Percy Aldridge Grainger P ercy Grainger the eccentric but brilliant composer and pianist from Melbourne, Australia lived on the edge. Not content to try and change the course of music, Grainger experimented with clothing design, beadwork, and language reform and music technology; even in the bedroom. Grainger pushed himself to the limit. His youth (1882-1895) Frankfurt (1895-1901) Britain (1901-1914) America (1914-1925) ... Health His youth (1882-1895) P ercy Aldridge Grainger was born on July 8, 1882 as George Percy Grainger came from the raw and vigorous frontier world of nineteenth-century Brighton, Melbourne, Australia. He was the only child of John Harry Grainger , an architect from London, and Rose Annie Aldridge , the eighth child of a hotelkeeper's family in Adelaide, South Australia. H London for his health and when he did he left his family behind. The bond between the mother and the son grew deeper, even spiritual, and they thought of themselves as "the two of us against the world". O wing to her self-motivation and thirst for knowledge

Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) Zijn Jeugdjaren (1882 - 1895) Frankfurt (1895-1901) Engeland (1901-1914) Amerika (1914-1925) ... Hun huwelijk sneuvelde definitief toen

http://www.elon.edu/archives/musicians.html
Visiting Musicians Throughout Elon College history there have been many different music programs performed at our own Whitley Auditorium. They range from the performances of our own orchestra and band, to visiting soloist, to modern country, rock and folk bands. To no surprise the music has changed throughout the decades. In the 30's more musicians came to perform at Elon. In the early 30's our first performance of Handels " Messiah " was given. This is a tradition that has lasted to the present day at Elon. Earle Spicer in 1938, accompanied by Mude Freeman performed at Elon. Spicer, a baritone, who began singing in his boyhood has appeared before crowned heads and royalties of Europe and has been a soloist with many of the worlds leading orchestras. Francis Hall and Rudolph Gruen also gave a piano duet. The 60's brought more and more artists here to Elon. George Shearing and Quintet performed at Elon's Mid-Winter dance, as well as Ralph Marterie and his Orchestra. Natalie Bondana, a lyric soprano and famous opera singer also performed. Thomas Richner, a New York musician, gave a Piano and Organ recital. Virgil Fox also gave a concert in 1962 at the May Day concert. Alivio Diaz, a classical guitarist performed. Eddie Allen and his Orchestra in 1963 which featured Sheryl as their vocalist, played the Homecoming Dance. The 70's brought more artists. Goose Creek Symphony, Herbie Mann, Jimmy Buffet and his band Coral Reefers Band, The Outlaws, Elvin Bishop, Linda Ronstandt, Earl Scruggs Reven, and Mountain all gave wonderful performances that were highly accepted by their audiences. In 1974 the beginnings of the college radio station were forming. WELN 91.1 was to broadcast rock, country, educational and political messages to Elon listeners. WELN 91.1 didn't actually start until 1977 due to complications and funding.

Civic Morning Musicals - the First Hundred Years, by Earl George Acknowledgements The earliest years of the organization that eventually became Civic Morning Musicals proved to be the easiest to document. The ladies of The Morning Musicals presented their recitals for each other without printed programs, but every few years, through 1908, they published complete printed compilations of those programs, as well as resumes of all their other activities. Those program booklets, along with an early scrapbook and a wealth of other information found at the Onondaga Historical Association was invaluable, as was the knowledgeable and sympathetic assistance of the Historical Association's Edward Lyon and Judy Haven. Information about later activities was less easy to verify. A mass of printed, typed, or handwritten documents found in the CMM office at the Civic Center was useful, but often both incomplete and contradictory. To date, no complete collection of printed concert programs or of the minutes of the organization's meetings has been found.

The Thomaston Opera House has been selected by the Adams Foundation of Santa Barbara, CA as one of five cities to participate in a pilot series of piano recitals by acclaimed pianists in the spring of 2002. The series is designed to reestablish piano recitals in communities throughout America. The recitals at the Thomaston Opera House will feature duo-pianists Richard and John Contiguglia on Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m.; and pianist Robert Blocker on Saturday, May 4 at 8 p.m. The idea for Adams Piano Recitals was born a year ago after Stephen Adams, philanthropist and piano lover, heard the Contiguglia brothers perform at Yale and in Santa Barbara. The foundation's intent is to make possible live piano recitals at affordable prices by nationally and internationally acclaimed American artists performing on the finest available Steinway pianos in small, acoustically superior halls.

Not all the seats were taken. The series presents an admirable cross-section of music in our region, and tickets remain available. The next concert, on November 10, is in our current calendar, and the rest of the season is listed in our series tab. Please note that the next program is at 3:00 p.m. and the rest are at 7:00 p.m.; we mention this because at least one other paper had the wrong starting time for the October 27 program. Residents of the capital tend to make fun of Caryites but there is culture out there, and not only Summerfest.... There's a fine music school, a good music program at Cary Academy (where there is a tolerable auditorium, too wide for its depth but manageable), and of course a first-rate chorus (the Concert Singers of Cary, with its several choirs), and an active cultural program put on by the Town that includes the noteworthy Play with the Pros programs of the NC Symphony. In addition, there is talk of a performing arts venue for Cary, about which we will share some news at the appropriate time.
