"The foremost pianist of his time" - Carl Czerny (1791-1857) Pianist, teacher, composer, conductor music publisher, piano manufacturer. Publisher of the major works of Beethoven. (See Biography at right). Dramatic writing strongly influenced Beethoven. Teacher of John Field (1782-1837) and J.B. Cramer ((1771-1858). The composer of the definitive Classical piano sonata, Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) was the first to create keyboard works expressly for the capabilities of the pianoforte. Acclaimed as the father of the pianoforte and modern piano technique, this complex and influential musician was also the first virtuoso on the instrument. Clementi was a celebrated composer and teacher, orchestral conductor, symphonic composer, music publisher, and piano manufacturer. Clementi's influence extended well into the 19th century, with composers using his sonatas as models for their keyboard compositions. Beethoven, in particular, had the highest regard for Clementi and not only admired his piano sonatas but placed them above those of Mozart in importance.

The three sonatas of Opus 10 were edited from the 'revised' autographs, copies of which were obtained from The British Library (London). To the knowledge of the editor, these revised versions were never published. The original versions of the Opus 10 piano sonatas were composed in 1783. The revisions were made after 1800, according to Tyson's "Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Muzio Clementi." Also included in Volume I are three sonatas, previously unavailable for purchase in modern notation. These sonatas were edited from authentic 19th-century editions. The volume measures 9 x 12.25 and is 'wiro' bound for the pianist's convenience. The sonatas of Volume I will soon be recorded on the Calcante Records label. The projected Volume II in this series will contain the earliest surviving composition of Clementi, written in 1775. This sonata, exhibiting incredible stylistic maturity, was edited from the unpublished autograph of the 13-year-old Clementi. Also included will be various sonatas edited from autograph or 19th-century editions.

Muzio Clementi was born in Roma, in 1752. His father was a silversmith, and became aware of his son's musical talent at a young age.
When he was seven, Clementi was sent to musical instruction. He was so good a pupil that two years later he gained a position as an organist. A rich Englishman was impressed by Clementi's gift, and decided to adopt him and bring him to England. In England, Clementi received an excellent education in music and academics.
In 1770, Clementi made his first performance on the piano. His audience was greatly taken with his playing, and this was the beginning of a incredible successful career as a concert pianist. He was raised to the highest level of the pianists of the day in short order. Clementi started a European tour in 1781, when he travelled to France, Deutschland, and Österreich. In Vindabona, Clementi was asked by the Emperor Joseph II to enter a musical duel with Mozart Clementi performed a piece of his own composition, a piano sonata in B-flat major, Mozart performed a dazzling series of variations.

Moscow Pays Tribute to an Irish Pianist By Raymond Stults
For MT Ranking among the most important of Ireland's cultural contributions to Russia is certainly John Field, the Irish-born pianist who arrived in St. Petersburg in 1802 at the age of 20 and spent most of his remaining 35 years playing, composing and teaching in Russia. Though treated today as little more than a footnote to Russian musical history, Field for his pupils and those who followed in their footsteps perhaps rightly deserves to be regarded as the father of Russian piano playing. On Saturday evening at the Moscow Conservatory, local music lovers will have a rare chance to hear Field's music, with a performance of the second of his seven piano concertos by the noted Irish Field interpreter, pianist MiceÇl O'Rourke, accompanied by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its music director, Vladimir Ziva. The concert takes place under the patronage of the Irish Embassy and marks the 30th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and what has become the Russian Federation. Born in Dublin, Field moved with his family at the age of 11 to London, where he became a star pupil of Italian composer, pianist and piano manufacturer Muzio Clementi. It was with Clementi that he came to St. Petersburg, at the end of a long European tour on which Field demonstrated the virtues of Clementi's instruments.

Sammy Cahn (Samuel Cohen) lived from 1913 until 1993. If you care about anything at all, there’s a song written by Sammy Cahn for you to relate to. Sammy Cahn, the Tin Pan Alley legend, was born Samuel Cohen in New York City.
As a youngster, little Sammy wanted to grow up to be a famous vaudeville fiddler. How lucky we are that he stopped thinking about this in his teenage years. That’s when he met pianist, Saul Chaplin. Sammy wrote the words and Saul wrote the music to their first hit, Rhythm is Our Business for bandleader, Jimmie Lunceford.
