spelled in Polish as Fryderyk) Francois (French) Chopin, his very name indicative of the blended impact two countries made on the precocious musician's life. His father, Nicholas Chopin, was a French tutor to many aristocratic Polish families, later accepting a position as a French teacher at the Warsaw Lyceum. bodyOffer(27288) Although Chopin later attended the Lyceum where his father taught, his early training began at home. This included receiving piano lessons from his mother. By the age of six, Chopin was creating original pieces, showing innate prodigious musical ability. His parents arranged for the young Chopin to take piano instruction from Wojciech Zywny. Zywny taught the boy the work of classical composers Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, but with an ear open and sympathetic to the individualism infiltrating the music of a dawning Romantic Period. Artistically, this period represented an era dedicated to the creation of ideas and impressions, beauty, imagination and sentiment. The music synonymous with this time was intensely personal and emotional. Emphases were placed on color, tone, and dynamics, a rather impressive outbreak from the "follow the rules" Classical Period with its focus on structure and form. Wojciech Zywny's tutelage influenced the young Chopin perhaps immeasurably, as Chopin's compositions were Romantically expressive and emotional, yet defined by a purity derived from the Classical Period before him.

Nocturnes Op.62 and the second from Op.55). Mozart was a favourite, Beethoven less so. His attitude towards his contemporaries was ambiguous at best. He was cool towards Schumann, never reciprocating the latter’s enthusiasm for his own music. And his admiration for Liszt was tinged with jealousy. But perhaps the most important aspects of his personality were his insecurity and his indecisiveness (many letters to his parents in which he expresses his hesitation between going back to Poland to fight alongside his countrymen or staying in his new adopted home attest to this trait). This "folie du doute," his inability to make up his mind, actually permeates many of his works and is even reflected in his harmonic language, making him by far one of the most original harmonists of his time. Program Notes by Frederic Chiu Années de Pèlerinage, Deuxième Année: Italie Franz Liszt “I have latterly traveled through many new countries, have seen many different places, and visited many a spot hallowed by history and poetry.” Liszt’s pervasive influence in history cannot be overstated. He was a pioneer not only in music, but also as one of the first great world travelers. His cross-crossing of Europe during his 1838-1848 Glanzzeit – when his force and influence as a virtuoso were at their burning height – is still the model today for how the public imagines the life of the concert performer. Just before embarking on these years of incessant traveling and performing, Liszt spent some of his most inspired years away from Paris, in the natural wilderness of Switzerland and the brimming sensuality of Italian culture. The days were spent in intense study of Byron, Shakespeare and Dante. This was when the Années de Pèlerinage took seed.

His playing as a whole was unique in its kind, and no traditions of it can remain, for there is no school of Chopin the pianist, for the obvious reason that he could never be regarded as a public player, and his best pupils were nearly all amateurs.” The posthumous works number 35 pieces, besides a small volume of songs a few of which are of great interest. Franz Liszt wrote a charming sketch of Chopin’s life and art (F. Chopin, par F. Liszt, Paris, 1851), and a very appreciative though somewhat eccentric analysis of his work appeared anonymously in 1842 (An Essay on the Works of Fridéric Chopin, London). The standard biography is the English work of Professor F. Niecks (Novello, 1888). See also W. H. Hadow, Studies in Modern Music, second series (1908). The editions of Chopin’s works by his pupil Mikuli and by Klindworth are full of valuable elucidation as to methods of performance, but unfortunately they do not distinguish the commentary from the text. The critical edition published by Breitkopf and Härtel, with all its mistakes, is absolutely necessary ~or students who wish to know what Chopin wished to put into the hands of players of independent judgment.

Chinese Pianist Wins Gold in Poland's Chopin Competition
Chinese pianist Li Yundi won the gold medal Friday at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, the first time the event's top prize has been awarded since 1985.
The Chopin competition, held every five years since 1927, is devoted entirely to music by the 19th-century Polish composer. The judging is so tough that in 1990 and 1995 no performances were deemed good enough for a gold medal.
Li, still a student at Shenzhen Art School, has won several prizes at the international level. His past honors include a first place at the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1999, and a third place at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in the Netherlands
Second place in the Chopin competition was awarded to Ingrid Fliter, 27, of Argentina , and third went to Alexander Kobrin of Russia
The 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, which opened on October 4, 2000, attracted 98 players from 25 countries.
Three rounds of competitions were held before the final began.

This document does not attempt to be a final word on anything. It has always been in a state of flux, and I expect it will continue to be so for a while to come. Some of my information is woefully inadequate (my entry for Schubert read ``famous song composer'' for an embarrassingly long time), and a good proportion of the rest is little more than (what I hope is at least reasonably informed) opinion.

One of the greatest Baroque composers along with Handel . His most famous works are probably the Brandenburg Concerti , the Well-tempered clavier The art of fugue , his Mass in B-minor, and the St. Matthew Passion . Needless to say, I wholeheartedly recommend each and every one of the above works. From what I've read and heard, Bach is now considered somewhat atypical as far as Baroque composers go. His ``obsession'' with the fugue was apparently rather anachronistic; most other composers of the same era held that the fugue was an out-dated form.

Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849) Frederic Chopin was born in Poland of a Polish mother, and his country of origin clearly influenced Chopin to the extent that he wrote many Mazurkas and Polonaises based on Polish dances. The other country he is associated with is France, his father being French and Chopin moving to Paris and spending much of his creative life there. Although often contrasted with the extrovert virtuoso Liszt, the reserved Chopin nevertheless had a creatively important social life in Paris with a number of lady friends. His longest lasting relationship was with the female novelist known as George Sand who dressed as a man. This relationship was important to Chopin, with Sand perhaps acting as a mother figure, and they were together for about 10 years. Chopin was not particularly healthy and developed tuberculosis, which he endured for several years before his death at the age of 39. Chopin's music: Chopin was a skilled pianist, and a large proportion of his works are for solo piano. Many of these works are fairly short in duration, such as the Preludes, Etudes, Waltzes, Impromptus, Nocturnes and Scherzos, as well as the previously mentioned Polish dance forms of the Mazurka and Polonaise. Chopin also developed a form called the Ballade which is a more extended work, fairly free in style like a stream of consciousness, but with an internal logic. He also wrote a number of multi-movement works including of course several Piano Sonatas. He was quite capable of writing for other instruments and did so at times, his two Piano Concertos (for solo Piano and Orchestra) being obvious examples.

Her performance will be free and open to the public. Lecuona will play three pieces: Serge Prokofiev's Sonata No. 2 in D minor, op. 14; the Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor, op. 39 of Frederic Chopin; and, filling the second half of the program, Robert Schumann's Sonata No. 1 in F-sharp minor, op. 11. As a musical title, the Italian word "scherzo" has had several different connotations. From its original meaning of a joke, it was used to refer to a lightweight, witty piece. Beethoven used it in a highly individual way, for movements of rough and energetic character that appeared in his symphonies and sonatas in place of the stately minuet. Chopin transformed the scherzo yet again into independent character pieces that are more like tragic musical poems than anything witty. Prokofiev's nine piano sonatas are considered the composer's finest keyboard writing, and among the most significant piano works of the 20th century. They were composed over a span of more than 40 years 1907-53 representing most of his compositional career. The Sonata No. 2, which was developed from a one-movement sonatina and a scherzo written for a composition class, was premiered in 1914, when Prokofiev was 23. It is characteristic of his early style, with striking, angular melodies, strong rhythms and biting harmonies.

In a quiet and modest manor house on February 22, 1810 the biggest pride of the Polish nation and the treasure to the whole world- Fryderyk Chopin was born.
Zelazowa Wola formed part of the estate of a Count Skarbek. Nicolas Chopin, the composer's father, was a tutor to the Count's young son, Fryderyk, after whom he later named his own son; Chopin's mother, Justyna Krzyzanowska, ran the household of the Skarbek family.
Nicolas Chopin came to Poland from France at the age of sixteen. Through many years of residence in Poland as well as marriage to a Polish woman, he could speak very good Polish. He participated in the Kosciuszko Uprising as a Polish soldier, and he did indeed become a Pole.
Fryderyk Chopin's first piano teacher was his sister Ludwika. However, after one year the young student was far more advanced than his teacher, and their parents had to find a new teacher for Fryderyk. They turned to Wojciech Zywny, music teacher from Warsaw, who is to this day mentioned in virtually every music encyclopedia around the world thanks to this particular student of his, as the man who should be responsible for Fryderyk's early musical education.

Chopin: Polonaises No6 As my source of inspiration today, I have chosen Frederic Chopin's Nocturn in E flat major, Opus 9, No 2 , composed when he was barely out of his teens, and is perhaps my favourite. I say 'perhaps' advisedy because, as on many occasions, it seems so at the time of playing. It is a lovely piece of music. 'Nocturne' means 'night piece', or music that is quiet and pensive in mood. The long melody of this piece unfolds into a mood of dreamy contemplation. Towards the end Chopin adds some wonderfully decorative pieces which to me suggests the shimmer of moonlight; and then the piece ends as quietly and serenely as it began. This patriotic Polish composer was in fact half French and left Poland at the age of 20 never to return.. He composed most of his music in France, where he established his legendary reputation as a virtuoso performer. The second of four children of French born Nicholas Chopin and his Polish wife Justina, Frederic was born in Warsaw, Poland on the 1st March, 1810, and became a child prodigy. His Polonaise in G was published in 1817, and a year later, at the age of eight, his brilliant piano technique captivated Warsaw's society audiences.

Virtuoso!': Pianist Gach splits program between virtuosic composers Chopin and Liszt
PAM KRAGEN
Staff Writer
Although the title of pianist Peter Gach's concert Sunday at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, is "Virtuoso!," Gach says the reference is not to himself but to the universality and skills of the two composers on the program - Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt. "I hope to show, by playing them back to back, that you can get a real summary of the big Romantic 19th century style of playing, because Chopin and Liszt set the tone for the huge works, the complicated technique and the large emotional palette that the piano could explore," said Gach, who heads the keyboard program at Palomar College and serves as Palomar's artist in residence. Chopin, the 19th century Polish composer credited with advancing the piano from an orchestral instrument to a solo instrument, has been one of the great influences of Gach's life. From 1973 to 1976, Gach did post-graduate study under world-renowned Chopin expert Jan Eiker at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw.
