Links October 2002 Reviews Friday 25 October, Waterfront Hall, 19.45 Concert details Monday 28 October, Irish News Festival launch lights up city despite the rain The 40th Belfast Festival at Queen's threw itself at the city on Friday night in a blaze of colour and a barrage of sound. Unfortunately the launch also involved in almost nautical proportions a great deal of torrential rainwater. However, the opening concert at the Waterfront Hall was preceded by an impressive torchlit procession from the City Hall, culminating in an amazing aerial performance from French musicians Transe Express. The foyer of the hall pulsated with primeval drumming and I can't remember a festival launch that managed to attract more children and young people. The concert itself, given by the Ulster Orchestra with principal conductor Thierry Fischer featured music from three capital cities reinforcing the theme, Sounding the City. Fischer and the orchestra enjoyed themselves immensely in Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from W est Side Story.

The festival of chamber music will, once again, take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend (Friday 4 - Monday 7 May inclusive) in the intimate setting of St Columba’s Parish Church, Drumcliffe, Co. Sligo. The ESB Vogler Spring Festival 2001 again revolves around the Vogler Quartet both as artistic directors and as key performers. They will be joined by eight acclaimed Irish and international guest artists, many of whom are collaborating for the first time. AUGUST 2001 / VOL. 2 ISSUE 3 Strings attached Callino quartet makes the classical scene By Sam Healy Irish American Post Dublin Bureau The members of the Callino String Quartet claim to be exhausted after a grueling mini-tour, but to me they seem fresh as daisies. Indeed, their youth, cheer and (it would be unprofessional of me to omit this germane detail) undeniable beauty seem wholly at odds with the traditional image of the chamber ensemble, hoary and somber. "It's unfortunate that this preconception about the classical world being stuffy and dreary still exists," lamented Sarah Black, Callino's cellist. The quartet recently played in secondary schools around Ireland, and many pupils, she said, "were amazed at how young we were, and at the fact that classical musicians could actually have a sense of humor." The origins of the quartet are surprisingly haphazard. The four women (Ioana Petcu-Colan, Sarah Sexton, Samantha Miller and Black) were "thrown together" at the West Cork International Chamber Music Festival in June 1999. For that venue, the festival organizers assigned young participants to ensembles more or less at random. They then rehearsed together for a week and performed in public. Generally, these temporary groups dissolve after they have served their purpose. When Callino performed, however, it was clear both to the audience and the musicians themselves that something special had been created, something that merited continuance.

Feedback Let us know what you think Home Talk of the Town By AIDAN CORR Talented Donagh Collins jumps aboard the fast-moving Irish Chamber Orchestra bandwagon DONAGH Collins has all the qualities that we have come to expect from those involved with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has a vibrant and youthful personality, buzzes at the pace of a contata and is obviously exceptionally talented. Donagh is also quite humble about his qualities. A gifted cellist and pianist who won Irish dancing championships throughout the country, he admits that he has "no interest whatsoever in becoming a full-time performing artiste" and is looking forward to his new challenge as operations manager with the ICO with a noticeable degree of enthusiasm. Currently living in Killaloe, Donagh is with the orchestra at the University of Limerick since November. His plans for the group are exciting and he intends to utitilise his vast experience gained through extensive travel to expand the profile of the ICO to hitherto unexplored regions during the coming season: "The ICO is now regarded as an orchestra with international appeal. We now have to bring the orchestra to a high level, to take a step up. We are not yet as well known as we would like in the UK, for instance, and plans are there to tour the Far East and more of Europe during the coming seasons. Our priority, however, is Ireland. International tours are a bonus."

During 1997 the Trio made the world premiere recording of the Bliss Piano Quartet for the Bliss Foundation. They have previously recorded a CD of contemporary chamber works by the Catalan composer Salvador Brotons on the Picap label of Barcelona. Formed in 1991 the Leopold String Trio has already won several awards. These include the Maisie Lewis Young Artists' Fund which led to a crtically acclaimed Purcell Room debut (1993), a Tunnell Trust award (1995), the RTZ Ensemble Prize at the 1995 Royal Overseas League Music Competiion and in 1995 were joiny winners of the Young Musicians Platform administered by South East Arts Music Schemes. In June 1995 the Trio was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust. The Trio studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has been coached by members of the Amadeus Quartet and by the Alban Berg Quartet at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh. That's the message of the "Building Cultural Bridges" program at Pearl Hall Elementary School. Musicians from various cultural backgrounds visited the school recently to share stories about their heritage and careers in music. One of them was Carlos Miguel Prieto, associate conductor with the Houston Symphony, who spoke to fifth graders at Pearl Hall last week. Prieto's past experience includes conducting all of the main orchestras in Mexico, leading more than 70 concerts a year. He has served as guest conductor with the San Antonio Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic, the Dallas Symphony and the Karelia Philharmonic in Russia. "Wherever you go, you'll always find that there is a bond through music," Prieto told the students. "Music is just like a universal language." Prieto also stressed the value of earning a quality education. He received a bachelor's degree from Princeton and a masters from Harvard University. He was concertmaster of the orchestra at Harvard. In 1998, he received the Mozart Medal of Honor from the Mexican and Austrian governments.

ARTS REVIEW PREVIEW: WATERFORD MUSIC I t is getting dark at eight o'clock these evenings and it seems to suit the mood as the programme for Waterford Music comes to hand. I still have that image in my head of the summer ending and the baskets of berries carried indoors to make jam. Nights at Waterford Music carry that memory of summer, a golden autumn of friends gathering around a piano, and a refuge of winter at a roaring fire that gives way to seasonal gifts; gifts of music and companionship and the eternal promise of spring. A fine programme that opens on 4th October and its eight concerts/recitals run until 12th April 2002. John O'Connor will be a highlight in January. The National Chamber Choir, under the direction of Colin Mawby, will begin the season on 4th October, followed by the exciting young Irish pianist Finghin Collins, on 11th October. His programme will include a Beethoven sonata. On 15th Nov. Michael Collins, on clarinet, will join with the Oslo String Quartet. The Moscow Piano Trio will provide the 6th December entertainment on their fifth visit to Waterford. Israeli violinist Eyav Kless will join John O'Connor for a much anticipated evening of quality music on 24th January. On Valentine's Day the emerging talent of Therese Fahy, on piano, will delight lovers young and old. A nice touch on the 7th March will be a Debut Recital from Waterford Institute of Technology B.A. students.
