St. Mogue's bridge 110-year gap to claim football crown
(Our picture shows Minister Hugh Byrne and his son Jim) It is not, cracked Minister of State, Hugh Byrne, the end of the road for Fethard, but the beginning of the road. The Minister was one of several speakers, including Fr. Joe. McGrath and John Hanton, who lavished praise on the new champions, praise which was savoured by the attendance as the men who will become folk-heroes were hero-worshipped. There was consternation when the team captain, Georgie Foley, announced that training was to recommence on Tuesday night - in Hotel Naomh Seosamh, he was quick to add to lusty cheers. But it will be back to serious business on Friday night in preparation for Sunday week's Leinster Club championship meeting with Athlone in Athlone.

Junior Cork Youth Orchestra
Conductor: Terry McCarthy
Leader: Sophie McConnell

The Junior Cork Youth Orchestra was founded in 1991, essentially as a training orchestra, preparing the members for audition for the Cork Youth Orchestra. It began with strings only, gradually adding woodwind and percussion, and most recently, brass. The ages of the members range from 11-13 yrs. All members are allowed two years in the Junior Orchestra before they audition for the Senior Orchestra. A typical year for the Orchestra involves sight reading up to five pieces per week of different standards and from February onwards, preparing for an annual concert in May. The aim of the Orchestra is to provide the members with as much experience as possible to enable them to cope with any new music presented to them. The Orchestra rehearses every Saturday evening. This is the first time the Orchestra has performed in a major venue.

Two AIMS awards for De La Salle
A t the Association of Irish Musical Societies Awards, in Tralee, last Saturday, 16th June, the De La Salle Musical Society won two national awards. Tobie Hickey won the Best Comedian Award and Martina Flynn won the Best Comedienne Award for their wonderful portrayals in "Guys and Dolls".
This was a colourful production, directed by Tony Finnegan, last year, in the style of Dick Tracy, the Warren Beatty movie. Martina Flynn was a stylish Adelaide with a deadpan humour that erupted into the sniffles to the obvious delight of the audience. This was Martina's fourth AIMS award. She said she "was very pleased and it was a great honour". Tobie Hickey was an hilarious Nicely Nicely Johnson whose comic antics dominated so much of the show as did his rendition of the big number "Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat". Tobie was elated and said, "It's just the business, such a buzz to be selected out of 87 shows in the 32 counties".
The show's producer, Tony Finnegan, made quite an impact with nominations in 26 categories and 10 awards. This is a phenomenal record. The Carrick production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" won two awards: The Best Lighting Christy Butler Trophy and the AIMS Unsung Hero Award to Willie Allen. Willie Allen does lots of the behind the scenes work that is so vital to societies and the public never realise happens.
The lighting award was originally given to AIMS to honour the memory of Christy Butler, as was the Unsung Hero Award, to honour the memory of another Carrick person, Mary Kelly. It's a wonder of show business that both these awards have returned to Carrick in 2001.

http://www.theirishring.com/history.htm
Jim Molloy Promotions was set up in order to provide a platform for young Irish singers who would not normally have an opportunity to reach a wider public. Having a great interest in the Arts and, especially, in the promotion of young talent, Jim Molloy presented his first concert at the prestigious National Concert Hall, Dublin in 1998 / 1999 with the first of The La Scala to the Met Series of Concerts. These concerts enabled us to bring young and non-established singers to the concert platform in supporting roles to well known and more established stars such as acclaimed Irish soprano, Niamh Murray on a number of occasions, Ronan Tynan (The Irish Tenors fame), English International Tenor, Arthur Davies, American International Tenor, Richard Roberts, Irish Tenor Declan Kelly and, of course, the highly acclaimed Irish Soprano, Kathryn Smith and international Tenor Anthony Kearns on a number of occasions. Apart from promoting young singers, Jim Molloy Promotions has a keen interest in young instrumentalists. One who has taken part in the La Scala to The Met concerts is Finghin Collins who is now a highly successful and acclaimed international pianist. Another great young Irish talent is the Cellist, Gerald Peregrine who took part in the La Scala to the Met 3 in November 1999 and is now studying in America where his aunt Moya O'Grady is so well known.

WEST CORK CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL 2002 Archive (June 29th - July 7th)
West Cork Music Homepage Hear the cream of international performers at this nine-day extravaganza of musical magic. Around forty concerts performed by over sixty musicians will be staged from Saturday 29th June to Sunday 7th July in the idyllic setting of Bantry House. The range of music is astounding, from atmospheric baroque to cutting-edge contemporary music. You can hear renowned musicians the Artis Quartet Vienna playing Mozart and Strauss, the exotic Shanghai Quartet playing Bright Sheng and Brahms, and the stylish Paris-Bastille Wind Ensemble with a selection of works from the 20th century. Soloists include Pavel Nersessian, winner of the Dublin Piano Competition, who will accompany Andrei Gridchuk in Shostakovich’s heartrending Viola Sonata; Colin Carr, cellist, who will play Bach and Britten; and Charlotte Riedijk, soprano from Holland, to name but a few. The Osiris Trio, who unfortunately had to cancel due to ill health, will now be replaced by the Altenberg Trio, musicians in residence at the Vienna Conservatory. The city of Vienna has a rich musical and artistic history, and this will be celebrated at the Festival by performances of works by Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, Berg, Schönberg and Zemlinsky. Please note that the programme may be subject to change.
